According to this article, it's the average amount. Does that seem crazy/incredibly unlikely to anyone else?

I know we spent nothing like it but then we've always been very cheap careful.

It includes a grand on baby food and formula fgs, which surely must be a maximum, rather than an average, given all those who bf and don't buy bespoke jars? And 800 quid on toys (not including bouncers - they're in a separate section) - surely this is unusual?

you are ignoring the costs of gifts - they cost somebody, even if not you, and so should included in the cost of a baby

Have just looked up median household income in the UK on wikipedia.

It's about £26K (post-tax) so I reckon a spend of over £5K is probably rather higher than average - just seems like too high a proportion of income to make sense. I'd reckon maybe £1-2K would be a bit more typical.

Found this while googling - very interesting... www.ifs.org.uk/wheredoyoufitin/

I may start a new thread about it...

I spent at least that much.

But then 90% of it was medical treatment which worked, so don't regret a penny.

I remember saying to the DP when I was 8 weeks pregnant and reading the Argos "Oooh, we can do everything under a grand!"... Then I saw the Stokke Xplory...

Nappies £400
Wipes £100
Formula 52x10 £400
Pram and Car seat £900
Second Pram £50
Cot,change table, wardrobe £480
Mattress £110
Moses basket £95
Soft furnishing for room (change mat, curtains, paint etc) £150
2nd Stage Car seat £180
Bedding £50
Toys/ Books £300
Clothes £200+
Bath stuff £50
Thermometer stuff £5
Food (jars and nibbles) £150
Steriliser £10
Travel cot and mattress £25
Bottles £20

Grand total- £3275...

Not including things like Infacol, Calpol, dummies etc. I actually thought it would be a LOT more than that given the price of the Stokke! Most of it was bought for us by the PIL though, and its all good enough quality for the next child or two.

i thought 21K was median?
