To think that a sledge is a naff Christmas present!

My friend is buying them for her Dcs. I think it's a bit sad to open a present on Christmas morning that you only have a small chance of playing with, and then only for a day or two every year!
(disclaimer, we live in East Anglia, uk, this obviously doesn't apply if you live in Finland, or Canada!)

My dad's partner is getting my 2 boys a sledge each for xmas.

Quite a nice gift I thought for when it does snow, and we can keep it for the future.

But my youngest is 4 months old - he can't even sit up! And they're only little frisby style sledges so we couldn't sit with him on it! So think it's rubbish for him atm, but we can keep it for future playing!

I live in the West Country - usually the last place to get any snow, so when my parents got the DC a sledge a couple of Christmas' ago my private thought was that it would sit in the loft gathering dust. in fact it snowed a couple of weeks later and again last December. The DC were so excited to have a proper sledge instead of the trays most people we saw using! A sledge may not get used very often but when it does get used it's the best present ever!

trixymalixy · 18/11/2011 09:48

We got the kids sledges for Christmas last year, they haven't been used yet, but they were still quite excited opening them.

DeWe · 18/11/2011 09:49

We had dh's old wooden sledge for years and got a second last year, and considered getting a third. We've used at least once every year in the last 10 years. We live in the south of England. The wooden sledges go great on even a little snow.
Best was 2 years ago when the main road through the village was so blocked with snow it was used as a sledge/ski run. Some enterprising person even managed to find an abandoned road sign which said "road closed".

HereKittyKitty · 18/11/2011 09:57

YA completely BU! A sledge is a classic Christmas gift.

HereKittyKitty · 18/11/2011 09:58

Gah YAB completely U, even. Grin

My children manage to play on their sledges even when its not snowing. They go down the slide on them, tow one another on a tractor ( play one!) and also skid on mud on them. They are quite versatile. Now I really want a lovely wooden one!

mumeeee · 18/11/2011 11:34

YABU. You can use a sledge on grassy slopes even if it doesn't snow. Also it's up to your friend what she buys for her children.

ChippyMinton · 18/11/2011 11:40

YABU. I bought a cheap red one last year. The plan was to leave it under the tree with the other gifts piled on top. As it happened, it snowed before Xmas and I produced it early, to screams of delight.

voodoobarbie · 18/11/2011 11:44

Sledging is ace, the past few years we have a few weeks of snow so get some use out of it. Ours split last year and I have a new one waiting in the garage.

I suppose it depends, if it is a main present then YANBU. They vary in price I wouldn't spend lots on one and deffo not a main pressie.

MeconiumHappens · 18/11/2011 12:01

Awesome present!

Katiepoes · 18/11/2011 12:16

We're getting one for our toddler - everyone here seems to use them when it snows instead of strollers, and the past three years we've had pelnty of snow. Plus we're going to Austria for Christmas and it's unlikely to be the only time we go on a winter holiday so plenty of opportuntiy to use it.

You can get a back support for the wooden ones so small people can still use them, and the one we've picked out folds so it's easy tos tore, and can take a weight of 120kg so one of us can go on it with her if we want. Our swill cost 80 euro in total, I don't think that's such a lot for a sledge we'll have for years and years.

Mrsrobertduvall · 18/11/2011 12:17

I'm getting sledges for my dd15 and ds12 this year......they have never had one!

FetchezLaVache · 18/11/2011 12:23

YABU. My big sister got me a sledge 30 years ago and it's still one of my stand-out childhood Christmas presents. As someone said, it's far better than waiting until it actually snows, being unable to get to a Purveyor of Fine Sledges for several days and then discovering they've sold out.

CinnamonStar · 18/11/2011 12:25

YABU - if you can't get a sled as a Christmas present, when can you get one? Confused

Chandon · 18/11/2011 12:25

not naff at all, just wildly optimistic.

GwendolineMaryLacey · 18/11/2011 12:25

I've bought DD a sledge but it's not a Christmas present, purely because she can't use it unless it snows! But I got it because, as Fetchez says, you've got bugger all shane of finding one once you actually need it!

WhoWhoWhoWho · 18/11/2011 12:25

I can imagine being over the moon at getting a sledge as one of my Christmas Presents as a kid, and as others have said it may well get plenty of use of we have another winter like the last one!

I bought DS a sledge last year during the snow, which got plenty of use at the time, it lives in the airing cupboard when there is no snow about and DS often gets it out in his bedroom and sits in it, puts his toys in it, etc.

GwendolineMaryLacey · 18/11/2011 12:26

shane?? Confused chance

architien · 18/11/2011 12:31

lifechanger is right. I also think a sledge is a great present I wish I had been given one as a child!

YANBU

If I get a sledge for Christmas I will probably cry

cwtch4967 · 18/11/2011 13:01

Fab pressie - I bought one for our kids last year and planned to keep it for Christmas but as it snowed before that they had it early!

FantasticVoyage · 18/11/2011 13:15

"My friend is buying them for her Dcs."

Where does your friend live? 1947?

SaggyoldCHRISTMASHUMBUGcatpuss · 18/11/2011 13:31

"when can you buy one?"
Well I bought mine in August for £3 at a boot sale! Grin
