wasn't originally by Adele but Bob Dylan and to be feeling a bit indignant that a) no-one told me and b) everyone (including me) loved Adele because of that song and it wasn't even hers (although I do prefer her version)

Are there any other covers I should know about?

I agree the original was betterGrin- very ill advised album, Medusa!

ThatsNotMyBabyBelly · 22/11/2011 11:58

Venus was first sung by Shocking Blue not Banarama

More than a woman to me - Billy Joel

Agree re Tulisa saying Think was not a well known enough song was Shock

WilsonFrickett · 22/11/2011 12:02

lovecat I think there was some scandal at the time cos Natalie Unpronounceable tried to pass the song off as her own....

A few years ago we had tickets for Robbie Williams (I know, I know) and ABC were the supporting band. I asked a young friend who was supporting (she'd gone to the gig the day before me) and she said 'dunno, some band, they were quite good but they did a lot of 80's covers'.

belgo · 22/11/2011 14:13

I'm really surprised that '"Wherever you will go" is old enough to be covered! I thought the original was only a couple of years old.

The cover I had heard was the Elton John one.

MissPenteuth · 22/11/2011 14:17

Pfft. Next you'll be telling me that Gareth Gates and the cast of Goodness Gracious Me didn't sit down and pen Spirit in the Sky together.

KittyFane · 22/11/2011 15:02

I love Bob Dylan.

SuePurblybiltbyElves · 22/11/2011 15:10

Gareth and the Kumars Grin.

TheHamish · 22/11/2011 15:18

"Step On" isn't by the Happy Mondays...

Ihavewelliesbutitssunny · 22/11/2011 15:25

Really enjoying this thread. To the poster who suggested that people should get off their high horses, I think its just a bit of fun and we are all (well some of others more than others Smile) learning something. So thank you to Adele, I mean Bob Grin for inspiring me to create this thread.

Ooooo have just discovered that The Beautiful South didn't sing Everybodys Talkin first, it was Harry Nilsson Smile

It took me years to realise that the Pet Shop Boys' "Always on my Mind" was the same song as the Elvis one!

weblette · 22/11/2011 15:36

Enough talk of covers, I'm still traumatised by hearing SuBo do Depeche Mode on CIN. Aural bleach anyone?

allcatsaregrey · 22/11/2011 15:38

A (slightly younger) colleague of mine once piped up "oh who's that murdering the Tide is High". Hmmm that'll be Blondie doing the original version actually.

UB40's Red Red Wine was originally done by Neil Diamond.

Proudnscary · 22/11/2011 15:39

Hey Jude was in fact written by Christopher Biggins, not Paul McCartney

valiumredhead · 22/11/2011 15:39

Yeah, his version is much better with his gravelly voice...

Raahh · 22/11/2011 16:37

I am trying to think of any covers that are better, or equal to the original (Apart from Jeff Buckley's 'Hallelujah', which often gets cited as a good cover, which some agree with, others don't).

All I can come up with so far is 'A little help from my friends' as covered by Joe Cocker- he took a weedy, not great song with a Ringo vocal and turned it into an anthem. Wet Wet Wet, however, returned it to twee-ness.Grin

QuickLookBusy · 22/11/2011 16:38

Oh "Make You Feel My Love" is one of my favourite songs.

The first version I ever heard was by Brian Ferry. It is very beautiful.

Every time I am forced to listen to Radio 1 on the way to college with DD2, someone seems to have pinched a song from yesteryear and remixed it . I always say "Oh I remember this from the 80s" DD never ever believes me, until I force her to google it.

I wonder if there will be a time when every song has been written and there are no more words or tunes left? sorry going off on a tangent there

belgo · 22/11/2011 16:39

QuickLookBusy (love the name!) there are loads of good singer/songwriters still around, who are coming up with original tunes. Jack White of the White Stripes springs to mind.

QuickLookBusy · 22/11/2011 16:47

I know belgo. Was just being silly.

I really like Cold Play, James Morrison, Adele, Elbow ect, they all write their own stuff.

AbsofCroissant · 22/11/2011 16:48

Oh dear. The Youf of today.

AbsofCroissant · 22/11/2011 16:49

Who is this Adele woman?

madhairday · 22/11/2011 16:51

And 'Hey Baby' was Bruce Channel in 1962 and didn't have 'ooh. aaah' all the way through in annoying fashion.

JingleAllTheSoddingWay · 22/11/2011 16:52

I knew most of these and I'm young (ish)

I love CCR! Grin

Jack White is incredibly derivative, though. His band The Raconteurs' first single Steady As She Goes is a total rip off of Joe Jackson's Is She Really Going Out With Him? and another one they did (which escapes me now) is also a total rip of something else...
