We (me, dp and 2 children) are considering next christmas of booking a cottage somewhere with my dps two sisters and thier children (four children between them).
Initially im very scared at the cost, must be thousands for xmas.

im trying to look them up online (children awoke at 4, nice) an ive put in dates but the prices are 450, is that each or for all of us?

Surely it should cost more than that?

Anyone have an experience of doing this?

Thanks

sorry, if your up to, i share your pain.

You get 7% off cottages4you properties if you go through the link on the Mumsnet Offers page. And 5% off hoseasons. That can save quite a bit.

redlac · 21/11/2011 07:19

Thanks Gin! I've just snorted tea all over myself :)

ginmakesitallok · 21/11/2011 07:41

Well - I'm sure the cottage would be lovely. If you are booking a cottage with the intention of locking yourselves away for a few days, with just some nice country walks it would possibly be perfect. But if you are intending to wander into the village and experience a winter wonderland you are not likely to get it in Arbroath. (Nice to visit to pick up some smokies though)

knittedbreast · 21/11/2011 07:48

is that due to snow Gin?

and thanks for the tip of mn discount! will have to use that for sure

We have booked several cottages before. Sometimes on our own, lots of times with kids and a few breaks with friends and family.

We tend to split the cost of the property between the number of adults going (but again we all have roughly the same number of kids + or - a baby here and there [wink[)

We have stayed [http://www.welcomecottages.com/sites/welcomecottages/pages/PropertyDetails_C.aspx?QS=D4AEEAA9-A084-45F2-8BD2-90AFF1394134~C~W40522~WEL~216~GBP~14~7~12-21-2012~A~N~3~6BBE83D5-655C-8791-E53C-64B0C09C205F~4986~0~28~N~N~N~N~N here] with two other families. 10min in car to shops etc but still semi-rural for a quiet break. Although just seen xmas price Shock

Also stayed [http://www.english-country-cottages.co.uk/sites/english-country-cottages/pages/PropertyDetails_C.aspx?QS=2B831DC8-E0A4-4868-B1DF-DDB2FE4FD44A~C~IPW~HCG~216~GBP~12~0~~A~N~1~2a6380bc-42cc-4088-ba72-db5020ce0995~19728~0~3~N~N~N~N~N here] with 3 other couples and 5 kids... it was our 'emmerdale farm' experience, but great location and pretty house.

Finaly I would reccomend [http://www.english-country-cottages.co.uk/sites/english-country-cottages/pages/PropertyDetails_C.aspx?QS=2B831DC8-E0A4-4868-B1DF-DDB2FE4FD44A~C~SNNP~HCG~216~GBP~12~0~~A~N~3~2a6380bc-42cc-4088-ba72-db5020ce0995~29173~0~26~N~N~N~N~N here] as it is my all time favourite family hideaway! Highland wildlife park is nearby, lots of festive treats, sledging, skiing, reindeer sleigh rides etc within 15min of the property as well as a few lovely pubs, steak house etc. That said if you are booking anywhere over christmas remember the weather is a major factor. DH and I were once snowed out of a hotel we had booked in the lake district and ended up in Chester for a few nights as it was as far as we could go safely :)

ginmakesitallok · 21/11/2011 14:42

Op- no it's due to arbroath being a dump!

redlac · 21/11/2011 14:44

again with the snorting of the tea Gin!

OP I agree with Gin - there are much nicer places in Scotland to spend Christmas in rather than Arbroath. Also I would say that £800 is too cheap and the place won't be up to much. You can pay in the region of £500-£800 for 5 days in the summer in Aviemore for example so I would say £800 at christmas is too cheap and I would worry that it would be a dump.

OhdearNigel · 21/11/2011 14:46

To get a correct price go all the way through the booking process until the moment you put your credit card in. That will tell you concretely how much it will cost.

OhTheConfusion · 22/11/2011 09:11

Have to agree with Gin and Red, avoid Arbroath! If you fancy that are go to St. Andrews instead.

whoneedssleepanyway · 22/11/2011 09:16

We have booked somewhere for Christmas this year, we did it 2 years ago.

Prices vary dramatically depending on where you go.

We went to Cornwall 2 years ago and rented a very nice cottage, 4 bedrooms, there were 6 adults and 2 DCs. Think it was about £850.

This year we are renting a converted barn near the Cotswalds and it is 6 bedrooms, and there will be 8 adults, 2 DCs and 2 babies and it is costing about £2k but that is only £500 per adult couple for the whole week (still a lot but don't see my whole family together v often as both my brother and sister live miles away).

£450 does sound very cheap.

I have used Owners Direct many times and it has never let me down have found some great places through them.
