Gold fish are large fish and need large tank with a good filter. There is no way that a gold fish should be kept in a small bowl. They deserve the same standard of care as more expensive fish,

I think that pet shops should insist on testing the water quality of a tank before selling fish. I also think that potential owners should show they have some understanding of how to look after their pets.

Springy; what do you think would be normal for a hamster? I'm curious because my DD has been clamouring for one for months (but I hate the idea). Is there such a thing as "wild" hamsters? (not being facetious...I'd really like to know).

I hate zoos too Sad

ah, now this is one of those looking back and regretting things. It's easy for me to say, but I really wish we hadn't got animals. I cringe every time I think of them particularly the rabbit who got got by a fox and really wish we hadn't. The kids love them for about half an hour a short while, then they entirely lose interest and it's down to you to look after them. I could tell you some horror stories, really I could but if you hate zoos you'll hate having a small creature trapped in a cage - even if you do let it out as frequently as I did (and suffered the consequences).

tbh, if you really must, it would be an idea to have a joint pet that is shared between your dc's friends. I don't know how realistic that is but at least the animals get kids who are interested in them and give them a good runaround. Though iiwy I'd stick to a dog or a cat tbh.

Thanks Smile I had a traumatic childhood rodent experience too and we have a very well-loved dog so I think I know it's probably not a good idea....
