To not understand why so many people still insist on going to the supermarket?

Having just read yet another supermarket angst thread (involvoing trollies), it made me wonder why so many people still do their food shop in this way...? Most of the online services are fantastic these days and so much easier. The benefits:

  1. Shop online from home at any time that suits you
  2. Many of the instore offers are available online
  3. You tend not to impulse buy so spend less
  4. You don't have to deal with dragging children round the supermarket - you could spend this time doing something FUN
  5. You don't have to deal with nagging for sweets/rides/comics etc
  6. You save petrol money
  7. Someone else packs your shopping and BRINGS IT IN FOR YOU!

Honestly, what's not to like?

Yes I know the 'I like to choose my own fruit and veg/fresh stuff' argument. I like to too but not that much lol Smile

And yes sometimes there are occasional problems with timing or items being substituted but in my experience these times are far and few between and the benefits GREATLY outweigh these.

We only live a few hundred yards from the supermarket, that would be the height of laziness to get it delivered Grin

And I get my fruit and veg from the local grocers.

LadyBeagleEyes · 13/11/2011 11:15

I'd love to shop online but unfortunately my nearest supermarket is 50 miles away and they don't deliver that far.

HoneyPablo · 13/11/2011 11:15
  1. Lidl and Aldi don't deliver.
  2. Sometimes I don't know what I want until I am in the shop.
Curiousmama · 13/11/2011 11:15

You know you're getting what you want. Also you an go to the back of fresh/chilled and get something with more than one day left in date. Plus dp and I quite enjoy it. Well dp really enjoys it Grin

Curiousmama · 13/11/2011 11:16

Meant you can go to back.

miniwedge · 13/11/2011 11:16

Yanbu. I see my friends etc doing their "big shop" and hear the stories about packed supermarkets, huge queues etc......

I do mine online, fruit and veg are delivered from river nene. No stress, if I need a milk/ bread top up I can stop in the grocers on my way home from work.

molly3478 · 13/11/2011 11:16

Its easier to go to the supermarket cause otherwise you have to make sure your in and I dont know if I will be or not. Also I like looking around at all the diferent things in person. I already have someone to pack and carry myshopping called my husband, he goes one step further and puts it all in the freezer. Wink

Curiousmama · 13/11/2011 11:16

Yes I use local shops a lot too, especially butchers.

Geordieminx · 13/11/2011 11:17

Cos the fuckers at my local tesco seem to take great delight in filling my bags with food that goes out of date within 24 hours.

What I don't understand is people who think shopping is a social occasion for the whole family.

woopsidaisy · 13/11/2011 11:17

YANBU! Online is so handy. And you are not tempted to put "extras" in!Grin. I can never understand why some people seem to take their family shopping either. Mum,Dad and kids. The kids get bored-fair enough, shopping is boring-and there are tears and tantrums...why doesn't one parent go shopping, and the other parent go to the park or something?

I'm with Dancergirl on this. However, we are fortunate enough to live in an area where we have excellent farm shops, so I buy my veg and meat locally.

I really can't see the point in going to the supermarket every week just to buy things like loo roll, soap, wine, tinned goods etc. Although I do go to a supermarket every now and again just to have a mooch around and see what's new.

woopsidaisy · 13/11/2011 11:18

Should have added that we get milk delivered by the milkman, and I go to local butchers for meat,'tis just around the corner.

AgentZigzag · 13/11/2011 11:18

Plus, you ought to see how much parmesan I get off the cheapo counter... Smile

Methe · 13/11/2011 11:19

I like going to the supermarket.

molly3478 · 13/11/2011 11:19

My DD loves going to the supermarket. I remember when I was little how excited I used to be going to ASDA the one in our town had a little shop in it with real fish and fish tanks in it. My DD has never had tears or tantrums in a supermarket cause they get excited helping you find the stuff.

Dandare · 13/11/2011 11:20

Too lazy to do the whole first shop thing - they all differ and it takes ages to find your way round! If someone else spent an hour or so doing it for me then I might return to it more.

Also my last/only experience of it went wrong as I missed the doorbell and they just cancelled the whole thing but didn't TELL me that it was cancelled so I waited in vain for a phone call or a delivery which never came...Angry

worraliberty · 13/11/2011 11:20

I get a fortnightly shop online from Tesco but as I have a Morrissons 15 minutes walk away, I go every other day to pick up fresh stuff.

All my kids are school age though, so I get the luxury of going alone.

Bloodymary · 13/11/2011 11:20

I do an online shop every 3/4 weeks, for basics, plus 'heavy' things like cat litter and tins.
But I still like to 'wander' around the supermarket looking for things that are knocked down in price inspiration.

TeWihara · 13/11/2011 11:21
  1. Erm, it's cheaper because you don't pay delivery charges, getting there and back doesn't remotely cost us £5 in petrol. If we get the bus it's only £1.20 in fact.

  2. Writing a list and only buying what's on it is also another stunningly original way of avoiding impulse buying.

  3. I like to pick my own fruit, veg and meat so I can get the nicest pieces.

  4. You can do your own substitutions, including the decision to make a completely different meal if something vital is unavailable.

  5. Keeps more people employed staking shelves and at checkouts etc.

  6. I quite like the supermarket and have never been judged, treated badly by staff or had a row with another customer...

cantspel · 13/11/2011 11:21

You dont get to go root around on the whoopie shelf if you shop online.

It makes the weekly shop money go alot further if i can pick up a pack of chicken breast for 29p or a bag og baggels for 9p

crashdoll · 13/11/2011 11:21

The reason why I brave the shops is because we always get crappy dates and their replacements are terrible. I asked for original pringles not salsa dip because it's with the doritos right next to the damn pringles! I also like to inspect my foodstuffs before purchase. Who wants manky apples?

NinkyNonker · 13/11/2011 11:21

The farm shop doesn't do deliveries, I then feel upright about spending £4 to het the remaining teeny bit delivered.

Besides, dd loves riding around in the trolly.

cory · 13/11/2011 11:22

My reasons for going to the supermarked:

no environmental damage as I walk there and back

I don't have to pay for delivery as walking is free

I spend less because I know I have to cart it home

I can choose the freshest looking fruit and veg

I can get inspiration from seeing what there is instore

I get to meet and talk to people (have been shopping in the same COOP for nearly 20 years)

I have been able to use it to train my children to behave in public without nagging

I can do my own packing and avoid damage to goods

What's not to like? Grin

niceguy2 · 13/11/2011 11:23

Cos Aldi don't deliver. The day they do is the day I'll stop going to the Supermarket.

The end.
