A box of lego. He is 4
He will get lots from my family, he hasn't looked at half the stuff he got for his birthday, and he has more stuff than I can store. All his toys get rotated, so he forgets about them, then gets excited again when they come back out.
Shall i get rid of some of his old stuff? But he will still play with it all.

He would be happy with a few books, I'm sure.

YANBU :) We're starting the toy rotation early with DS. He's only 4 months but has a few from each age group (newborn, 0-6, 6-12)

We've said to everyone that he has enough toys, and we've picked a few choice things up for him. But everyone else is to get him clothes!

YANBU
I used to go way over the top at Christmas (compensating for my own utterly crap childhood christmas's). We now choose one large present for each DC and fill up with cheaper bits such as books, dvd, Lego figures etc.

IME, the DCs hone in on one gift anyway and ignore the rest :o

YANBU at all. Like you say he will get lots from family and you rotate his toys anyway

He won't mind one bit!

niceguy2 · 22/11/2011 11:15

YANBU but at the same time can you stick to it?

I was brought up with only getting one main present. But nowadays kids all seem to get loads. I'd dearly love to get them all one single nice present rather than a pile of presents they rip open then soon not use. It feeds the whole materialistic mentality I so despise.

However, neither do I want to be the only parent whose children only got 1 present when their friends got piles. I mean already I feel guilty because we're spending less than £100 per child whilst their friends are all getting laptops, Nintendo's, new phones, bikes, whatever for Christmas.

Given how skint everyone is claiming to be I really wonder how people afford it? I mean I'm supposed to be on a decent income yet I wouldn't be able to afford one laptop, let alone a pile of presents on top.

YANBU! But then I am buying my children goats from Oxfam! (and a big toy each, and a couple of smaller things) but I am already looking at their very full up playroom wondering where all the new crap things are going to go!

niceguy I also can't believe people spend so much, my budget is £50 per child!

cookingfat · 22/11/2011 12:08

Yanbu. Dd is getting one £20 present - mainly as we know she'll get far too much from relatives. She'll only be 10mo so no peer pressure, luckily.

PomBearAtTheGatesOfDoom · 22/11/2011 12:17

He'll probably have as much fun with the box as he does with the lego Grin YANBU

witherhills · 22/11/2011 18:22

yeah, niceguy, I said that for his birthday, and he had a pile of presents!
He did get a bike from Grandma too.

There were a lot of books, but it's still a big pile

There will be no laptops, phones, nintendos in this house for as long as possible.
