Shortening Names...

AIBU to think that Catherine is Cate or Cat shortened, and not Kate... where's the blooming K come from?

I'm a Kathryn and my name is Katy or Kat shortened, and I would be Kate if I chose to be, but not Cate or Care.

And another thing... I have a Y in my name so it's K...A...T...Y, so where does everyone who spells my name Katie get the letters from?

Am I just bitter after years of having my name wrong on everything?

Okay I know my debate is flimsy give the Cathy/Kathy thing... but really, why so many spellings of one name? Catherine, Katherine, Kathryn... do I have like the eighties version of the change a letter to make the name personalised?

Yeah, things are slow here tonight... anyway... Grin

Opporsite, I don't want her operating on me, last I heard she was teaching!

workshy · 06/11/2011 22:45

my dd is katy

she chooses to shorten it to kay why you have to shorten it when it only has 4 letters I don't know because she feels it's more grown up

I have never once had someone not in the family spell it correctly -even half of the family can't spell it right

ps my niece is Rebecca, shortened to Beccy

mrsrawlinson · 06/11/2011 22:47

We specifically chose the name for our DD (9) because it means that she can pretty much choose for herself what she's called. At the minute she's Katie at home and Kathryn at school (her choice), though I've no doubt that will probably change as she gets older. I think it's a gorgeous name, though of course I'm biased!

CheerfulYank · 06/11/2011 22:47

Well DH is Andrew called Andy, and there's no Y in Andrew. Wink And my DF is Robert called Bob and who knows where that comes from. Rob or Bert I could see...

I love Catherine for a girl, and would call her Cate if I had one.

Sirzy · 06/11/2011 22:47

People can shorten names to whatever they want. Victoria does t have a ky in it but nobody says Vicky is wrong

CheerfulYank · 06/11/2011 22:52

Also I want to have a Frederick Alexander someday, called Rex. Makes sense to me! :o

Cathycomehome · 06/11/2011 22:54

I'm Cathy (if you hadn't guessed). Full name Catherine, regularly known as Caff. I would just like to point out that in picking the laptop up just now, I accidentally spilt the last glass of wine, and I want sympathy (But when you are saying "oh dear love, that's really annoying" I will accept Cath/Kath/ Caff/ Kat or Cat, but not Katy, as that's my cousin's chosen form).

UmmOfUmbridge · 06/11/2011 22:59

skillbo are you me?
I could have and was just about to write pretty much the same post!

It's a pita, wish I'd just been called Katie on BC.

fedupofnamechanging · 06/11/2011 23:00

Vicky is wrong though. Imo it's a horrible abbreviation of a beautiful name. I was called Victoria for about a week when I was born. My mum changed it after my GPs and aunt repeatedly called my Vicky, despite being asked not to.

I think people should take their cues from the parents when children are little and from the person themselves, when grown up. It's so rude to basically change someone's name, just because their name might be long.

DD is Evangeline. Much as I like Evie, it is not my daughter's name. If I wanted her to be called Evie, I'd have put it on her birth certificate.

Apologies for rant.

Cathycomehome · 06/11/2011 23:04

You have to suck it up a bit - I THOUGHT my son would be known as Samuel...

Cathycomehome · 06/11/2011 23:06

PS I LOVE the name Evangeline - very pretty.

Pan · 06/11/2011 23:07

I much prefer, and always do, celebrate people's full names when addressing them. It's Victoria, Catherine, Maureen, Alexandra, Natalie, Evangeline Smile.

At work, as 'boss', I address people by Mr.... or Ms.... in a sort of OTT formal way for a larff, but delivered with a bit of respect.

I am really old fashioned at times...

Cathycomehome · 06/11/2011 23:13

I always think I'm in trouble if someone says "Catherine!" Son always does if someone says "Samuel!!"

I am Cathy or Cath, and he is Sam, or Sammy.

marriedinwhite · 06/11/2011 23:18

I detest shortened names. My mother in law shortens every name going, however long or short - "Lou", "Em", "Iz". DS and DD are invariably shortened. The DC both have quite short, classic names that have no spelling variants and she can't even stick to that. She once, and only once, called me Herm!

hellhasnofury · 06/11/2011 23:22

Pan but what if people hate their full given name as I do? I hate hearing my full name used I much prefer it's shortening. DD is a Cathryn who goes by the name of...Lily (figure that one out)

Towndon · 06/11/2011 23:23

YANBU

Pan · 06/11/2011 23:25

hellhasnofury, well they'd tell me and I wouldn't call it them.

was that a trick question?Smile

CheerfulYank · 06/11/2011 23:25

Mine is always Sam too Cathy. Unless there is trouble afoot, in which case he is "SAMUEL ROBERT LASTNAME!" :o

I had the opposite issue, I liked Sam but not Samuel or Samson. But I could not bring myself to put just Sam on the bc so he is Samuel.

I am Megan and have always gotten Meg, Meggie, Meggsie... :) I like it though.

Pan · 06/11/2011 23:28

yes the only person who called me by my full name was my dad. Every time, never shortened. And I quite like my name so that was really fine.

YellowDinosaur · 06/11/2011 23:29

Ds1 is Sam too CheerfulYank - like you we weren't keen on Samuel so just had Sam on the bc. I totally get haveing names you can shorten if you like but I really don't undersand why you would choose a name you don't like just so you can shorten it! Just seems a little mad imho but each to their own!!

hellhasnofury · 06/11/2011 23:29

No Pan, not a trick question. Was wondering as you said you celebrate full names. We deliberately chose a name for DD that could be shortened/deviated from as both DH and I hate our given names.

Pan · 06/11/2011 23:34

oh I was kidding re the trick question thing. I know some people don't really like their names and it's their perogative to be called exactly what they like to be. I work with someone with a five-sylable(?) first name ( forrin) which she shortens, but it's sooo tempting at times....

Pan · 06/11/2011 23:36

it helps that I wear specs for work, and it's fab to peer over them from time to time.....

CheerfulYank · 06/11/2011 23:36

Yellow I do like Samuel now, though we never use it. I don't know why I can't bear to put a "short name" on a bc, I just can't! :)

I don't think it's odd when others do, it's just a personal thing.

YellowDinosaur · 06/11/2011 23:38

Fair enough CheerfulYank - I know lots of people who feel the same as you! Good taste in names by the way Wink
