YANBU Its because the army is predominantly male. Also certain positions in the army are men only aren't they. Doesn't make it right to ignore the brave women who do serve though.

meditrina · 11/11/2011 20:22

There's more to the British military than just the Army.

Plenty of female personnel in frontline roles and elsewhere in harm's way.

OP: YANBU: but I did just see a Channel 4 News report which managed throughout to remember that there are three services and serving personnel of both sexes. I wish more of the media could reach that standard.

MrsSnaplegs · 11/11/2011 20:24

Carrie thank you - I guess those of us who are serving mostly accept the media and their lack of understanding but it is nice when someone remembers the females as wellGrin

MogandMe · 11/11/2011 20:31

My mum was in the army, my current boss (female) is in the army (served on the front line as a medic), several mutual friends of mine and my boss are female soldiers. My sisters friends (female) are also joining up too after completing uni and in fact some of my female friends have served in the TA.

Women in the army ROCK! Grin

Towndon · 11/11/2011 20:36

YANBU. If it winds you up then watch the BBC instead - more likely to refer to these people as men and women, or service men and women.

thefurryone · 11/11/2011 20:47

YANBU I've been listening to radio 2 this week and they've had a segment called 'songs my son loved, which is fine but what about people who have lost their daughters at war Sad

pigletmania · 11/11/2011 21:43

stranded how narrow minded your friend is! There was a documentary a while back about the women who serve on the front line.

penguin73 · 11/11/2011 22:07

thefurryone - I'm guessing the name comes from the fact that the people featured are sons - maybe the families who have lost daughters (which are very few) didn't want to take part?

BistoBear · 11/11/2011 22:25

I'm in the TA and I served in Iraq a few years back. My Mum went to a families day where the officer kept referring to sons, husbands and partners the whole way through his presentation. At the end, my lovely Mum stood up and said "you keep mentioning sons and husbands and partners; what about my daughter?" I was extremely proud of my wee Mum for speaking out :)

CarrieInAnotherBabi · 12/11/2011 12:05

Penguin I guess that was probably the case, it's one of those things that you feel a bit crap kicking up a fuss about, but every time I heard the name of the slot it did rankle a little. I know most of the casualties of war are men, but that is no reason to act like there aren't also some very brave women putting their lives on the line.

CarrieInAnotherBabi · 12/11/2011 19:38

i was thinking of sending a written complaint in to itv, what do you think?

cocoachannel · 12/11/2011 19:58

YANBU. My Mum and two godmothers were in the Army. Mum had to leave when she got pregnant with me. Dad was in the RAF but they didn't throw him out Wink

lurkerspeaks · 12/11/2011 20:09

Most of the people I know who are currently in the Forces are woman.

I've sent numerous care parcels to Bastion. I'm humbled by the work they do.
