in the main look absolutely ridiculous and a bit manky. You can always see where the persons hair stops and the fake hair starts and after a few hours the thing tends to matt up and look well just horrid.
Why are they popular?

I have never seen anyone with hair extensions. Are they really that common? What age/social group?

Pippinintherain · 20/11/2011 07:57

YANBU they look bloody awful.

Clossaintjacques · 20/11/2011 07:58

I have seen people in passing with them and they are often accompanied with acrylic sparky nail Grin

If done professionally they can look nice and like part of the persons hair.
Cheap clip on ones look nasty though I agree

SlinkingOutsideInSocks · 20/11/2011 08:00

YANBU. They're very déclassé.

MumToTheBoy · 20/11/2011 08:01

I think hair extensions on children are awful. We have children from age 3 (nursery) with waist length extensions.

They take about 6 hours to put in, the weight of them pulls the real hair out at the root and the child's hair line ends up further and further back, giving the appearance of either premature balding or a massive forehead.

I've asked the girls who have it done and they all said the extensions hurt and take too long and are heavy.

No WAAY mumtotheboy
I am really hoping you are joking

Missymoo Even the expensive salon done ones look awful IMO.

Age 3??! Shock
Wow! I don't know any 3 year olds who would sit still for 6 hours having them put in!

MumToTheBoy · 20/11/2011 08:15

Sorry I'm not joking. I work in a school with a high percentage of African children and most of the girls have extensions.

Clossaintjacques · 20/11/2011 08:17

Wow Mumtotheboy that's young!

They are braided in I think, rather than being sewn or glued in like the horrid fake ones I've seen on teenagers. The mums do it very professionally and say the kids watch films while they do it. They last a few weeks then need redoing.

fatlazymummy · 20/11/2011 08:31

I saw someone the other day with a clip in extension, you could see the clip bit.
They are totally unnecessary, IMO. I don't get the point of them. Hair is hair, why pretend to have more hair than you have?. The same goes for false nails and false tans, IMO. Why pretend that your nails are longer than they are, or your skin is a different colour?
mumtotheboy it's sad to hear of very young girls in pain and discomfort, in order to fit in with fashion.

MumToTheBoy · 20/11/2011 08:37

Fatlazummy - it's not even their choice, they couldn't care less what their hair looks like, it's the mums who want them look a certain way. But it's not about modern fashion, it's more a traditional African style. The mums are all lovely and dress very traditionally.

I just don't like it cos it pulls their hair out and they say it is painful and boring to have done!
