To be worried about DH working for Nissan?

My DH has been offered a skills test at Nissan for production and manufacturing, we're really happy, as his current job is really unstable. The thing is, I've heard so many horror stories about working on the production line at Nissan - I'm not really worried, more curious I suppose...Does anyone have any friends or family that work or have worked for them?

What sort of horror stories?

My DH works for Fords and I have to say they are a fantastic company to work for. My Dad worked there for 29 years and my neighbour is in his 34th year there.

As long as he isnt going into a sales room to sleep with the tarts in the admin and marketing offices your ok.

(apologies to anyone married to a salesman).

NinkyNonker · 06/11/2011 15:21

Nope, but I am a marketing 'tart'. Hmm

traininglady · 06/11/2011 15:22

Worra, I've heard that they squeeze every minute out of every hour in terms of work and that it's relentless, the line managers are bullies, you have to work overtime at no given notice, stuff like that...

Fluffy, he's not, just the production line - unless there are tarts there too?! :)

Just read this on another website...

"The worst place I have ever worked,I spent 14 years there. It is like a prison camp. The money was good ,but you will have no life.Any problems and you will work over. You will have no say in the matter. You will do the same job for years,if you make one mistake you will be taken to personal. You will be on line before you get paid (stocking up etc.) No one and I mean no one I ever spoke to was happy there.Almost all of the Supervisors started on the shop floor. So they have NO man management skills. Lots of shouting and bullying goes on.If they want you to work the weekend-You will work it ! Oh,youll love the banked hours. You have to work when its busy (summertime) then you get your time back when it suits them-(in the winter)"

Well production line work by its very nature is relentless and I would expect them to squeeze every minute out of the workers they're paying.

The overtime thing will be in the contract...though I know at Fords they're falling over themselves for any bit of overtime that comes up as it's not often these days.

I can't speak for the line managers but who have you heard all this from?

worraliberty · 06/11/2011 15:41

LMFAO and yet that person spent 14 years there Grin

I think you have to weigh it up, read between the lines and listen to people who are both happy and unhappy with the place.

Good luck to your DH whatever he decides to do.

We live in the north, so lots of friend and friends of friends, however, some who have done well and progressed within the company speak highly of it and seem to think DH will get on really well there - I hope so, I guess it's hard to stand out in amongst all of the staff that work there.
I've read a lot online about it too, I do agree re workload, it is a fast moving environment, but not sure what I make of the guy who said they have no choice re overtime..
Just interested in anyone's experiences really...

My FIL and numerous other family members on DH's side work there and other than usual moans about going to work (but who doesn't?!) have not heard anything bad about it.

Great family deals on new cars too!

Methe · 06/11/2011 15:49

My uncle designs for nissan and has done for about 25 years. Good company to work for afaik.

I did QC for BMW for a while an production line work is relentless, boring and hard but it's fairly well paid and reasonable secure.

A jobs a job!

BarbaraStanwyck · 06/11/2011 15:52

The banked hours thing is something similar at my old work. You work extra hours before the winter time so that if snows heavily and you can't get to work you still get a pay from those banked hours.

As for the guy who had nothing good to say about Nissan, well he still stayed for 14 years didn't he? Sounds like he just has an axe to grind and is bitter.

PomBearAtTheGatesOfDoom · 06/11/2011 19:36

Nissan at Sunderland is this? The people I've known who worked there fell into two camps - the ones who went to work to WORK, and got on with it, and the ones who wanted to skive and idle and be paid anyway. They have the "japanese ethos" they have very high standards, aim for 'zero defect' on the QC and expect the staff to be right behind the company all the way. It depends on the person I guess, if they want to work or want to just idle their way along...

Kayano · 06/11/2011 19:40

I'm in the north east and generally hear good things about Nissan tbh Grin

traininglady · 06/11/2011 20:35

Thank you for all of your replies, it's interesting to hear from people who know others who work there. DH would definately fall in to the work to WORK category, he's got zero sickness record and really is a grafter, I think he'll get on well there and am kind of hoping this could be a new career for him...
