...not really Grin put im gettin desperado , my ds is 2 trying to potty train him atm , he doesn't have fully bladder control yet at night so I can't go cold turkey I ask him everytime he goes in bath room would rather dismantle it,

I once got him to sit on it infront on the tv (I know, I know) Blush he stayed on did a wee clapped him etc, but in the bathroom or kitched he wont entertain it, I'm really scared hes gonna become one of those 4 year olds still in nappies Sad

Help MN!!!

YABU

You should be using Duct Tape

thisisyesterday · 07/11/2011 20:15

he;s only 2! maybe he just isn';t ready yet

bigTillyMint · 07/11/2011 20:16

NAH. But masking tape will leave less of a mark on the potty Grin

Rollon2012 · 07/11/2011 20:18

hes 26 months I thought that was quite old for potty training.

welliesandpyjamas · 07/11/2011 20:20

YABU - wait until he is ready

IneedAbetterNickname · 07/11/2011 20:24

Sounds like he's not ready, DS1 was 35 months before he would even try sitting on the potty, then he was clean and dry within a week. Of course I had nasty comments mostly from ILs but meh! Grin

Lisatheonewhoeatsdrytoast · 07/11/2011 20:26

My DS didn't potty train until 2.8, he's still not through the night yet, but fully during the day, it's fab! Just wait another 6 months, i'd say! But YANBU Grin

auntiepicklebottom2 · 07/11/2011 20:26

he is not ready, my ds was over 3 when he was trained.

but superglue works better.

natation · 07/11/2011 20:26

There's no one method to potty training. Some children prefer the potty, some prefer the toilet, some boys are better standing, some are better sitting, even adult males seem to continue fail to hit it on target! Try experimenting. Plus some children don't ever tell you they need to wee, some show some hints, some nothing, for some it takes letting them get wet without wearing a nappy to make them go to the toilet.

PootlesBigSwingBand · 07/11/2011 21:18

I read somewhere 2.10 was the average age. My son is 2.3 and we are introducing the potty but he is nowhere near ready...happy in his nappy unfortunately.

TheLittleFriend · 07/11/2011 21:46

my dd is 25 months and when anyone mentions potty training I stick my fingers in my ears and say "la la la" loudly. I don't know about her, but I'm not ready for potty training yet!

Skillbo · 07/11/2011 21:58

You could try doing this simple little quiz...here I am pretty sure that DD (2.5) is not ready yet but thought would check as this gives you some pointers as to why they might not be ready yet..

My DM made me really cross a couple of weeks back by being so shocked that DD wasn't done and dusted yet but I know her best and know when she is ready, she'll be great at it... not helped by the fact DS is due in just over a month so can just see her regressing even if we did get it nailed before then Smile

fortifiedwithtea · 07/11/2011 21:58

Relax your DS is young and not ready. Ignore pressure from anyone who says he should be trained when.... Kids get there when they are ready.

EricNorthmansMistress · 07/11/2011 21:59

Stop stressing out over it. Mine did it in the summer at very nearly three. I tried back in spring and he wasn't ready. Then he was and it was easy.

TeWihara · 07/11/2011 22:04

My DD is 6mths older than yours and I think possibly just starting to get the idea. She definately could not have managed it 6mths ago, she wouldn't even sit on a potty and screamed whenever she saw one!

People (especially older female relatives with dodgy memories) say all sorts of silly things about how early you can potty train - and the truth is that bowel development is a physical process, if they haven't got a clue when they do a wee they're definately not going to be able to manage to tell anyone else either.

huffythethreadslayer · 07/11/2011 22:10

YANBU IF I can do the same with my dog, but obviously, I'd have to duct tape her to the front garden, as we don't have a potty and she probably wouldn't be able to use one. Basically, she just needs to know that outside is where she needs to poo and wee NOT ON MY BLARDY LAMINATE FLOORING Grin

Huffy backs away quickly as she realises, (a) that she compared her dog to a child, which is unforgiveable, (b) that she has admitted to owning a dog, which doesn't seem to be en-vogue on MN at the moment (c) confesses that she has a pooper scooper with her at all times, even though said dog doesn't seem to realise it's outside for pooing and (d) I would never condone the use of duct tape on dogs or children, unless I was really, really harrassed at the time. Finally, I also admitted to having laminate floor, which is terribly noughties of me and is a style shortcoming.

I wish you luck with your potty training OP and I'm sure that it will come, wih patience :) DD was about 2.5 and it's amazing how much difference 6 months can make in a baby's life.

Rollon2012 · 07/11/2011 22:44

Thankyou all you've eased my stress its surprising how many people appear shocked he isnt trained yet, and it makes me feel like a crappy mother but he wont entertain it ...

i think it can be cultural too, I know someone from eastern europe who was planning to train him at one. never materialised but her dc was.

I did that quiz it says 'potty potential' and maybe a few more months

Xales · 07/11/2011 23:06

Tape will lose it's sticky if he wees on it, try staples or super glue Grin

He is clearly not ready for it and he knows it. He owns his body not all the people who are shocked he hasn't yet Smile

ChristinedePizanne · 07/11/2011 23:09

When they're ready it's, ahem, a piece of piss :o

Honestly, I tried at 2 1/2 and had three weeks of despair. Gave up and then he suddenly announced that he didn't want to wear nappies any more and he was dry within a couple of days. Easy peasy

Squitten · 07/11/2011 23:24

We tried with DS1 when he was about 2.5 and it was a disaster - he became phobic of weeing anywhere, even in a nappy! Had to shelve the whole thing. We had that freak hot weekend when he was 2.10 and we let him be nappy-free in the garden with the potty dumped nearby and he just did it all by himself. In one week he was fully toilet trained and dry at night after another week - I think he had 3 wet accidents total.

When they are ready it's so so easy.

SacreLao · 07/11/2011 23:26

Sellotape is crap, it un-sticks when wet.

You need to use staples Grin

Ripeberry · 07/11/2011 23:33

What's the hurry? Leave it a few months, just see how often and for how long the nappy is dry. This will give you a better signal of when to start training.
Why make your DC and yourself stressed?
Chill! No child goes to school in a nappy (unless they have a medical condition)
