Shes 6 in year one and normally gets reading and maybe some comprehension questions. Last night she had

  1. One 45 page reading book
  2. 12 comprehension questions re book
  3. three sheets of maths questions each with 20 questions (so 60 maths questions)

I only asked her to do one sheet of the maths and put a note in for her teacher saying I think it was a lot of homework for a week night, DD was very tierd and therefore shes not done it. DD is now panicing she'll get into trouble. AIBU to want to go and see her teacher if she does?

No yanbu. I would have done exactly the same as you.

YANBU. Homework is my biggest issue with DDs schools. she has been at three and each one varied in their requirements. I have often written a note telling the teacher that the amount is unacceptable.
She is 10 FFS, weekends should be about relaxing at that age.
A couple of weeks ago, she had two pages to do. They took five hours and she hadn't finished when I made her stop.

My DD school drives me mad sometimes! I understand that as parents we have some responsibility with regard to their education but its sooo much!

Do they think we have hours after school to dedicate time for it?
There's reading, maths, spelling, creative work. ALL IN ONE NIGHT!

lynlynnicebutdim · 24/11/2011 08:53

are you sure it was to be done overnight and not over the week. DSD often gets homework like that but it is to be handed in the following week so slightly more acceptable. Still a lot though.

purplepidjin · 24/11/2011 08:54

That sounds like a week's worth to me, when was it set and when is it due in?

soandsosmummy · 24/11/2011 09:06

It was just in the book bag along with all her other homework. the rule is that the book bag is returned the next day. Its totally out of step of the amount of homework shes ever had otherwise. I'm hoping her otherwise lovely teacher made a mistake. I will not be at all happy if dd gets into trouble (usually in the form of losing golden time I think)

If it was too much for one night, I would have probably tried to do 1/2 -3/4 of it that evening and the rest the following morning. It does sound a huge amount though so I don't see how the teacher can be cross.

redskyatnight · 24/11/2011 09:44

I agree with others that it sounds like it was intended to be done over the week. (though even so that's way more than my Y1 DD has in a week)

YANBU and join the club DD in Yr R had homework last night, where she had to log in to the school website, read 3 different versions of a well known childrens book and then comment on it. She had swimming last night and was so tired after that so we didn't do it. I put a note in the book bag saying when we had time we would get around to it but DD is very tired right now and life in our house is very hectic with DHs job and other DCs school commitments so it could be Sunday before we get to it.

SardineQueen · 24/11/2011 12:20

That is way too much. Grab the teacher and see what they say. If it was one night the express surprise and take it from there.

Eglu · 24/11/2011 12:28

I would say a whole book of that length is too much for one night. Never mind the maths.

DuchessofMalfi · 24/11/2011 12:33

At DD's school (Yr1) she's given homework on Monday, and spellings on Tuesday and they don't need to be back in until Friday. The homework should take about 10-15 mins, and varies between numeracy and literacy. There are 4-5 words to learn for a spelling test on Friday. She also has some reading practice to do, and she can do as much or as little as she wants.

The school understands that children aged 5/6 in yr 1 get tired after a day at school so they don't expect them to do much at home. They also realise that children have after school activities like swimming lessons etc. She's exhausted after a whole day and is often in bed fast asleep by 7pm so that doesn't leave a lot of time to get homework done, after school club, dinner and bath.

Apologetic note from teacher in dd's book bag tonight. It seems that DD was only meant to have the reading and comprehension but the girls had been told they could take a sheet of maths questions for practice if they wanted but DD had taken all three sets!

Phew
