To be really annoyed that Lego seems to all be for boys?

DD (5) has just discovered Lego. I would like to get her some for Christmas, however all the play sets seem to be aimed at boys. I don't particularly want pink stuff, but a play set that doesn't involve a) star wars b) cars/trucks or c) scary dragon looking things would be nice. Is it just me or is it a bit sexist this Lego lark?

Why do you see Star Wars, cars/trucks and dragons as boy things?

Is that not a sexist view of your own?

Plenty of girls/women like Star Wars and they even drive cars and trucks you know Shock Grin

HugosGoatee · 14/11/2011 19:49

YANBU!

I loved Lego when I was little because you could be creative with it. Then it went all 'spaceship kit' or 'battleship kit'. I like the simple stuff, bricks, trees, people.

Andrewofgg · 14/11/2011 19:50

I suppose the makers design their products for what they see as the market. You can't take over the toy business and make it non-sexist!

gamerwidow · 14/11/2011 19:51

Why can't girls play with cars, star wars or dragons? What is an acceptable lego set for a girl? Unicorns? Vets? Nurse set?

tx12noone · 14/11/2011 19:51

My DD love Atlantis and Space Police. How about Lego City?

trixymalixy · 14/11/2011 19:51

What about one of the Lego houses, they're not too girly.

There is loads of stuff she,d like. Look on the website Lego.com

BelleEnd · 14/11/2011 19:53

YABU and sexist. Why limit your daughter to "girls' stuff"? And what about the lovely houses they do, and the big boxes of lego that you can get?

thousandDenier · 14/11/2011 19:53

I think your view is reinforcing the gender divide in children's toys. I loved star wars toys as a girl, was that wrong? Confused

trixymalixy · 14/11/2011 19:53

Or what about Harry Potter, it's unisex.

rogersmellyonthetelly · 14/11/2011 19:53

I suppose it is a bit sexist of me, but ime most girls arent that interested in fighting/monsters etc, whereas most boys can make a weapon out of absolutely anything.

You can still buy sets of non-specific bricks.

IneedAbetterNickname · 14/11/2011 19:54

Lego City, or a box of just bricks, let her imagination go wild!

Honeydragon · 14/11/2011 19:54

lego creator?

Lego brickmaster is often very appealing to girls?

My favourite was the space range as a girl

sponge bob

they also do legoville for people that have to have pink and ponys

and this is just of the top of my head whilst been mauled by an obnoxious toddler

DamnBamboo · 14/11/2011 19:54

You are being sexist, you know that don't you.

Helen18 · 14/11/2011 19:54

I got my daughter a Lego stable set, have a look on Amazon for Lego Belville.

You can also get lego bricks in a pink box, kennels, camper vans, houses etc.

rogersmellyonthetelly · 14/11/2011 19:55

She is scared of Harry potter !

JamieComeHome · 14/11/2011 19:55

Roger - you are stereotyping, or ds1 is not a boy. One or the other

DamnBamboo · 14/11/2011 19:56

Can't you just buy her one of the big tubs of lego then if you are really bothered.

The lego city range is great IMO

sommewhereelse · 14/11/2011 19:56

Look on the Lego web site, there are loads of things you don't get in the toy shops.
There are even pink horsy things marketed at girls.

Lego Creationary is a great game, like Pictionary with Lego.

Hannah31 · 14/11/2011 19:56

As a mother of 2 DDs and violently opposed to pink workbenches for girls, blue workbenches for boys etc., We have always tried to not do the whole massively pink, girly thing (although it is creeping in more and more!). I always find ELC is one of the worst culprits with everything coming in bloody blue and pink. And the photos in their catalogue are always boys playing with some stuff, and girls playing with other stuff. My eldest DD would love lego with cars in! We make sure they have 'boy' stuff too. My husband is slightly pathological about equality! We have 'neutral'(!) duplo, surely lego must just do bog standard lego! I realise what I have written makes no sense, sorry!

JamieComeHome · 14/11/2011 19:56

I want the camper van. Fab!

worraliberty · 14/11/2011 19:56

Are you saying girls are too dim to make a weapon out of anything? Confused

It's not difficult you know, I always made guns as a kid so I could play cops and robbers with my brother.

rogersmellyonthetelly · 14/11/2011 19:56

Lol you are right ladies, I am being sexist. I had loads of fun with my space Lego as a kid. I'm just used to her being such a Girly girl, it's a bit of a shock to be looking at toys that aren't in a pink box.
