To be annoyed/embarrassed that my shopping bill was up for discussion in Tesco's

Whilst packing my shopping 2 men behind me in the queue were commenting that I must have a large family as I had loads of shopping going through the checkout.
I just rolled my as as you do.
Then the checkout lady said " I wouldn't want that bill"
I felt I had to justify why my shop was so exp.
Some weeks it is exp because everything runs out that costs a bomb like dishwasher machine stuff etc, I also got some Xmas prezzies for the kids.
I do agree that I spent a lot but I don't need it commenting on!
Moan over

Ooh i hate it when im asked "are you sure you don't want X? Its cheaper than that" I think I will decide that for myself thanks!

WhoseGotMyEyebrows · 15/11/2011 15:12

I had one recently who tried to persuad me not to buy chocolate snowmen as they were expensive. They were treats for my dc and were on special offer!

TalkinPeace2 · 15/11/2011 15:13

"good afternoon madam, would you like to sign up for a credit card?"
"with my credit rating?!?!"
cue them shuffling away looking embarrased
then I wandered into the booze aisle :-)

AngelofTheLordiscomingDown · 15/11/2011 16:10

I spent £7.38 this morning at ASda. It's my big shop for this week. I just had to top up with things out of which I'd run.

Ephiny · 15/11/2011 16:12

I think sometimes the staff get told to make conversation wtih the customers, but don't really have the social skills to choose appropriate things to say. I've had some slightly weird comments, but best to just smile and nod unless it's anything shockingly offensive :)

Peachy · 15/11/2011 16:18

Talkin you'd like my DH, he ahs a similar approach with Chuggers of old; he could give a good 30 minutes on the alck of provision for SN kids and how much it costs us before they run away traumatised.

Whilst I stand there like this Blush pretending I don't know him.

proudfoot · 15/11/2011 16:19

YANBU

I do find it annoying when cashiers make comments about what I choose to buy or how much it costs etc. Small task is okay if they must but not about my shopping! I find it cheeky and rude.

proudfoot · 15/11/2011 16:19

*small talk not small task

LemonMousstletoeandWine · 15/11/2011 16:23

My SIL used to work as a cashier - she told me one week someone we both know had bought a pregnancy test Shock

If that wasn't bad enough she told me the following week that she'd asked her what the result was and the girl had told her she thought she was very cheeky and reported her to her supervisor!

SIL was quite miffed - couldn't understand what the problem was because she 'knew her'! Shock

I still cringe at her lack of tact!

squeakytoy · 15/11/2011 16:24

I was buying some of that Millicano coffee the other week... the conversation with the bloke on the checkout (who I do know as my stepdaughter used to work with him.. but we are only on sort of nodding terms)..

Him: Oh, have you had that before, I got some last week.

Me: No, is it nice?

Him: (as he scans it!)... not really, its crap.. totally tasteless

Me: Cheers Hmm

WhoseGotMyEyebrows · 15/11/2011 16:32

This is why I shop online. People are so nosy!

crashdoll · 15/11/2011 18:54

Soooooo, how much did ya spend?

snuffaluffagus · 15/11/2011 19:26

I was at the doctors once and came out to the waiting room and told my mum (who'd given me a lift) in fairly hushed tones that I had tonsillitus. Two old ladies in the waiting room started having a conversation with each other about my tonsils - oo she's got that tonsillitus, she'll need tablets for that.. my mum and I just started giggling.

ihatethecold · 15/11/2011 20:25

Ok, i spent £175! Grin
£40 was on xmas prezzies and i wont need to go shopping again for 1.5 weeks.i usually spend 100 per week.

TalkinPeace2 · 15/11/2011 20:34

when I do the self scan at waitrose I always worry if it takes too long to come up with the total - means I've bought lots.
the clinking trolley is the real giveaway though

JarethTheGoblinKing · 15/11/2011 20:36

wrong thread Talkin Wink ?

TalkinPeace2 · 15/11/2011 20:38

nope - huge bills on checkout - right thread !
175 is not that much
OP was being given a hard time IMHO

ihatethecold · 15/11/2011 20:44

oops, sorry :)

(I agree btw - bonkers-mumsnet-reaction-to-simple-OP-shocker Grin )

PickleSarnie · 15/11/2011 20:50

I once got asked by the girl ringing up my pregnancy tests what I wanted the outcome to be.

Signet2012 · 15/11/2011 20:53

i remember getting a pregnancy test and sanitary wear in asda. The check out girl said "you would have been better off doing two trips" I looked a bit confused and she picked up the pregnancy test "If this is a yes then you wont need the pads" then picked up the pads and said "and if you need these first you wont need them"

Logical indeed.
Did I really want my boss who just happened to be at the next checkout over hearing what I was buying... nope
