She is leaving me in the lurch (a bit)

In short I am going to a fancy dress party at the weekend with two of my children. I am as going as Arwen from LOTR (found a dress and elf ears on ebay) to complete the look I bought some velvet asked my mum who is better at sewing than I to make it into a cloak and sent her the material a couple of weeks ago. She should have the time as she does not work and she seemed quite taken with the idea and enthused - but for some reason she said she would wait until she had stopped looking after her friends dog before she would start making it.

In the meantime I have sourced and started making two outfits for my kids - Jewel from Rio and Luke Skywalker.

I spoke to Mum on tue and listened symapathetically as she was telling me about her 'friend' who disappered abroad for a fortnight and left Mum looking after her dog (she was meant to be back in a week but was still away). The cloak was not mentioned.

I got a text later saying she was not going to be able to make the cloak and she was going to return the material. I was peeved but I thought I would still be able to fashion something. Today get another text saying 'can I keep the material and try again?' arrrggghhh I have asked her to return the material and I hope it arrives tommorrow. Otherwise I have wasted £25 (material and postage as I sent cash to mum to buy thread and cover postage etc.

She was doing me a favour but I was very clear that she did not have to do it.

YANBU she said she would do it then let you down. Get the material back and google "How to make a cloak" Hope it goes well would love to see pics, I'm a bit of a fancy dress person too.

Sainsburys have lots of adult sized cloaks and costumes they're selling chealy after Halloween. Could you get one of those and embellish it a bit?

leeloo1 · 10/11/2011 19:18

cheaply even!

PomBearAtTheGatesOfDoom · 10/11/2011 19:20

If you can lay hands on a copy of Beauty by Sheri S Tepper (fantasy novel) there are quite detailed instructions for making a cloak from a rectanular piece of material in the story. (Title character makes a magic invisibility cloak, but I expect it works with normal velvet too... Grin )

people calling the OP U and selfish etc should actually READ THE TITLE FIRST Wink

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 10/11/2011 19:32

OP- YABU, I'd give her a right bollocking Grin

Funtimewincies · 10/11/2011 19:44

Possibiliy Fanjo, but there's something to be said for upholding the MN tradition of leaping in feet and gob first Grin.

Altogether now...WON'T SOMEONE THINK OF THE CHILDREN Shock!

Thank you for your kind suggestions. I should be able to come up with something - can't bear the thought of 3 metres of red velvet going to waste. Mums' would have been neat and carefully done while I am a bit clumsy and slapdash more creative.

I will put up photos if I don't makeva complete hash of them all.

It's the principle of the thing, isn't it?

My husband does this. I'd rather him just be honest and say "no, I'm not going to bother to sort out the recycling" for example, rather than telling me he's going to do it and then not.

bigmouthstrikesagain · 13/11/2011 08:34

I have put a photo of the costumes on my profile the life looked great but I found it was too hot to wear the cloak for long! Still I made it myself which I didn't Think I could so thanks Ma.
