Should I have to pay for my dishwasher to NOT be fixed?

I bought a new dishwasher recently. We had it put in as part of a kitchen refit- the plumber plumbed it in, the electrician did the wiring and and kitchen fitter put the front on (not sure who put it in finally).

A couple of weeks ago it developed an electrical fault so I rang the company I bought it from and they said they would send an engineer round. He came round and looked at it, fiddled a bit and then said it was a problem with the plug socket it was plugged into.

Fine. Then he told me as the fault was not a problem with the actual dishwasher I now have to pay £70 for the visit!!

I wouldnt have minded if I had been told this before the visit but nobody had mentioned this fee until he was there and had already diagnosed the fault- should I have to pay??? Surely they should have mentioned this before.

YOu didn't expect him to come and diagnose the problem for free did you?

is it not under guarantee? Or should you have called the electrician instead?

I did expect it to be free- it was a brand new dishwasher and as far as I knew it had developed a fault so I called the company I had bought it from. They said they would send a engineer to come and see it- never once mentioned anything about paying for it!!

If there had been something wrong with the dishwasher then any repair/replacement costs are down to the supplier.

It wasn't the dishwasher though, it was the socket, so it's presumably the fault of the electrician or the kitchen installers? The engineer does need paying, but you could try claiming the cost back from whoever is responsible for the socket?

Did he just diagnose the fault or did he fix it as well?

Agree with Jareth - if the spark has caused the issue due to faulty wiring at the socket, he/she should reimburse you for the call out fee. Have had similar issues in the past and would have no difficulty in passing on the bill.

yabu, the engineer probably gets paid per job, why should he be out of pocket? They should of told you though that there would be a charge if the fault wasn't with the appliance. It maybe in the smallprint of the guarantee.
