To be a bit peeved that my DS's school have banned Tig games?

He's just informed me that they can't play tig or any chasing games. He's a bit annoyed. The other obsession of his school friends is WWF wrestling cards (swapping cards I guess) He's not interested in that at all or football. any other schools done this?

maybe mildmannered but if that is the case then you talk to the children and remind them to be careful and you make sure there is proper supervision in the playground, not impliment a blanket ban on all tag games!

Chandon · 19/11/2011 13:09

maybe they can all wear knee pads and helmets? Wink

I think it's sad if kids are not allowed to run around at play time.

GreenEyesandNiceHam · 19/11/2011 13:18

My 10yo daughter broke her foot walking around the playground last week.

Just walking. Flat sensible lace up shoes, she just wobbled and her foot twisted over (ykwim). Now in a cast up to her knee.

Kids don't need to be running around to hurt themselves, these things happen Grin

I agree behaviour will become worse if the children are actively prevented from letting off steam.

worraliberty · 19/11/2011 16:19

Worral- it's dark by 4:30pm these days so not a lot of time to exercise outdoors during the week. (That's assuming no after school activity or after school club)

Yeah it is now but what about the rest of the year?

I still hear parents saying they refuse to let their kids play out in the Spring and Summer, which is their choice....but they then tend not to compensate and think a trip to the park once a week is going to make up for it.

They need to burn energy every single day and lots of it...especially if they're becoming overweight.

Exactly.

And for many parents week day park outings simply aren't possible.

And most children need a run around outside a couple of times during the day between lessons, not just at the start or end of the day, even if they do have an adult who can be around to look after them at those times.

worraliberty · 19/11/2011 17:54

Yes but I still say you can not blame a school if a child has become obese

That's simply passing the buck

School's encourage healthy eating and PE. If parents 'can't manage' to stand out in a cold street or over a park and watch their children running around, that's still not the school's fault.

ChippingInNeedsSleep · 19/11/2011 18:05

TMMJ - it boils down to the same thing really though doesn't it. They aren't allowed to play bullrush/tig/tag/ so if they don't want to play football what other games are left? They're not exactly going to want to do laps of the playground are they? ... and you can bet they aren't allowed to race each other either - god forbid should someone 'win' and someone 'lose'.

PlumpDogPillionaire · 19/11/2011 18:08

I agree that it would be unreasonable to blame schools - who didn't choose to be forced to sell off their playing fields, don't choose to be overcrowded, underfunded and understaffed and IMO are doing the best they can to function despite all of the above.

And of course it's not schools' fault that many parents can't stand around while their children play during the week because of work commitments, ill health or other reasons.

Time for TA packs of 'safe running games' then, mildmanneredjanitor?
