To think some people shouldnt be allowed pets!

With dh's work we move around every few years and its become apparent just what crappy pet owners people can be.

example, a lady put her elderly cat in a shelter because they wouldnt be able to afford cattery fees if they wanted to visit family... a few weeks later they purchase a very expensive kitten!

My neighbour spent £1000 (without telling his wife) on a dog only to rehome it again a few weeks later because he was off back to the uk for a fight (cage fighting, not a random fight) and his wife wanted to go with him and again they couldnt afford kennel fees.

Another couple have rehomed their dog after finding out the cost of shipping the dog back to the uk... it has been made blatantly clear to everyone here the costs involved.

A lady I know rehomed their dog as it started showing aggression towards children and she had just had a baby. Fine, children always come first but I think the fact that she shut the dog outside all day so she didnt have to deal with a dog and a child has something to do with his sudden aggression.

One of my friends got a dog to keep her company while her hubby was away then rehomed it saying she couldnt cope with a dog while she was on her own.... a week before her hubby was due back!

Alot of people are due to move from here soon so suddenly there are alot of dogs and cats up for rehoming because its just one more thing they will have to deal with. Disgusting and I think people should have to sign a register to keep pets so that if you rehome a pet for a crappy reason you shouldnt then be able to just go a buy another one because it suits them at that time!

YADNBU. It seems some fools get confused between pets and inanimate accessories.

flyingspaghettimonster · 22/11/2011 02:33

I don't think US military families should be allowed pets. I must read about 20 adverts a day saying 'we hate to rehome but we have orders to Florida and can't take with us' - often these are young cats (but no longer tiny kittens) or dogs... one advert caught my eye offering two sugar gliders they had bought 13 days ago for the 'new orders' reason. Excuse me, but it is total bollocks you can't take the pets with you. For starters the Military offer help to move pets, or the family could simply drive and keep their pet. Many more military pets are rehomed as soon as the owner goes abroad and the wife/family decide they can't be arsed to care for the pet. You know these same people just go and buy another pet as soon as they arrive in their new location. It makes me so sad that things like wide screen tvs get moved across states, but it would be cruel to drive a cat in a basket across states... not as cruel as dumping in a kill shelter!!!

YANBU

But the odd thing is there was a very vaguely similar thread about not having kids if you dont know how you are going to support them earlier today and the OP got toasted. It seems odd to me that we apparently care more about the welfare of animals than children? Or am I missing something obvious here?

Possibly just that its harder to accidentally buy a pet than to accidentally get pregnant all though not be much I think.....

entropygirl · 22/11/2011 02:41

Also I bet getting your dog's ears pierced would be met with somewhat more disapproval than getting a babies done....strange...

SouthStar · 22/11/2011 02:56

Good point entropygirl, but i think its because people assume they will be looked after once they have a child, benefits wise.
Dont even get me started on children with their ears pierced, one of my friends done it to her little girl who isnt even a year because she didnt think people could tell if she was a boy or girl!!
Saying that, they still tattoo inside dogs ears out here, I think its their way of chipping the dog but the vets now do microchips so I dont see why they still tattoo some of the dogs.
flyingspaghettimonster its pathetic isnt it, I call it pet per posting one of my friends has adopted a dog because a couple had two, brother and sister and they only wanted to take one with them when they moved. She felt so sorry for him for took him on herself.

hmmm I think in the case of obvious neglect the situations are comparable. But I think there are people that would berate someone for getting a dog they couldnt look after or support but would find it inappropriate to do the same for someone who had a kid. Certainly there seems to be a substantial amount of dog related berating but kid related berating is swiftly jumped on by almost everyone.

I do get they are different, Im just not sure they are substantially different.

tryingtoleave · 22/11/2011 03:15

The family across the road from us have a rabbit in a tiny hutch on their front lawn. It sits there all day, looking at the road. The kid who owns it comes out for about 15 minutes in the evening to feed it. The rest of the time it is alone its little hotbox.

I really want to liberate that bunny.

tryingtoleave · 22/11/2011 03:18

I think people get more defensive on the parenting issues. More of a feeling that we own our children, maybe? Or for some reason, if you love your children, nothing you do can be construed as harming them? (I'm thinking of the shouting thread where lots of posters said, well, I shout at my children but it's fine because I love them).

entropygirl · 22/11/2011 03:19

maybe you could? maybe do the pictures of your bunny off exploring the world and then return it a few days later? They might get the message...or they might get you arrested....

entropygirl · 22/11/2011 03:21

yeah there is a definite ownership of children thing. I happen to believe they belong to themselves and arent owned by anyone. (doesnt stop me hugging my DD chanting mine mine all mine in my head but does stop me even considering physically altering her without a medical reason).

SouthStar · 22/11/2011 03:23

I see where you are coming from totally. My dog is part of my family, there is hardly a photo of my kids without my dog in it aswell. And as a puppy she was 10 times more hard work than both my kids put together. So for me the emotions are very similar.
But nothing is simple when it comes to children. You could plan for years to have a child, doesnt mean you are naturally going to become a great mum. Plus peoples situations change you may fall pregnant with the means to support a child.... alot can change in 9months.

yes my shitness at being a mum is one of the main reasons I wouldnt impose myself on a dog....that and the fact that cats are like SO much better. If only we didnt live on a building site we could get one....

entropygirl · 22/11/2011 03:28

Do cats have foreskins? Having a google fail on that one....

SouthStar · 22/11/2011 03:34

Well I found a site selling foreskin cleaner for cats, dogs and horses so I assume so otherwise that company is going to go downhill fairly quickly.

I hesitate to free the rabbit because (besides not wanting to get caught by the neighbours) it is a white rabbit and I think it would get eaten by something in about 2 minutes if I let it go. Would that be crueler or kinder?

kreecherlivesupstairs · 22/11/2011 07:08

Kinder to liberate.
I posted last year about my DDs friend. They had three rabbits in a cage in their garden. They were going on holiday for five weeks and, rather than get a kennel for them were planning to set them free in the local forest.
Unfotunately we couldn't help out. We were away for three of those weeks.

ddubsgirl · 22/11/2011 08:21

im joined to the local selling pages on fb and see loads of pets on their, most because the owner or family member have a allergy and have to get rid and in news last night some fucking wanker tied his dog to his car and drove off :(

kreecherlivesupstairs · 22/11/2011 08:29

Angry when we lived in Oman, we had two kittens. I didn't want them but they were thrust at me by no neck woman in a rice sack.
I found one of three vets to vax and neuter them. I kept them safe and had planned for their removal to Thailand when we moved.
Sadly, both had to be PTS in one week.
Every July there were boards full of people wanting their pets adopted as they moved onto their next posting.

Gay40 · 22/11/2011 08:37

You are NBU. I hate all this disposing of pets. I'm not a crazy cat lady but they are part of the family - I don't see how anone who loves an animal could be any other way.
DP, who can be very cynical about animals (and careful with money), was faced with our poorly old cat and said "I don't care how much it costs, she is part of our family so tell the vet to do what he needs to do." Shock
