I went round to my parents house last night and my sister got really drunk in her room and was throwing up. When she had finished being sick she came into the kitchen and wanted to open a bottle of vodka, my brother tried to stop her but she became very aggressive and told him she'd put him over her knee if he didn't give it her back. My parents made him give it to her because its hers and she went back into her room presumabley to get hammered again. She regulary gets drunk alone (2-3 times a week) since she broke up with her boyfriend and moved back in with my parents. My parents say that she is 25 and she buys it so there is nothing they can do (I think they are in denial), and my brother seems worried but he's only 16.
She is destroying her health and her life, AIBU to be very worried and to want to step in and try to help her to stop drinking. DP says its pointless if she doesn't want to help herself.

YADNBU she sounds like she has some serious mental health issues and its only natural to want to help family in need.

piloi · 22/11/2011 12:26

YADNBU and I agree with you but unfortunately your DP is right alcoholics have to have the will to change.

fuzzynavel · 22/11/2011 12:29

Can you take her to lunch or something on your own and have a "chat" with her.

Not going to shout alcoholic about this but it seems she's using drink to drown her sorrows at the moment (as she's just split with boyfriend) in very large quantities.

janewa · 22/11/2011 12:37

"told him she'd put him over her knee if he didn't give it her back"

YADNBU she threatened to sexually assault her brother if she didn't get her booze, she sounds like an alcoholic. Could you not meet her one to one and point her in the direction of AA.

MrSpoc · 22/11/2011 12:41

I dont agree she is an alky just yet. When did she brake up with him and how long has she been back at your mums?

If its a matter of weeks i wouldnt worry too much as she is trying to deal with a break up. If its months, years then she defo has a problem.

And janewa, sexual assault? really. Yes its an assualt but sexual?

aerol · 22/11/2011 12:42

YANBU she seems to be using alcohol as her solace after breaking up with her boyfriend and having to move back in with her parents. Its very easy to get stuck in a rut and she needs help to get out of it as it could destroy her. That I wouldn't exactly say she threatened to sexually assault her brother janewa.

hertal · 22/11/2011 12:44

They broke up in March as he was cheating on her and had been for 2 years and the other woman is pregnant.

That is not "sexual" assault for heaven sakes!

Chundle · 22/11/2011 12:47

Sorry to say this but same situation happened to friend of mine. Her brother got dumped he turned to drinking seriously and was found dead in his flat few weeks later. Be very very careful and get her help, these things spiral very quickly

shoobydoowop · 22/11/2011 12:49

strange thing for her to have said to your brother though. Very odd indeed

WineAndPizza · 22/11/2011 12:52

Not sexual assault.

But very worrying behaviour from your sister, I would talk to her about it. She is obviously going through a really difficult time but this is not how to deal with it. Has she always drunk heavily on nights out etc or was she ok generally with alcohol before?

MrSpoc · 22/11/2011 12:53

i thought she waqs going to say he was young ubt agreed weird thing to say.

Why dont you try and take her mind off things, go out with her, socialise, get her to see life goes on.

hertal · 22/11/2011 12:53

Shw was a heavyish drinker before but she has definately significantly increased since the break up

squeakytoy · 22/11/2011 12:54

Its just a term of phrase.. if my MIL says to my husband "you arent too old to put over my knee you know!" when he is winding her up, it means to give him a smacked arse... its not sexual in any way at all! (he is 50 by the way! :) and twice her size, so it would be very amusing to see her try it!)

On a serious note, OP, your sister is definately doing herself a lot of harm, and needs help. If you can get her when she is not drunk, talk to her and try to persuade her to go to see her GP as soon as possible.

StepAwayFromTheEcclesCakes · 22/11/2011 12:57

keep an eye on it try and talk to her when she is sober to let her know you are worried, talk to the parents who are not helping here and suggest she see her GP for help with the drinking and more importantly with the depression she seems to be in. Its a rocky road to ruin if no one steps in.

Thingumy · 22/11/2011 12:57

You can't make her stop drinking.

You can suggest that she seeks help.

'Al-anon' maybe of help for you as family members.

Thingumy · 22/11/2011 12:58

*and

knockkneedandknackered · 22/11/2011 13:00

i dont't think she meant anything by it. smacking her brother other her knee too drunk to know what she was saying more likely it is hard for to her to be living with someone for2 years then he gets the other girl pregnant. but she needs awake up call the booze is clouding her judgement she needs close people around to bring her life back on track he couldent have been the boyfriend she thought he was better of with out him.

bned · 22/11/2011 17:22

YANBU it sounds like very worrying behaviour
