AIBU to think that ending your emails with "peace out" makes you a twat?

Someone I have to deal with re: work always ends her emails with "peace out, her-first-name".

WTF, have we suddenly been transported back to the 70s???

Or even worse, "namaste, her-first-name" with a twattish little apostrophe at the end of "namaste". Namaste is Sanskrit, not fucking French. There is no accent aigu on the final e.

And these are professional communications, not two yoga teachers emailing each other.

FFS.

BTW I do have a life, I have lots of other things to be concerned about, no, this is not a big deal, in fact it's trivial as shit, but it's bugging me. :o

I agree Jacksmania . The love and light stuff is hilarious . I would be tempted to think they are a bit barking .

HerdOfTinyElephants · 09/11/2011 23:42

The Big Top Boss of my company used to send out weekly emails to the entire company that were basically stream-of-consciousness rambles packed full of "......"

I'm partial to the occasional "..." myself but these were just incredibly annoying.

Jacksmania · 09/11/2011 23:44

Do you think I should send peace-out woman an email saying "you realize that when you sign your emails "peace out" you sound like a twat"?

Actually I can't. Twat is a pretty serious insult here (West Coast of Canada), it's not used as freely as on MN elsewhere. I couldn't send it from my work email anyway :o

I have a contact on Fb who updates once a week or so with at least four or five !!!! at the end of every sentence. Even if its just "love my kids!!!!" or "looking forward to the weekend!!!!!" well, big whoopee love.

drives me fuckin' nuts, i don't know why really, it just does.

hmc · 09/11/2011 23:48

It's a bit affected and not my thing - but doesn't make the other person a twat, just different to you

Andrewofgg · 10/11/2011 00:31

End yours Make War Not Love and see the effect!

Melty · 10/11/2011 01:09

Someone I work with signs all his work emails (to me anyway) with about 10 kisses; he forwarded an email request from someone else too and the trail of replies fom him to this guy were all kisses. So its not just a once off accidental thing.
I was gobsmacked. I try to be professional. His emails make me want to vomit. I don't actually like him very much, dont know him outside work, and have no idea where the effusive gushy kisses come from. I mean WHO does that, at work?

Although I accidently once typed "retards" instead of regards. Nearly died with embarrassment. Bastard Spell check let it through.

And I might have accidently signed off to someone else I don't know with: love and kisses. I apologised to her though, she thought it was funny. And I only ever did it once.

Jacksmania - I own up to starting voicemail messages often with "This is a message for firstname lastname", especially when the voicemail is one of the "You have the reached the inbox of zero-seven-seven-seven-three...etc".

I'm doing this in the vain attempt that should I inadvertently have dialled the wrong number the message might be passed on or back to me

Jacksmania · 10/11/2011 02:03

That makes complete sense, I do the same. "Hi, I'm leaving a message for Mary White."

What makes me go Confused is when someone leaves a VM saying "Hello Jane Icklesberry, I'd like to make an appointment..." People don't usually go up to anyone saying "Hello Mary Farquhart, how are you? And how are you, Miranda Pumpernickel?" :o

(Names made up of course.)

WidowWadman · 10/11/2011 02:12

Ah, alright. I agree with you on that one

Jacksmania · 10/11/2011 02:14

Cool. Wine?

FloydieDoydie · 10/11/2011 02:18

Melty I frequently type accunt instead of account in work emails - thank god for " auto spellcheck before send"!

Jacksmania · 10/11/2011 02:44

Ha ha ha @ accunt - fab. Have some Wine :o

Ahem. Technically there's no correct way to transliterate Devanagari (the script used for Sanskrit and Hindi) into English, so namaste with an apostrophe is as legit as namaste without. It's possibly even preferable if you're worried people might think it's pronounced "namAYST" (as in "waste") if you don't use an apostrophe.

That being said, I have never heard of a signoff more twattish than "namaste", with or without an apostrohe - double boak!

Jacksmania · 10/11/2011 04:21

I bow to your greater knowledge Don :o

(Seriously, I didn't know that, I'm impressed. We had a fair grounding in the pronunciation of Sanskrit words when I did my yoga teacher training, but that never came up. Thank you!)

I start emails to people I don't like with 'Name'. They are not dear to me and I don't want to say 'hi'. I want to get my point across that they are morons and should bow to my every whim.

I usually sign off with 'regards' but to people I am more friendly to will put 'cheers'.

I may use Peace Out to this one schmuch of a wanker gentlemen I am dealing with who has no clue about anything. But I would be using it ironically and I doubt he'll get it.

Maisiethemorningsidecat · 10/11/2011 09:03

Exactly - you start emails to people you don't like with 'Name'

You don't (or rather, shouldn't) start emails to fellow team members with 'Name' unless they are complete dicks - which we are not. Otherwise you just sound as if you are a bossy mare with too big an ego.

Jacksmania · 10/11/2011 15:09

Which certainly applies to some people I know...

Maisiethemorningsidecat · 10/11/2011 15:16

Me too....

CogitoErgoSometimes · 10/11/2011 15:20

Mushy Peace. Any better?

Towndon · 10/11/2011 15:44

Oh... I've received emails starting "Name" before! Sad

Maisiethemorningsidecat · 10/11/2011 16:00

Ooooh - they don't like you!! Grin

Towndon · 10/11/2011 17:17

Thanks Maisie, I feel so much better now Hmm :o

Can't remember who they were from anyway - probably work-related email contacts I've never met!

Towndon · 10/11/2011 17:20

(but if anyone sends me another one I'll be ending the reply with "peace out" :o)
