AIBU to want a nice, plain christening gown for DS?

DS is getting christened in December when he'll be 8 months so much too big for my family gown which is very simple and traditional, having been handmade however many generations ago, and I'm a bit upset DS won't be able to wear it so I'd like to find something similar.

Can I find one? Can I feck!

They're all ruffled, lacy, smocked, generally girly and overdone.

So AIBU to want something simple or at least tasteful and where can I find it, or at least a pattern?!

Make it yourself?

pigletmania · 07/11/2011 08:44

We got one in Debenhams that was lovely, plain and understated, but timeless. John Lewis also do nice ones.

fraktious · 07/11/2011 08:50

I would snapes but I'm not a good enough seamstress to invent one IYSWIM - I need a pattern.

I wouldn't have thought of Debenhams!

This is a good pattern you will to scroll down to 5813 or This Again scroll to B4052

Both fairly plain and I think the only way to get a gown for a boy. I made ours from silk and the petticoat from my mothers wedding dress.

Good luck. I love to see a baby being Christened in a gown rather than a mini suit.

We got one when at the in-laws in Galway, Irish linen, obviously. It was nice and very simple. DS wore it first, and then DD when it was her turn.

EightiesChick · 07/11/2011 09:02

YANBU at all. I would also have said Debenhams but have just looked at their range and don't see any gowns suitable for boys, though I think this is very nice and a nearby alternative, though not what you want.

I think your best bet is to look for one of those old-school wedding and christening dress type places near you - ie a slightly grubby looking independent shop that's been there for 50 years and will probably do this stuff much better than any of the chain stores. I'd search Yell for shops like this near you.

some nice boys ones here

pigletmania · 07/11/2011 09:31

My dd one was from debenhams, look in either the wedding/occasion department or kids department.

GwennieF · 07/11/2011 09:34

I ended up getting a vintage Edwardian one on ebay. My DS and DD were only about 3 months old though but you'll still find some bigger ones.

minibmw2010 · 07/11/2011 11:18

My DS is getting baptised in Nov and will be 6.5 months. Instead of a gown I got him a smart outfit of grey trousers, little White shirt and knitted waistcoat, that way he can wear again Smile

sabrinathemiddleagedwitch · 07/11/2011 11:23

Ds had something like this

sabrinathemiddleagedwitch · 07/11/2011 11:25

this gown is borderline unisex.

lilbitneurotic · 07/11/2011 11:59

My son is wearing this one. I think it's beautiful.

IloveJudgeJudy · 07/11/2011 13:12

How about going to a dressmaker? They're not always so expensive.

glastochick · 07/11/2011 13:34

We got DS this

It was absolutely lovely, and she made it at short notice too. Even managed to wipe that bad smell under nose expression off my mother's face too Grin

Lexie1970 · 07/11/2011 13:46

I put son in linen sailor suit from John Lewis it was cream - didn't bother with hat as far too naf! Just looked on their website for christening outfit and some nice understated outfits came up if you can't find a gown that is suitable :)

trumpton · 07/11/2011 17:21

Glastochick That is lovely. It made me want to grab GS and rush to church.

lolaflores · 07/11/2011 17:26

Well, I got a beautiful, long white linen gown, with little puffed sleeves and a small ribbon running under the bust (is that right, you know like an empire line) for £7 on ebay. It was exactly what I wanted. Simple, unfussy. I then spent lots of lolly on a christening shawl, white alpaca that my sister has since used for her son. I was overjoyed with it. But god it was difficult to find. The amount of unbelivalbe over the top madness out there.

porcamiseria · 07/11/2011 17:29

this has made me laugh, as DS2 was 12 mo whenh we christended him, but he is built like a baby john prescott, sorry DS2. hence I decided against a gown as its would have looked a bit...silly, bless him

wish I has asked on here

bruffin · 07/11/2011 19:05

Glastochick It is gorgeous.

My DS wasn't christened until he was 2.5 when we had a joint christening for him and DD who was 5 months. I made DD a dress with scalloped hem and neckline, but DS wore a red waistcoat and black trousers with a white shirt.

TheCornishPickle · 07/11/2011 19:24

My ds is also being christened in December and will also be 8months! He is also too big for the family gown! I'd like a fairly understated romper style suit but all the ones I've seen look too lightweight for a cold Nothern Winter day.

I'm so busy with all the other organisational bits and pieces as well as other stuff going on at the minute I can't face the thought of getting anything made. Budget is also a serious issue. Sorry to hijack slightly but can anyone link to anything warmer and more substantial that they've seen? Good luck fraktious - have you seen anything you'll go for yet?

fraktious · 08/11/2011 10:42

I'm stalking eBay Wink and debating with DH the different gowns linked here. He's not keen on even remotely girly ones whereas I don't want anything too boyish in case we have another DC and the same happens about timing.

I'm planning to layer him up under the gown and get either a substantial romper or a smart suit-type outfit to wear for afterwards which he can wear again for Christmas.

It is worth taking a look at www.theoccasionroom.com as they have some really nice rompers which for the winter can have long sleeves although some of the photo's shown them with short ones, it is worth calling as there is always more available than what is shown on the website, they also have a lovely range of gowns that can be really simple (SL177) for the boys to a fancy (SL119) for the girls. The owner is really helpful.
