Oh I do this all the time. I used to be obsessive about defrosting chicken but recently I bung it in the microwave on defrost for about 10 minutes or until you can no longer injure a small child with it and then put it straight in the oven, no hanging round in between.

lubeybooby · 22/11/2011 10:04

You can cook it from frozen if it doesn't have giblets inside, just do it for AGES at a medium heat covered in foil and then when you've done the 'are the jiuces clear' test, baste it and cook a bit longer to brown it minus the foil.

GwendolineMaryLacey · 22/11/2011 10:04

Is it chicken pieces or a whole chicken?

lubeybooby · 22/11/2011 10:04

'juices' even Blush

If you've got a fan oven it would be better to turn on the fan and the oven at v low to defrost it.

defrosting chicken in the microwave is fine if you cook with it straight away, if any of it gets warm and then its left to cool then it shouldn't be used.

shoobydoowop · 22/11/2011 10:18

Sorry should have said its chicken breast fillets

Fan oven on with just the fan, no heat works and is safe. Not sure about low heat although its never done us any harm.

Bowl of cold water also works, fine if they are already seal wrapped.

GingerWrath · 22/11/2011 10:31

I'd chuck them in a sink full of tepid water, in a ziploc bag.

JarethTheGoblinKing · 22/11/2011 10:35

When I say low heat I mean 20C or so (our fan only works when you click the heat on to low)

oven doesn't get higher than room temp though.

ChaosTrulyReigns · 22/11/2011 10:38

I'm with ginger.

Water all the way. It's surprisingly fast. And then when you can get a knife through, chunk it up to achieve a lager surface area.

shoobydoowop · 22/11/2011 10:39

probably should also have mentioned that I am in work until 5pm...I imagine a bowl of water takes ages to defrost them?

Safest way to defrost chicken is to run cold water over it until it is defrosted. Takes about 20 minutes. Microwave is okay though as long as you cook it immediately, and the chicken was frozen when very fresh, and is in a freezer that is kept below -18.

Naoko · 22/11/2011 12:34

I defrost chicken breast in the microwave all the time. Never made anyone sick yet.

Tee2072 · 22/11/2011 12:47

I have never remembered to take something out of the freezer on time for about 32 years. Chuck it in the micro. It's really the only reason I have one.

StaceymAloneForver · 22/11/2011 13:04

i always micro it when i forget, we're all still alive and kicking (and no food poisoning either Wink

cornflakegirl · 22/11/2011 14:01

Microwave. But on a lowish power, otherwise the edges start to cook and go rubbery.

ALittleHouselessMatch · 22/11/2011 14:11

I don't have a micro and often use the bowl of cool water trick. Even faster if you put it in a metal bowl. As long as you defrost the chicken so it's pretty much all at the same temperature (eg no solid bit on one side with completely defrosted bits on the other), cook it immediately, and make sure that it is all cooked through, piping hot with no cold spots, then there should be no problem.

harrietlichman · 22/11/2011 15:57

I'm not sure - I always used to do it (defrost in microwave) but then last year we all got camplylobacter which I suspect was down to that - was horrible (and shaming - we got a letter from the environmental health with instructions on taking handling raw meat etc)

So I wouldn't.

iscream · 23/11/2011 09:11

We do last minute defrosting defrost in a sink of cold water.
Some chicken I will just cook from frozen.

Put in covered baking pan with a bit of water, chopped onions, garlic and lot's of herbs, at 400 for about 40 minutes, then separate the frozen pieces if they were stuck to each other, and let cook at 325 until done.
r same as above, but pour bottle of bbq sauce, or canned tomatoes and seasonings over top instead of onions and herbs.
