to think that applications to work in areas of the sex industry must be increasing.

After reading recent threads on here its got me wondering. Wages are low. Tax credits do make cock ups on claims and benefits can take ages to come through.
Some people dont always qualify to recieve anything and are left with huge gaps of weeks before any money comes in. A couple of years ago there was an article in a magazine called The rise of the dole dancer about this sort of subject.
But when someone has the choice of doing something like this or starving i can certainly see why someone would do it.
Hell i have done it. Ive worked in a sex chatline office.
By sex industry i mean anything from phone lines to escorting.
I suspect applications to work in this industry will rise even more once the changes to benefits and tax credits come into effect.
I worked in the chatline office ten years ago. I started that job after being forced to do workfare by the Job Centre. I did "work for your benefit" in a charity shop and then at my local council offices. It didnt lead to a job. Then they wanted me to work full time at Campbells soup factory for my JSA. Luckily i saw the chatline job advertised in the local paper, applied, interviewed and got it. I believe more people will enter this industry because of the new workfare as well.

Agree with SolidGold that if anything workfare should be about doing work for society that councils cannot afford. I don't agree with companies getting free labour - as others have pointed out, the taxpayers are then paying for their profit and jobseekers are losing out.

But don't most people on JSA also get housing benefit and exemptions from council tax? Taking these into account the money received works out at far more than £65/week.

www.boycottworkfare.org/

ArtVandelay · 15/11/2011 13:53

And I've given my friend who's all over this sort of thing a mail about it to see what he thinks and who's organising about it.

AnyFucker · 15/11/2011 13:54

have a look at boycottworkfare here

Asda is also implicated

Although funnily enough, it seems many big businesses are rather coy about how they use this system

AnyFucker · 15/11/2011 13:58

blimey

it seems the CAB, Barnardo's, the RNIB and organisations such as Gingerbread are also implicated

how the fuck does that work ?

also Primark (no surprises there..)

gawd above Shock

Hilton Hotels

AnyFucker · 15/11/2011 14:04

I am beyond disgusted

It seems the people forced onto these schemes are signing virtual "gagging orders" and the companies are not allowed to publish publically how many individuals they use who are working for just their JSA

wtf is going on in this fucking country ????

ArtVandelay · 15/11/2011 14:08

No problem. AF Do you fancy starting a Mumsnet based action to publicise this and how bad it is? (sorry for putting you on the spot but I don't know how these things start) I'll help.

AnyFucker · 15/11/2011 14:14

oh, bloody hell neither do I Confused

How about starting a thread of its own. Highest traffic is "chat" but not sure if that's deep enough.

catgirl1976 · 15/11/2011 14:15

I don't have an issue so much with a not-for-profit organisation but would really support any action to stop profit making companies doing this. Or at the very least having to publicise exactly how they are using this scheme. I am pretty scandalised.....

catgirl1976 · 15/11/2011 14:16

Actually not "not for profit" but where it was being used for the worker to get some good experience / training whilst helping a community project / charity. That I think is fine

But the reality of how this is being abused is a disgrace

WinterIsComing · 15/11/2011 14:19

I like the idea of a MN Campaign and would support it. Chat is an excellent platform because the libellous comments threads disappear after a certain time Wink

WinterIsComing · 15/11/2011 14:24

samandi I was thinking that too. Our social housing rent and council tax is about £150 per week and we don't get free prescriptions / school meals etc so the "earned amount" is more than £65 pw which is doable for a single person for bills and food (have done it) - but if you have children and if you have to pay for childcare and travel it's terrible!

Plus the fact that big businesses are already getting subsidies from the government in the form of tax credits for not paying realistic wages. And then they dodge the tax they ARE liable for!

Peachy · 15/11/2011 14:26

The biggest issue I have with workfare is some companies insist on you buying a uniform etc out of the JSA which means it costs people an amount that is very real from their benefits to work for a company who then does not hie a paid employee because they ahev workfare people in so tax revenue drops and.... I seem to remember someone at a well known supermarket being forced to buy a uniform that set her back over £20, a lot when you are on JSA>

Luckily I am exempt as a Carer. I;d gladly out ina few hours at CAb etc out of my own time but somewhat typically they are full of volunteers- presumably workfare people with far less specialist experience than I have!

Anyway

s for OP- it ahs crossed my mind tbh, in that the benefit system increasingly seems to want to forget famillies like mine (carer) exist and I wonder what I would do. but in truth I would be shit, world's worst sex line operator for a start. 'What are you wearing'?' 'Ebay jeans and a cardi with spag bol down it- oh where did you go?'

AnyFucker · 15/11/2011 14:28

ok

I am totally misplaced to do this as I have no experience of claiming JSA nor benefits

I also don't have the time just now to research this and make sure the information you can find at the click of a button is kosher, so may possibly get shot down in flames

Am gonna put the feelers out in chat though, and see if anyone has any experience

Come along and help me, guys

Peachy · 15/11/2011 14:29

'should be about doing work for society that councils cannot afford' that's OK but within reason

We won;t touch respite now as some of those volunteering for then local service are the same ones that hounded SN ds3 out of MS education and the wife of one who verbally assaulted me so badly I ended up with PTSD (and I am not the wimp I ca sometimes seem).

Some things absolutely- fence painting etc (though poor employed fence painter) but with sense.

Peachy · 15/11/2011 14:30

If I appear on such a thrad I will destroy it for you as I am one of the MN 'tagets' for benefit haters.

but you have my support.

ArtVandelay · 15/11/2011 14:36

Okay - then who is good at writing serious OPs about causes?

I am a little shy on this because I was on that thread about the child sacrifice petition and I thought that I'd been pretty mild and sensible but I got told that I needed a visit from Dr Reality and that I lived in cloud cuckoo land. So maybe I don't have the required gravity of tone :)

Iain Duncan Smith is the Minister for DWP EMAIL: [email protected]

Chris Grayling is Minister for Employment: [email protected]

We could send them emails and also the businesses involved. Supermarkets do not want to piss mums off.

catgirl1976 · 15/11/2011 14:37

I have to go out for a bit, but will happily support when I get back

ArtVandelay · 15/11/2011 14:40

I must also admit I don't live in UK anymore so think a resident would probably be more appropriate leader. I am very good at finding email addresses though :)

AnyFucker · 15/11/2011 14:43

just about to put some feelers out in chat...it may attract someone with more information/gravity/experience

AnyFucker · 15/11/2011 14:44

peachy, what do you mean about being an MN "target", love ?

AnyFucker · 15/11/2011 14:44

....or it may fall flat because I am crap at this

I can rant but I cannot do "gravity" Grin

WinterIsComing · 15/11/2011 14:45

I'm not very erudite or articulate but would be happy to support.

I like the fact that Supermarkets do not want to piss off mums. That is a major strength. Boots, too, coming up to Christmas...
