to expect a 9mo to nap?

So frustrating!! Dd won't sleep in the day - on a good day I get 2x20 min naps from her. Is this my punishment for having nighttime sleep sorted? (630-630 usually). And how do I entertain her aaaaall bloody day? Have tried snuggles in bed when she's tired, and the buggy, as well as the cot. Just ranting as an knackered and fed up, any tips to encourage daytime sleep welcome.

If she's sleeping 12hours she doesn't need a nap surely? Confused

6.30pm is a very early bedtime imo...you're lucky it works for her.

Why are you knackered and fed up? Do you have other children who wear you out or are you not eating properly?

SarahBumBarer · 22/11/2011 12:10

Eh - worra? You did see that the baby is 9 months old?

hardboiledpossum · 22/11/2011 12:10

Maybe if she's having a full 12hours at night she not that tired in the day? Does she seem grumpy. 2 naps is normal but I would expect them to be a bit longer.

blackoutthesun · 22/11/2011 12:11

same here dd will have one 40min nap

changed as soon as we got the night time sleep sorted, but i don't mind. would rather her be up all day and sleeing at night

WorraLiberty · 22/11/2011 12:12

Yes Sarah I did.

I'm not saying the OP shouldn't be knackered, I'm just asking why she is knackered with a baby who sleeps from 6.30pm to 6.30am.

SarahBumBarer · 22/11/2011 12:13

OK my DS is 15 months. He sleeps for 12 hours at night - 7.30 to 7.30 and has one nap just after lunch for 1-1.5hours. This seems absolutely standard among my ante-natal group and in his toddler group at nursery.

He dropped his second nap at around 10 months (prior to that he was having two 1 hour naps per day). What times of day is your DD napping Cooking?

bigkidsdidit · 22/11/2011 12:15

My 10mo sleeps 7-7 at night, 9-10.30 ish and 1-2ish

I thought 14 hours roughly out of 24 wsa standard for 9-12 mo olds. Bad luck OP :(

so YANBU!

SarahBumBarer · 22/11/2011 12:17

OK - Well I am sure she will answer but perhaps she is still catching up after night feeding for many months. Perhaps like me once 6.30 rolls around it is time to tidy up, do the housework and make dinner.

If OP is being a full time mum from 6.30 am until 6.30 pm that is a long working day - enough to tire anyone IMO and it is hard trying to entertain a 9 months old who generally can't do much for themselves. I don't think it is unreasonable that such a day would make her knackered or that she could expect a longer day time nap.

bigkidsdidit · 22/11/2011 12:18

absolutely Sarah

It's hard work entertaining for 12 hours especially if they are tired and grouchy

WorraLiberty · 22/11/2011 12:20

Sarah keep your hair on Grin

I didn't say she was being unreasonable. I asked why she's knackered and fed up.

And yes you're right, I'm sure the OP will answer that.

deliciousdevilwoman · 22/11/2011 12:21

UANBU! My DD-11 months, has slept 12 hours from about 3 months old-7-7 mostly. She has X2 "power naps" of 45-60 minutes per day. I would be most put out if she didn't nap at all during the day. As much as I love playing/being with her, the naps are a "window" to get things done/chill without her nipping at my heels!

SarahBumBarer · 22/11/2011 12:22

No, no it's on worra Sorry! - My last post should have been addressed to the OP instead of saying "she" and I would have sounded less grumpy and also more polite to you cooking Grin

hardboiledpossum · 22/11/2011 12:24

I forgot to say, DS is also 9 months and only has two short naps a day. I wish he slept 12 hours at night though, I get about 10 hours of broken sleep through the night. Maybe you're spending too much time entertaining him? If you're exhausted lie on the sofa for an hour whilst he amuses himself with some toys.

NinkyNonker · 22/11/2011 12:27

Dd only started napping properly at around 14 months. Up until then she would have the odd half hour on our bed, 45 mins at best or she would sleep in sling or car etc.

Now she will have 2 hrs on the trot once a day, most of the time. She still doesn't sleep 12 bra a night though, so I am not that sympathetic on the knackered after a full night's sleep part!

Normal though I think. Some babies aren't nappers.

cookingfat · 22/11/2011 12:40

Am knackered as last night she was up from 3am for an hour (teething), also catching up from 3 feeds a night for the last 8 months as sarah pointed out. I also work freelance, so work 7pm til 10pm each night - this is a short-term thing as she'll be going to nursery part-time in Feb. Naptime used to be for sorting the house out, cooking dinner, life admin, mn and telly. I know it's normal-ish, and that I'm lucky she sleeps at night, but just wanted a self-indulgent rant here.

Thanks for the support, ladies. Guess what? She fell asleep as soon as I posted Grin - is awake now (a half hour nap then).

my twins stopped napping at 10 1/2 months :( they will very occasionally nap if they are poorley - but NEVER both together.

SarahBumBarer · 22/11/2011 13:38

sympathies - I probably would resist reading the "fed up with daily life with a toddler" thread for now Grin
