To fail to see how the changes to the motability scheme will save any money?

So now can only spend a maximummof £2000, so no 8 seaters and limited 7 seaters.
So my neighbour will not be-able to get a car that fits all her children in, or she could leave the SN buggy at home and carry her autistic son and her baby......Confusedwhen she arrives at the destination.
Or they can all just stay at home.
The costs of mobility component of dla remains the same.
What is the point of the changes?

Have you got a link? Wasn't aware that the limit was being cut and that people could no longer get the larger cars.

If so - Hmm but not too surprised, sadly

KittyFane · 19/11/2011 16:07

£2000 in total? £2000 per year? If it's the latter, does that come close to covering motorbility lease costs?

This is what it states:

"Although we know that 30% of our customers take cars with no Advance Payment and only 5% take cars with an Advance Payment of more than £2,000, over 50% of the models currently listed in the Price Guide have Advance Payments above this level. We have therefore decided to rationalise the range of cars available through the Scheme by offering only cars with an Advance Payment of £2,000 or less, approximating to a Recommended Retail Price limit of circa £25,000. These changes will be fully implemented in December 2011.

We will, of course, ensure that customers whose disability-related needs require a car above this level can be accommodated. This will simplify the Scheme and focus on those who most need our help but it must be remembered that the quality of the backup service required by disabled people is key to the success of the Scheme."

Seems they are just reducing the make of car you can get I can see why they are doing it, there are probably too many people getting 7/8 seaters when not needed. My neighbour does, he has a huge car for just him and his son.

It's a non profit organisation, they don't make money from the scheme, and the scheme is paid for by the disabled persons DLA. if they decide they want to reduce the amount of car makes and styles they have available, then that is up to them really. I can't see the need to have loads and loads on their list.

Shame they didn't focus more on capping it at 2k for those who need all the modifications done for wheelchairs.

£2000 maximum downpayment, mobility element will still cover the lease costs.
But choices are limited. I don't understand how this will save money.
Sorry, don't have a link, neighbour heard via letter.
My neighbour needs a 8 seater to fit a SN buggy in.

I had a seven seater last time. The deposit was £150.00. It does say £2.000 or less.

mumblejumble · 19/11/2011 16:19

She also needs to be able to change her son's nappy in the car....he is 7.

It's fine if they want to limit it in general so people don't get larger vehicles than needed but the problem is when people do need it and the scheme no longer caters for that like with the OPs neighbour - but the statement sounds like they will endeavour to cater for specific cases outside the usual remits.

Agreed about the modified cars and the need to cap payments for those.

Dawndonna · 19/11/2011 16:20

The Zafira, which has enough room, is currently on at £149.00 deposit.

mumblejumble · 19/11/2011 16:20

Her deposit was £3000

mumblejumble · 19/11/2011 16:21

Zafira was too small......she paid the deposit out of her own meagre earnings

Mumle, the statement says individual needs will be looked at. Your neighour needing a boot big enough for what you say may just be a good enough cause for a bigger car out of the range.

tabulahrasa · 19/11/2011 16:38

It's to do with things like this

Because the Daly Fail are unable/unwilling to understand why people with disabilities should be allowed to add their own money to the DLA - and get more expensive cars Hmm

I mean, imagine, imagine people spending their money on BMWs when they're disabled..the cheek of them

NinkyNonker · 19/11/2011 16:40

The problem is that most 7/8 seaters are big cars, which are needed for wheelchairs, hoists etc. My mum has a big Citroën for this reason, she didn't want 7 seats but needed the space.

Delightful piece of journalism there

Honestly, don't bother.
