To not take my DDs to tea with friend who's child has Hand, Foot and Mouth?

WWYD? I'd like to see her but it seems a bit mean to expose them. It's DD2s birthday party next week so would be a bit miserable for her if she was ill. Plus we are in the midst of major, noisy building works so having them off school is not ideal.

On the other hand I'd like to see my friend, it's a minor illness that they could come into contact with in the general scheme of things without knowing about it anyway.

Cant decide - can anyone help?

As it is highly contagious, you would be mad to go.

carabos · 09/11/2011 11:37

Hand, Foot and Mouth ???? Have you made that up?

MmeLindor. · 09/11/2011 11:38

It is very contagious, is it not? How old is your DD?

I wouldn't go.

Go to the park instead, or to a nice cafe.

Kitsilano · 09/11/2011 11:38

No I have not made it up!

Carabos, OP has not made it up! Grin There is a virus that children mainly contract (as far as I know) that is called hand, foot and mouth. It is NOT the same as the bovine Foot and Mouth!

OP, YANBU at all.

Loonytoonie · 09/11/2011 11:40

It is very contagious and you're right, she could come into contact with it anyway, but many little one's have terribly sore symptoms and it can really distress them.

I'd avoid going - you can't be sure that your DD won't catch it and suffer terrible mouth ulcers. Sad

Loonytoonie · 09/11/2011 11:42

My DD caught it after a rife epidemic in their school. She was fine, just the smallest of ulcers on her gum. Her little friend caught it and the mouth ulcer was enormous, both internally and externally. He didn't eat for days and days and poor thing was in a right state.

Don't risk it.

Mumleigh · 09/11/2011 11:43

I would postpone. My DD had it age 2 and it was horrible. She couldn't eat because of the blisters in her mouth and she got a really nasty blister on her nose which became infected and caused her lots of discomfort. It's only a lunch and I'm sure your friend won't be offended. I've heard it's so contagious that you can catch it just by standing near someone in a supermarket queue!

Carabos - My reaction was the same when I heard my friend talk about Hand Foot and Mouth. I had never heard of it either - then a week later my daughter had the same symptoms and sure enough the doctor confirmed it.

valiumredhead · 09/11/2011 11:44

You must be kidding - no way would I go!

iscream · 09/11/2011 11:45

I would reschedule the date until after her child has recovered..

Tanso · 09/11/2011 11:47

I had this two weeks ago, given to me by my toddler. It was not nice. One night of a terrible fever, then 24 hours later it felt like i had pins and needles all over my hands and feet. A day later this became spots which faded over three days. A week later the spots looked a little bit like blisters ans the skin peeled off.!

Avoid it! it was horrible.

Having said this, it is only contagious before it arrives and through the fever stage I think. By the time you have the spots the contagious phase is over

Tanso · 09/11/2011 11:50

ok, I was wrong, sorry

Kitsilano · 09/11/2011 11:56

Thanks for all the quick responses. I have a tendency to be perhaps a little precious about avoiding unnecessary illness but it looks like this time my instinct isn't over the top!

Just had this with my toddler - was a nightmare!! Ulcers all over her tongue - she wanted food and screamed when she put it in her mouth - so couldn't eat.
She has a dummy and wouldn't take out of mouth voluntarily but we had to gently remove so she would drink fluids and she screamed at the suction pull on the ulcers too.
Was difficult because it couldn't be explained to her what was wrong. My older kids had it too but not so severe and could easily cope with it.

MumblingAndBloodyRagDoll · 09/11/2011 13:35

DONT GO! My DD has had this twice and it is AWFUL! SHe wept with the pain in her mouth and could not eat ONE thing for three days. Awful!

nethunsreject · 09/11/2011 13:37

Yanbu.

Ds2 had a reasonably mild case and it was miserable for him.

Sure, they might get it at some point, but avoid where possible.

sozzledchops · 09/11/2011 14:06

Don't go, my kids had this and the baby was quite poorly. It's very contagious.

Groovee · 09/11/2011 14:09

It's not made up and it's highly contagious and very painful. Avoid.. I caught it because the mother of a baby told me the blister on his hand and foot was from him sucking on them!

porcamiseria · 09/11/2011 14:11

is this a joke! OF COURSE YOU DONT GO, NO BRAINER

aquashiv · 09/11/2011 14:14

Not to be confused with foot and mouth disease though.
I cancelled a playdate last week because of it. As it can be nasty.

Callisto · 09/11/2011 14:15

I had this as a child and I can still remember the agonising mouth ulcers I had. My mouth was literally full of ulcers and I couldn't eat a thing. Please don't expose your child to this just because you want to see your friend.

Kitsilano · 09/11/2011 15:50

Thanks everyone - I canceled!
