to say thanks for doing my survey just now (before it got deleted!)

Just wanted to say thanks to those of you who did my survey just now, it'll help me get a better mark in an assignment for my Digital Media undergraduate degree.

I really, really appreciate it! Grin

I can't say thank you on the thread as it's been deleted. Someone reported it as they reckoned it should go in non-member requests. (I thought it'd be OK as I'm a relatively long-standing member and an undergrad student, not someone making money. I think that was a little mean, but hey ho!)

If anyone has any other ideas about where else I could find uni applicants / parents of people who are applying to uni I'd be very grateful!

I'm not a member of any other parenting forums (well except netmums but that doesn't count as I don't post there - I just use the meet a mum boards occasionally).

Maybe I'll join some student forums, I think that's be OK ...

Sorry I'll go now, I've drifted off into talking to myself really! Grin

Thanks again Smile

Why don't you just ask MNHQ for permission?

troisgarcons · 18/11/2011 18:03

I did it - cant be arsed with stroppy people who CBA to help and make silly pseudo-board-police comments.

The words life and get a always spring to mind. You kust know in their heart of hearts they were overlooked for heading up the PA/want to be traffic wardens and are deffo neighbourhood watch member Grin

threefeethighandrising · 18/11/2011 18:05

I assumed as they deleted it that meant I couldn't do it, but you're right it doesn't hurt to ask does it?! Smile

I was kind of expecting an email to say why they deleted it (maybe it's on its way?)

Thanks troisgarcons

Mmm, but the asking for permission/gaining access bit is an important part of the university-level research process. So they should really have been the first port of call. They weren't, it was deleted, perhaps if you start again you'd get a better reception from them.

Get in quick before they start on the wine and the Big Red Bumsex Delete Button.

SuePurblybiltbyElves · 18/11/2011 18:11

Big red bumsex sounds awfully baboony. It wasn't meant to.Blush

threefeethighandrising · 18/11/2011 18:26

Hee hee big red bumsex baboons Grin

I've sent an email, I'm not sure if I asked the right thing, fingers crossed!

This survey wasn't for a full-on research module, it's just background research for building a website, to help with the design process. Just one small part of a large assignment.

You're right though, if I'm going to do any research as part of my final project (next year) then I should probably look at permissions properly. Good food for thought, thanks.

even more reason to make friends and influence people now Wink, you might get permission for the big one too. Send 'em cake, that'll work. Or gin.

Neuromantic · 18/11/2011 18:32

I told you where it should be but I didn't report it. However as a student you should be aware of the ethics of surveys, you should have asked permission from the owners of any site before recruiting participants via their website. Its standard procedure. Then they could have told you where to put it, which is in the paid part of the site.

Good luck with it though.

Normally, for research (any kind, whether it be for degrees or marketing purposes) Mumsnet expects first to be asked and also to pay a nominal fee before anyone posts random surveys in threads. Which I think is fair. If this forum turns into a complete marketing type of place people will desert the site, I know I will. So MN HQ are in their rights to check that your research is relevant to us the users before you ask us to fill it in. As you are an undergraduate I am sure they will be kind if you remember your P's and Q's.

Snuppeline · 18/11/2011 18:44

Obviously Mumsnet doesn't expect to pay anyone for putting a survey on a thread, they expect to be PAID.

threefeethighandrising · 18/11/2011 18:44

I imagine someone must have reported it. I've done other small surverys for my uni here before and not had a problem.

SuePurblybiltbyElves made a good point about asking permission.

However I'm not in my final year, and I'm not even specifically required to do surveys for this assignment - there is a general requirement about researching "user needs" before building our websites but it's up to us how we go about that. We get marks for using our own ingenuity. No we haven't had any lectures about ethics of surveys - yet.

They'll go into the ethics of surveys etc before our final year projects (Next year we have to submit our project proposals to an ethical review board for example)

But seriously this survey is so small scale! I'm not trying to draw statistical conclusions from it, for example. It's not a survey on the scale of something my flatmate (soon to me a mum too, but I digress!) who is studying psychology would do as research for example. Tis but small fry!

Snuppeline yes it would be a pain if mumsnet was full of surveys!

Go and talk to the Headmaster of Brighton College. A school developing a brilliant reputation. Probably not many applicants to Brighton University (which is not as well known as it should be in several disciplines). Talk also to the Headteachers of Brighton state schools. Ask permission to survey parents at the end of term concerts etc.

PreviouslyonLost · 18/11/2011 19:10

threefeethighandrising 'it would be a pain if mumsnet was full of surveys^...No, it wouldn't, I LOVE surveys Grin Checked back on thread and it was gone...thought it was because of my inability to eat, type, remove pet from table, drink wine, and spell simultaneously. Glad it wasn't. Good luck with survey.

PreviouslyonLost · 18/11/2011 19:12

Though last post may get deleted by the puncuation Police, sorry.

Neuromantic · 18/11/2011 19:15

but those are the rules, small scale or not.

cocoachannel · 18/11/2011 19:18

Can't see why anybody could be arsed reporting it, even if they were offended by you asking Confused I love surveys but am not in your required demographic.

Having said that, when I was breastfeeding and looking for support on Breast & Bottlefeeding I did get irritated by the 1000000000s of GCSE students coming onto the forum ask the same questions for their coursework.
