Everytime the M&S Christmas as comes on?

How many times must this be endured in the run up to The Day?

(The John Lewis ad, on the other hand...)

I just checked them out on YouTube (don't have aTV). The M&S one was spectacularly bad: most of the contestants singers don't have the right voices for that song. I barely made it to the end - although glad that I did as the girl singing at the end at least could sing! Thought that her four ear studs kind of got in the way of the M&S logo though...

redlac · 13/11/2011 09:21

I cried at the JL advert - the fucking awful cover version brought tears to my ears and I wanted to rip my ears off

HoneyPablo · 13/11/2011 09:23

I 've just seen the John Lewis ad on the other thread and I liked it. I love the idea of a Smiths song being used in a xmas advert. I aslo loved the references to old films. It won't make me shop in John Lewis though.
I haven't seen the Litttlewoods one yet. Off to have a look.

TunaTiebacks · 13/11/2011 09:44

The M&S one is terrible, and it really annoys me how all the ladies get for gifts is underwear and shoes! Had a little tear at the JL one though, lovely.

redlac · 13/11/2011 09:45

I too love the idea of a Smiths song on a Christmas advert I just wish they'd used the original rather than someone murdering it

HoneyPablo · 13/11/2011 09:57

I have seen the Littlewoods advert and am struck by how materialistic it is. I know they are selling their products but it is all about the brand names and the expensive gadgets.
How many young children say 'mother' anyway?

Sparklingbrook · 13/11/2011 10:01

Or 'muvva'. Grin

BertieBotts · 13/11/2011 10:13

Oh god, just looked that one up! Awful! Don't dads buy Christmas presents then?

JL one is meh.

Nanny0gg · 13/11/2011 10:54

Have none of you youngsters ever heard 'My Brother' by Terry Scott?

And I'm glad it's not just me regarding M&S. I'm dreading putting the TV on at all now. It grates worse than that daft opera bloke.

Nanny - you are not alone - I have a cd with the Terry Scott version on it.

That littlewoods ad has caused some ire, though - the implication that it is just mum who does all the present buying, and the fact that all the gifts are horribly expensive things like laptops.

Am I alone in not having seen the M&S ad yet? It's not as if I don't watch plenty of tv. Blush

HoneyPablo · 13/11/2011 11:08

I remember the Terry Scott song and had happily forgotten it until I saw the Littlewoods ad.

Sparklingbrook · 13/11/2011 11:09

But you can have a Littlewoods Christmas and have all those expensive gadgets! Then your 'muvva' can repay Littlewoods at 2p a week for the next bajillion years.

Nanny0gg · 13/11/2011 11:15

And it's no different to the Boots ad which also shows that Christmas is down to the women.

And if I'm honest, do I really want my husband taking over it all?
Probably not...

OP posts:
woopsidaisy · 13/11/2011 11:21

Wah! I haven't seen either!

RustyBear · 21/11/2011 11:44

I pretty much agree with Charlie Brooker...

wildfig · 21/11/2011 12:07

I hate the M&S ad. It is giving me bad thoughts about M&S for the first time in ages. If they made it more seasonal by striking off each eliminated singer with a plague of frogs/locusts/firey rain, I might like it more.

I've not seen any of these... Hurrah for living in my room a cave :o

InDulciJubilo · 21/11/2011 13:20

I don't mind the M&S one because watching the 'artistes@ and listening to their singing means I can ifnore the M&S side of it.

I didn't like the JL one (which I only found on You Tube because of Mumsnetters suggestions) much because I felt that the little angelic looking boy showed rather bad manners, shovelling a meal into his mouth and leaving the table before he excused himself. Wasn't he aught to knock at hisparents' bedroom door if it were losed?! You'd think that JL would have shown some standards here.

InDulciJubilo · 21/11/2011 13:20

closed.

Littlewoodsmuvvah · 21/11/2011 13:24

Haha he could have been in for a shock if mum and dad were exchanging 'gifts'. :)

Meta4 · 21/11/2011 16:05

Rusty another vote for Charlie Brooker. The man is a sardonic genius.
