If everyone made a pledge to buy more products made in Britain, the country would climb out of recession much more quickly.

Are you asking or telling?

I don't really understand, what the problem is. Countries go in and out of recession don't they. How does it affect us directly??

crazynanna · 16/11/2011 19:47

I had a kebab last week. I do buy british.

Hullygully · 16/11/2011 19:48

Even products made in Britain are likely to be ultimately owned by one of the companies of the companies of the mulitnationals of the three people who own everything in the world.

But bless.

cocoachannel · 16/11/2011 19:50

Quick. Call George!

tuffie · 16/11/2011 20:05

The reason I brought the subject up was because we had new windows recently and one of the companies said all their windows were made in Yorkshire. The other companies imported theirs. It just seemed right to go for the ones made here in order to maintain those jobs. If that warrants a bless then so be it, but I do feel we can all do our bit by at least thinking about buying products which keep jobs here.

Well, I do buy Scottish strawberries, potatoes, beef, etc. etc. And we sometimes buy whisky and Baxter's Soup.
Oh and shortbread.
Does that count?

Trills · 16/11/2011 20:12

YABU

StopRainingPlease · 16/11/2011 20:25

Pretty difficult these days to determine where things are made.

duckdodgers · 16/11/2011 20:26

I think the consumption of Irn Bru is high enough here in Scotland Grin

LemonDifficult · 16/11/2011 20:28

YANBU to ask. I like buying British, especially food.

But international trade is what made the modern world so that's worth supporting too.

ThePerfectFather · 16/11/2011 20:35

You shouldn't be picking a product because just because it's British because you don't owe those companies a living, they should be seeking your custom the traditional way - making something you want to pay for over something else.

A product made in Britain should be good enough for you to want it over a foreign product. Instead, you might favour the foreign product because it costs less but does the same thing. That's good for you as a customer, and that's the extent of your relationship with a company.

If you want to buy something for other reasons, like say Fairtrade or so on, then that's a part of the product you are willing to pay for. What I think we should all avoid is being ordered to "Buy British" in order to prop up a lesser business just because we happen to be British.

gordyslovesheep · 16/11/2011 20:38

nothing would make me buy British wine - sorry!

LemonDifficult · 16/11/2011 20:44

Gordy - you're missing out! English wine is most definitely Having A Moment.

tuffie · 19/11/2011 18:10

I am not suggesting in any way that anyone should be ordered to buy British, just that it may be worth considering buying more products made in this country at a time when our young people are desperate for work.

I do try - helps reduce the old carbon footprint apart from anything else. And obviously, Irn Bru is better than Coke in every way.

However, was Angry when I read the label on the bottle of Buxton ('drop of pure Britain') water I'd bought the other day and found it's owned by bleeding Nestle! If I was going to start buying their products I'd at least have a KitKat.

Kladdkaka · 19/11/2011 18:30

You're asking me to give up Cadbury's chocolate?

From my cold, dead hands ...

HeidiKat · 19/11/2011 18:33

I thought cadburys was British, made in Bourneville?

Kladdkaka · 19/11/2011 18:35

Not British anymore I'm afraid. Owned by Kraft I think.

FabbyChic · 19/11/2011 18:36

what so buy british so that those companies you buy from can take on asylum seekers from other countries and pay them low wages? No thanks don't think I will bother.

HeidiKat · 19/11/2011 18:37

Does a product not count as British if produced in Britain or does the company have to be based in Britain too?

woopsidaisy · 19/11/2011 18:38

In Ireland a guy called in to a very popular daytime radio show to suggest "Fiver Friday". The idea is to help small businesses etc,by spending a fiver that you wouldn't normally have spent. People really got behind the idea!
I think they are planning another one soon too,as this one was so successful!
You don't have to buy British or Irish, just buy wisely-maybe helping out the small businesses more!
YANBU.

tuffie · 19/11/2011 18:38

Cadbury's was taken over by Kraft but thankfully they have kept head office and production in the UK. I was actually born in Bournville and grew up with the smell of chocolate wafting in our front door - heaven... Was gutted when we moved to Worcester. Worcester Sauce not quite such a nice aroma..
