In thinking it's not "YOUR" tax?

Dillydaydreaming · 18/11/2011 16:29

Am I?

.

All these threads regarding benefits etc filled with people saying "my tax going to support the feckless blah blah".

Surely the whole point is that it's not YOUR tax - it's what your employer pays to the Govt. I pay tax and have never thought of it as "mine", in fact I rarely consider it as money I ever had, what I am interested in is the net amount left over and can I live on it + play all bills for the month (sometimes that's the scary bit Grin).
If you earn enough to pay higher tax rate then your take home pay (which, let's be honest is the bit wot matters) is going to be pretty good and certainly good enough for you to stop fretting about the single parent up the road having baby number 8 on benefits. I mean would you really want her life - honestly?

Or am I BU?

.

YABU.

The tax I pay comes out of my wages, so it is my tax. My employer is the local coucil, and I can assure you that they do not pay tax for me.

Nor do they pay my council tax, or the extortionate amount of VAT that is added to my petrol bill for me to get to work. They didn't pay my stamp duty or inheritance tax bill either.

Tight bastards.

Flisspaps · 18/11/2011 16:37

YANBU.

I don't see it as my money but as money that we all should contribute to ensure that society keeps going. I certainly don't begrudge any of the pounds or pennies I put in going to support someone who is out of work - particularly when unemployment is at it's highest rate for 17 years (someone needs to mention that to Mr Jeremy 'Why don't you get off your backside and get a job?' Kyle)

PomBearAtTheGatesOfDoom · 18/11/2011 16:37

By working for the local council, your wages and your tax are all paid for from the taxes of people who work in the private sector though, so none of it is "yours" slave
Just to stir the pot a little bit... Grin

Jins · 18/11/2011 16:37

Self employed people?

Are they allowed to call it their tax?

WineAndPizza · 18/11/2011 16:37

It does come out of my money. What do you mean? It's my income tax, from my income.

Plus as mentioned, council tax, road tax, VAT, stamp duty, inheritance tax, blah blah blah I haven't got any money left.

2rebecca · 18/11/2011 16:40

I'm self employed so it is my taxx as I physically pay it from my account twice a year. Even for employed jobs I think of it as my tax. I do think people should think about whether they'd be willing to pay for something they are happy of others to fork out for, and I do think people should support their own kids and hate the use of the term "single mother". These kids have fathers the couple just choose not to live together, it shouldn't allow either of them to opt out of paying for the kid they had.

pointydog · 18/11/2011 16:40

It is your tax.

But it is not your money.

Peoplw who complain about what their money is spent on re public services are arseholes.

pointydog · 18/11/2011 16:42

And if you're not happy with how it's spent, you campaign or lobby your MP/councillor or you vote differently at the nest election.

You don't get all stroppy and act as if you should be involved in some sort of individual consultation process.

soandsosmummy · 18/11/2011 16:43

DP is self employed and pays a huge amount of tax every year. It is HIS tax

I am on PAYE and pay tax out of my income every month. It is MY tax.

NinkyNonker · 18/11/2011 16:44

What Slave said.

Dillydaydreaming · 18/11/2011 16:45

Am loving slavetofilofax outing her council employers as "tight bastards" Grin
That made me laugh a lot.

I am employed by the NHS so tax pays for me too .... and I pay tax back from my salary. ( does that make me self employed Confused).

Your employer agrees to pay you £X amount for doing a job. That money is yours. Now, in order to ensure you contribute your "fair" share to the government, they've put processes in place to have tax removed from your pay before it gets to you. It was still earned by you though, which means that the taxes you pay are yours.

If those processes weren't in place, you'd still have to pay tax... but you'd just have to send them a cut of your sallary annually.

YABU

Maisiethemorningsidecat · 18/11/2011 16:48

Another one fully behind Slave

As for not wanting the live of single parent with 8 kids, of course I wouldn't - but then if she and others like her didn't rely on the Govt to fund their lifestyle there would be more money for people who have lives they don't choose but who really need assistance. That's where I want to see my taxes going.

Maisiethemorningsidecat · 18/11/2011 16:48

she and him that should be - there are fathers for those 8 kids

Grin

They are tight, and unlike my last job, there aren't even free pens. Or biscuits.

sunshineandbooks · 18/11/2011 16:51

I think it's worth remembering that even HRT payers would be struggling if we let everyone keep 100% of their wages but insisted that they pay for all public services without any state subsidy.

scaryteacher · 18/11/2011 16:51

I get all mine back as I earn under the tax free threshold, so it is my money and my tax refund.

caramelwaffle · 18/11/2011 16:52

Yabu

WineAndPizza · 18/11/2011 16:52

For God's sake Slave no biscuits?! I hope you're in a union!

Bluegrass · 18/11/2011 16:52

Of course it is "you tax". As a society we delegate the running of our country to a government that then decides how large a contribution it requires from each of us to achieve the goals we set for it. Governments do not have money of their own, they can only administer the contributions made by individuals and companies. That is why we have to hold them to account and constantly monitor whether they are using our money appropriately.

I think it is really dangerous to start thinking only of your net pay as "your money". It flips the relationship around and hides the fact that government is there to serve us, we are not there to serve government (and so only benefit to the extent that they allow us to keep some money).

Forgetting that distinction leads to a shift in power from you to them.

northernwreck · 18/11/2011 16:54

Yeah, the single mum with eight kids will have at least ten dads for her kids, innit.

usualsuspect · 18/11/2011 16:54

It no longer belongs to you ,so its not yours

Dillydaydreaming · 18/11/2011 16:56

Ah yes, I know bugger all about the tax system being a nurse and midwife. On the other hand if you need support while birthing a baby I'm yer woman.

Nope I have NEVER thought of it as MY tax. Tax is just something nicked from the salary before you see it and as such not thought about in my day to day life.

I just know that THEY say my salary is X but in actual fact it's Y. I don't even think about the tax is what I am saying.

Don't get yer knickers in a bunch folks, it's Friday and I'm just tired and thinking half-arsed.

I get what people say about stealth taxes and VAT tho.

OP posts:
TheRealMrsHannigan · 18/11/2011 16:57

It is my tax though, my annual salary, whilst sounding generous, is not my true earnings as I don't receive that amount. Why? Because tax is deducted from said salary.
