Dead trees... yep all the junk mail from various companies,
Legal and General have clicked on I am now over 50 (a bit late like as I am nearer bloody sixty and also they sent it in my maiden name . I have been married 2 years) they have sent me three ,yes three!! letters all the same in the last week asking for my custom.

Virgin, various mobile companies and lord knows how many other insurances , take away meal services, double glazing services , the list is bloody endless.

My recycle bin is full of just junk mail, I do not buy newspapers and very rarely magazines.

I am vexed beyond a fucking vexed thingAngry so all the post today that came with return envelopes has been torn up and put back into said envelope and returned .
Those without return envelopes have been put into unstamped envelopes and returned.
Hopefully they will get the message but somehow I doubt it.

Am I on a one woman campaign or do others do this?

I think I know I am overreacting but FFS ... THREE IN ONE WEEK...

OP Breathes rant over ... as you were Grin

The Mail Preference Service won't stop everything but it might help to cut down on some unsolicited mail.

Itsjustafleshwound · 07/11/2011 10:59

You need to send it back with 'YOU ARE A WINNER !!!! ' in a large envelope! Include in the letter that you have looked at decided that 'insert postcode' is a lucky street and if they reply in less than 14 days postcode 'XXX' will be lucky. Yes you MRS LEGAL and GENERAL' - if you reply within the dedline, we will send you a free gift!!

DreamsOfSteam · 07/11/2011 11:07

thanks for the link juuule have just registered for that!

fit2drop · 07/11/2011 16:25

Thanks for that link juuule

I went out after starting this thread and guess what??

I came back to another 7 items of junk mail. Angry

2 supermarket ones(Llidle and Sainsburys)
3 take-a-ways
1 avon catalogue
and one to do with lagging the loft!

Ok so the avon one is not necessarily junk mail but I am not an avon customer, I did not ask for the catalogue and I know from previous experience that when she calls to collect it and I can't find it because its probably been thrown out the avon rep is going to get quite cross with me because she has to pay for her catalogues.
Then I find myself appologising to her because she put a book through my door which I did not want, I did not ask for and Im sorry...WHY??

I have no gripe with Avon or their reps, I appreciate its an income for a lot of nice people but I still think its an assumption and an intrusion to just post through the door.
I know I could just leave the catalogue outside for the rep to collect but if I did that it would or could get wet in the rain and again I feel guilty!

I am in a right grump today.

fit2drop keep the Avon catalog looking pristine, but on all the middle pages draw images from the stick man karma sutra. The annoying junk mailer won't notice, and the next person might get something more interesting to read.

HappyCamel · 07/11/2011 16:35

YANBU.

Leave a note for the Avon rep and tell her, politely, that any future catalogues will be recycled. Mine ignored me the first time so I put the plastic envelope out with a reminder (and no catalogue). Haven't had another one.

I joined the Mail Preference Service some years ago and it works. You have to wait about a month to realise the benefit. Many companies have grasped this though and employ Royal Mail to deliver leaflets with the post. I tried to get this stopped but got a letter from Royal Mail saying that important things like election leaflets would not be delivered. After some thought, I decided not to go ahead with that because at least it was a way for Royal Mail to make money out of the unsolicited mail companies.

As for Avon catalogues, we are asked to leave them outside and I will not do that. (a) People might think I am out and come to burgle (b) it makes the front of the house look untidy. I keep them in a particular drawer so I know where they are but, if I'm out when the Avon Lady knocks at the door - tough. They are always advertising for new Avon Ladies, aren't they?

As for charity bags, I have no clothes to throw away because I wear what I have and some of my things - even myu best things - are more than 20 years old. Charity bags are the right size to line my kitchen bin. Anyway, many are delivered by commercial companies who give only a small percentage of the money they gain from donations.

Next!

fit2drop · 07/11/2011 18:12

HappyCamel there is no plastic bag with the avon book, though there is with the other bugbear...the bettaware bookConfused.
AnotherEmptyNest , yes charity bags , another thing that makes me feel guilty , same as the envelopes that contained pens from oxfam or barnardos I cannot remember which, but I just think that sending pens is a waste of well intended donations being spent on useless stuff instead of the cause it was meant for iykwim. Therefore totally missing the target because it makes me and a lot of people I know think " why bother funding pens for people who don't need them"
I do donate to charity. I have two that I always contribute towards, because I want to and because I think, and believe the money donated is well spent in the right places/ areas.

As for junk mail, pah , really pissed me off today more than usual.

Am with the Mail Preference Service but still get shite from companies I buy from. More Than seem to have finally got the message that I do not want their car insurance as well as pet insurance. Took them a mountain of junk mail and a bazillion phone calls to reach that conclusion though...
