completely miss the point?

We don't often get takeaway but when we do it's after a stupidly busy week (like this week) that involves DH not seeing the DC at all and me doing everything child/house oriented.

TA means that a)I don't have to cook and b)washing up = 2plates, 2 knives, 2 forks and two wine glasses rather than cooking and washing up as usual.
Or does everyone else get takeaway for the Gourmet Experience?

x-posted with lots of people.

Hadn't considered the cost cutting reasons for fakeaway, which is odd because everytime I insist suggest to my DH we have takeaway his first response is always about how expensive it is. Of course if he wasn't having to work such long hours (for which he is paid overtime) then maybe he could cook once in a while and I wouldn't be so desperate for takeout!

Peachy · 18/11/2011 10:22

Here I can get a great Chinese meal for £15 that feeds 6 of us. Granted Ic an cook for far less but after a week like this where it has frankly been ridiculous - well if you can afford it...

(I can;t, but have a nice quick stir fry. Yum)

Peachy · 18/11/2011 10:23

Oh and umami paste? fucking brilliant, swear by it.

porcamiseria · 18/11/2011 10:23

what are ypu reading? womens circle, take a break, the Tesco magazine!!!!

dickiedavisthunderthighs · 18/11/2011 10:28

There's an Italian restaurant two doors from me who do take-away. Sometimes I order a pasta something-or-the-other which I could easily create at home but I don't because I CAN'T BE FUCKED.

WoTmania · 18/11/2011 10:33

porc - I don't actually read them I just see the covers and maybe flick through to justify not buying to myself

And I can't afford it.

FUCK YOU!

WoTmania · 18/11/2011 10:36

Sorry Shirley

I don't like the glutinous quality of chinglish takeaways, plus 90% of chinese takeaways in the land have the same recipe with all the crap they sell bought from the same wholesalers. If I never had a chinese takeaway again I wouldn't care. Plus all those shitty all you can eat Chinese buffets

Ghee is easy to use, you just use it in place of oil when frying onions/spices (is clarified butter essentially so you can cook it on high heat without it burning).

LordAlconleighsEntrenchingTool · 18/11/2011 10:42

DP and DD love the stuff, and get a yen for kung po chicken every so often.

GOD though chinese takeaways do the best chips. I always feel like the worst sort of englishwoman ordering chinese food 'and chips' like I have never samples chinese food in my life and I am one of those people who don't do forrin food.

TheRealMrsHannigan · 18/11/2011 10:59

I see your point OP, the only reason we get takeaway (like last nights fish and chips!) is because of tiredness/time limits if we've gotten home late after work.

I think the 'Fake away' recipes are probably aimed more at people who eat takeaways very often due to either feeling unable to cook or a very unhealthy lifestyle and want to become more healthy but still enjoy 'naughty' food.

I have given up on our Chinese takeaway, almost an hour and a half delivery every time we have ordered, I dont like eating at 9.30pm and can't order until I am home at 7ish. We stick to the fish and chip shop across the road or our local kebab house for a grilled chicken shish. Much quicker when I cant be arsed to cook!

gamerwidow · 18/11/2011 10:59

We get a takeaway once a fortnight partly because it gives me a break from cooking and partly because we just like the taste of takeaways. We rotate between indian, thai and pizza and although I could probably cook a version of these it would not be as nice.

I think the fakeaway receipes are aimed at people who eat too many takeaways so its a way to try and reduce the fat and salt in their diet. I eat well the rest of the time and cook all of our other meals from fresh ingredients so don't care about one day a fortnight eating crap.

NorfolkNChance · 18/11/2011 11:04

DH gets obsessed about cooking. Our pantry is full to bursting with stuff he has bought at specialist supermarkets and shops (inc MSG). The key to a good takeaway style curry is blended onions I have been told, it makes the texture right.

startail · 18/11/2011 11:10

Had Chinese yesterday as no way did I want to cook. It was my birthday, DD1 needed taxi service twice, so finally got back and went flop at 9.30 with takeaway and wine!
(would have made beef stroganoff, but steak was totally beyond ASDA, who's meat delivery obviously hasn't beenAngry)

Birdsgottafly · 18/11/2011 11:17

These articles are part of a widder national strategy.

I don't think many people realise how much of some peoples budget can go on take away. I do budgeting as part of my job and it is usually high amounts and becomes clear why basic household items cannot be afforded.

Also, how many children under 10 are fed on take away foods, nightly, if the family can be supported to make small changes they develop into much better choices.

These articles try to counter act advertising and the confusing messages they give, such as blue ribboin being a healthy choice because they only have 99 calouries in them.

At least the information is available to those that need it, some people are brought up in households that never cook anything accept breakfast foods.

NedZeppelin · 18/11/2011 11:19

We have a fab Chinese takeaway. 20 mins to deliver last night. Chinese chips and Chinese curry mmmmmm. You can buy wing yip stir fry sauces in tesco and they have MSG in them - we have them weekly...

Trills · 18/11/2011 11:19

YAB a bit U if you thinnk that the only point to takeaway is the time-saving aspect.

ShirleyKnot · 18/11/2011 11:21

Chinese curry though...

Oblomov · 18/11/2011 11:35

Obs is taking notes ........

Shirley : Umami paste
Previously : Gormeh Sabzi
Norfolk : blended onions

Thanks. You know, I'll be back. And there'll be trouble if I can't produce the most fan-dabby-dozzy curry, don't you ? Wink

Oblomov · 18/11/2011 11:38

Previously, I think you might need to give me a link because I don't know what I'm looking for. where do you buy it ? in a tube or a jar ?

MackerelOfFact · 18/11/2011 11:44

YANBU, I see what you mean. We only get takeaways if we totally cannot be arsed (and then always regret it because in the time it took to be delivered we could've driven to the shops, bought the equivalent money's worth of shopping, and knocked up a three-course meal from scratch).

But, I guess it's for people that think that takeaways are created by magic and don't realise it is humanly possible to concoct something similar at home.

Trills · 18/11/2011 11:44

You can also buy MSG from your local ethic supermarket. It's like salt only nicer.

aldiwhore · 18/11/2011 11:45

YABU.

Although YANBU from the convenience point of view, for me most take aways are badly cooked and contain a crazy amount of unnecessary calories.

I'm making slimming world KFC tonight, its GORGEOUS, not greasy, just as tastey, cheaper etc etc more of a treat than KFC itself and takes as long to make as it would for us to drive to a KFC and buy one.

I didn't realise that Chinese food was actually NICE until I started making my own. I can knock up a curry that's fit for ye gods. My fish and chips isn't half bad either. All cheaper. All bloody lovely.

I guess if you don't like cooking then all the above is pointless, but I love it.

MackerelOfFact · 18/11/2011 11:45

Ooh I bloody love Wing Yip.

susiedaisy · 18/11/2011 11:51

I have friends who have a takeaway every single sat night regardless and it cost them around £38-£40 every week !!!! They have an Indian and they have older kids so it's adult portions all round such a waste of money to me but there you goHmm
