AIBU to think my DS's bday is more important than work?

Looking likely that I may miss some of my DS's bday beacuse of a work trip. I am likely to be arriving back from USA early morning of DS bday (a sunday, helpfully!)
we are a small team and my two colleagues who would normally be able to cover this for me will both be out of the country aswell..
What can i do? The reason for travelling at that time is fixed as in I cannot be rescheduled.

It's a birthday Hmm

I'm sure he'll have plenty more Grin

Catsdontcare · 08/11/2011 14:34

It's a shame but you're only missing some of the day not all of it. I don't know any working parent who takes time off to spend the whole day with the birthday child.

NinkyNonker · 08/11/2011 14:34

How old is he? I wouldn't miss a whole trip to avoid missing a few hours to be honest.

slavetofilofax · 08/11/2011 14:34

Get home, drink strong coffee and celebrate as you normally would.

whackamole · 08/11/2011 14:35

YABU. And silly as you will be back early that morning.

And anyway it sounds like there is nothing you can do so stop fretting about it and plan something nice for late afternoon one you have had a nap.

MMMarmite · 08/11/2011 14:35

Agree with the above :)

GypsyMoth · 08/11/2011 14:35

It's only s birthday!! Kids have to go to school on birthdays.... The world doesn't stop!

cjbartlett · 08/11/2011 14:36

your ds' birthday is not more important than work
it won't pay the bills for example

ChaosTrulyReigns · 08/11/2011 14:37

It'll be fine.

Your DS will have the double pleasure of your return and a birthday.

YABU. At least you will get to spend most of the day with him. I missed the whole of my ds's birthday due to a close relatives funeral.

cookcleanerchaufferetc · 08/11/2011 14:43

You are going to the best place to bring back a cool present or two!

travellingtime · 08/11/2011 14:53

clearly i need to have a word with myself ...
thank you all, i think its probably the thought of a childrens party combined with jet lag that is really not appealing to me, perhaps the party may have to be the following weekend...!

YABU to try and organise the whole world around being there for your child's entire birthday. Though I have to agree, the idea of a children's party combined with jetlag would probably bring on a planned illness in me Confused

If you really can't reschedule, are you flying business class? And if not, would it be worth bumping yourself up? At least that way you could get some shut-eye and not be feeling too ragged when your DS bounces all over you and emits ear-piercing shrieks of delight when unwrapping his presents Grin

MMMarmite · 08/11/2011 15:06

Having the party the following week sounds a good plan. And then you can do something more gentle on the actual day. So in fact your son wins and gets two birthdays.
