...to drive at 50mph on motorways and dual carriage ways...

...when the speed limit is 70mph?

I used to drive at 70-75mph but have cut down to 50mph and I am saving so much money due to reduction in fuel being used :) Before, on a full tank of petrol I could do two return journeys from halls/uni back to my home-town (150 miles) and I would need to refuel pretty quickly. I can now do THREE return journeys on one full tank and still have some left :)

I'm really happy to be saving money but I am a little bit worried about hindering other road users? So, am I being unreasonable?

Sorry YABU on a motorway. It is dangerous

YABU

BramblePie · 27/01/2016 22:06

Oh ffs!

Owllady · 27/01/2016 22:11

It's been 50 on the m1 here for decades :)

I'm in the NW and do a lot of motorway driving. Getting past 60 in the 'slow lane' as some call it is practically impossible these days. There are two extra lanes if you want to overtake those cruising at 50/60.

RainOhJoyus · 27/01/2016 22:17

YABU its scary enough driving at 45-50mph with a space saver tyre on on a dual carriageway which usually runs freely at 70mph.
I'm guessing no one has flashed/gesticulated at you as they assume you are 150 and blind driving like that on a motorway and wouldn't as want to startle you and cause you to crash/assume you wouldn't see them anyway.

So dangerous to try and ride in a lorries slip stream, they won't be able it see you/you go into the back of them in an accident. The lorry will be fine/untouched and you and your car will have been spread like butter under the underneath if the lorry and given a final nudge from the lorry behind for good measure.

Marniasmum · 27/01/2016 23:26

Where do you lot live? I see loads of vehicles travelling

ghostyslovesheep · 27/01/2016 23:36

you have to drive faster than 50 or the ZOMBIES get you

YABU and people like you are the bane of my existence.

ComposHatComesBack · 28/01/2016 13:05

YABU unreasonable, or you were back in 2011. I hope you've come to your senses or realised that if you want to drive at 20mph below the speed limit. If you'd driven like that on your driving test on the dual carriageway section you'd have been failed. That isn't because driving examiners like failing people but because it is dangerous and inconsiderate of other road users.

I am not advocating speeding and acknowledge that there are situations where weather and traffic conditions dictate slower speeds, but where conditions are good and the traffic is moving freely driving significantly below the limit effectively makes you a mobile obstacle that everyone else has to manoeuvre around.

  1. You are forcing HGVs in the middle lane whilst they try and overtake you you are effectively blocking two lanes. HGVs aren't known for their blistering acceleration and are electronically limited to 56mph so overtaking you is a long drawn out progress and creates a rolling road block and forcing cars into the right hand lane to overtake the HGV with the faster traffic.

  2. If you are constantly travelling at those speeds in the middle lane you are doubly dangerous as drivers will not be able to anticipate or see a car travelling at that sort of speed to brake/slow down slowly and people will be forced into dangerous manoeuvres to avoid a collision. Expect to get pulled over by the plod

  3. As mentioned above hanging in the slipstream of HGVs is stupidly dangerous. You will be invisible to them and are liable to end up sandwiched and shunted by them.

  4. Joining a fast moving carriageway from a sliproad at 50mph will cause an accident sooner or later. You should be joining the carriageway as at close to road speed as possible.

  5. If you cannot see the chaos this is causing around you, I would suggest that your observation skills and road knowledge are not up to snuff and you shouldn't be behind the wheel of a car.

If you are really worried about fuel economy/environmental impact, can I suggest ditching your car and doing the journey by train? If you want to save money, reduce the frequency of your visits back or lift share. Saving a few quid by playing hari kari and endangering others on fast moving roads really isn't the way to do it.

Oh dearie me. I'd better keep my 4x4 and horse trailer off the dual carriageways then. I do 55mph max, and only on a straight bit if it isn't windy. I usually potter up and down our local dual carriageway at 50mph when I have horses in the back. Have also ventured onto the local 3-lane motorway occasionally with the same rig. Have also seen tractors/trailers on the local dual carriageways. Can't say carnage has been caused by any of us.

ComposHatComesBack · 28/01/2016 15:01

If you are keeping pace with the traffic there isn't a problem.

Zoe2468 · 28/01/2016 17:17

Driving 50mph in a 70mph zone is absolutely ridiculous. I know that driving examiners don't take learners out on motorways but if you did say 40mph in a 60mph on your test then you would fail. To drive so slow can be potentially dangerous never mind annoying to other drivers, there is nothing at all wrong with going steady at 70mph or just under, going any less will save you a little fuel but for me at least, I want to get to get from A to B as quickly (and safely) as I can, sod the money and how much fuel will cost me.
