...you should have your driving license taken off you and your car crushed:

  1. When should you use your fog lights?
a) When it is foggy, you are driving on a quiet road and there is nobody behind you. The purpose of the light is so that when someone does come up behind you they will see you sooner than if you just had your standard lights on. b) When there is a light mist and you are in a queue on a motorway. You might be able to clearly see the rear lights of the car twenty ahead of you in the queue, but surely the person directly behind you would really appreciate having your fog light in their face to remind them that you're there.
  1. When should you turn your fog lights off?
a) When there is a car directly behind you which is clearly aware of your presence or you drive out of the fog, whichever comes first. b) When you arrive at your destination.

Right, I'm off to nurse my headache

Idiots all day today in Norfolk and Suffolk, saw a phenomenal amount of people with no lights at all, visibility approximately 20 yards!
I'll join you in the Wine

Can someone please tell me why I have two fog light settings though? I mean I can seemingly pull the thingy out one click or two clicks, what on earth does this mean. thankyou.

gordyslovesheep · 20/11/2011 19:39

YANBU - why do people do it - silly sods

ChaosTrulyReigns · 20/11/2011 19:40

Front and rear lights??

jenfraggle · 20/11/2011 19:40

Jane the first click is front fog lights and the second is front and back in my car. I've got a VW if that helps

poorbuthappy · 20/11/2011 19:41

Jane, isn't that front and rear fog lights?

hellhasnofury · 20/11/2011 19:42

Front and rear fogs Jane?

Drivers who use lights inappropriately should be crushed not just their cars. No doubt I'll be ranting about fog lights/no lights on the way to work tomorrow.

abbeylockhart · 20/11/2011 19:42

Ive never used fog lights, never sure what they were for.

On the subject can you explain headlights/ full beam use to me cos i dont think im getting that right either?

ReindeerBollocks · 20/11/2011 19:48

Normal headlights for nighttime suburban driving, full beam for countryside driving (no street lamps etc). Full beam should be reduced to normal headlights when you can see oncoming traffic.

OP, YANBU.

Newer cars seem to have brighter headlights, which always leaves me with sore eyes.

JaneFeestelijkBierdekijn · 20/11/2011 19:48

Thankyou...so front only for the one click, then front and rear for both?

Oh that's good then, I've only used the one click occasionally, so hopefully it didn't annoy anyone too much even if the conditions weren't quite right.

The thing is I learned to drive in 1995 and cars have changed since then. As has every bloody thing else. I actually had to ring the council to ask them what to do when the sideways arrow goes on when the actual roundy green light is still off. It was well embarrassing. Having been hooted at earlier that day for just, erm, staying still.

You always know you're doing it wrong when someone hoots at you.

Givememorecheese · 20/11/2011 19:48

Full beams are for better visibility on quiet country lanes when there are no other cars in front of you or driving towards you. They are NOT for thanking people when it is dark. I would rather not be thanked than be blinded (another of my pet hates)

Oh and I actually got flashed by an AMBULANCE one night when I had forgotten to put on my headlights at all. I'd only gone about 500 yards having just left the out of hours at the hospital.

So, so stupid.

JaneFeestelijkBierdekijn · 20/11/2011 19:51

Surprisingly I have only ever crashed into a sapling, at about 1 mph, while reversing out of a parking space and turning round to tell my children to stop fighting. Massive dent in the car. Unfair.

Never hit a person or another vehicle, probably as I am so bloody slow.
