To go to the doctors with my sore throat

So I have a sore throat and it's hideous. I went to the pharmacist on Friday but nothing they gave me has made any difference. I can't sleep as it's just too sore, i have had about 3 hours sleep in total in the last 3 nights. My throat is red my tonsils are huge and so is the dangly bit at the back of my throat which is causing me problems with my gag reflex.

So AIBU to make an appointment with a doctor today to see if they can help? I am phoning in sick to work which I hate doing. But I guess it's a minor ailment, it's just not minor to me!!

Not minor at all. Could be bacterial. I've had a sore throat since Saturday BUT it's getting better and my tonsils aren't going mad so I don't need the doctor. You do.

YANBU. Does your surgery have a nurse practioner? They are usually most appropriate for things like this and can prescribe if necessary.

Sympathise. I have totally lost my voice this morning. The kids are loving it.

i would go to docs if it continues.

valiumredhead · 14/11/2011 08:23

Well to be fair all GP's appts deal with 'minor ailments' otherwise you'd go to A and E, so ring up and ask to see a nurse! Hope you feel better soon.

Mummalish · 14/11/2011 08:23

Dangly bit? OMG sounds painful. Surely a dangly it shouldn't be there. Def get to docs asap.

Doesn't sound minor at all.

Get well soon.

starfishmummy · 14/11/2011 08:29

Hope you get it sorted soon.
If you can bear it gargle with (and then swallow) some soluble paracetamol or aspirin.

valiumredhead · 14/11/2011 08:46

Mummalish - go and look in the mirror, we all have a 'dangly bit' Grin

carabos · 14/11/2011 08:49

Isn't that the epiglottis (the dangly bit I mean)? Have you tried Tyrozets - they are brilliant anti-bacterial anaesthetic throat lozenges. Personally I wouldn't be bothering with the GP.

southeastastra · 14/11/2011 08:51

if it's keeping you awake you probably need anti-biotics, i had tonsilitus last year and it was so painful i couldn't sleep and had a temperature for days. was awful. hope you get better soon

maras2 · 14/11/2011 08:53

It could be tonsillitis.Go to GP.and get Penicillin. If it is bacterial ie. Strep B. then no amount of lozengers or gargles will treat it.

BecauseImWorthIt · 14/11/2011 08:54

I would - DS1 has just come out of hospital after having quinsy, which started with a sore throat! (Not that I want to panic you or anything Grin)

Theas18 · 14/11/2011 08:54

Go and get checked but don't expect antibiotics- expect to be examined and explained why treat or why not treat though.

Loonytoonie · 14/11/2011 10:24

Go OP, YANBU.
I suffered the whole summer DD2 was born - over 8 weeks in total. Felt like I was swallowing broken glass. When I couldn't take any more, went to GP who took a swab. Turns out I had Strep throat and even my hardened bastard famously unsympathetic GP said "Blimey, you've suffered".

You've tried the Pharmacy route, it's not helped. Time for GP.

shumway · 14/11/2011 10:26

Dangly bit = uvula. Try gargling and then swallowing soluble aspirin.

RainboweBrite · 14/11/2011 11:45

Please go. It sounds like tonsillitis to me. I had this earlier in the year, and I was ill for the best part of 3 weeks.
