I've fallen in love with this wedding dress. It fits perfectly within our budget, but my aunt says I shouldn't care about the cost on my wedding day, and certainly not walk down the ailse in polyester! She's offered to pay for something more expensive so i'll feel special on my wedding day, but i'll feel a million dollars in this!

ItsonlymeMrsDB · 06/11/2011 14:45

I also think the dress you like is lovely.

Mine cost half again what that does, and I felt a million dollars.

(I spent most of the day shivering, as I got married in December with snow, but that's by the by !)

It doesn't matter where it comes from, or what it's made of, the main thing is that you feel you look beautiful and feel wonderful.

ItsonlymeMrsDB · 06/11/2011 14:46

Oh, and comfortable, too !

Maybe take a tip from me and choose a dress best suited to the season in which you are marrying ?! Grin

worraliberty · 06/11/2011 14:51

Tell your Aunt to buy herself a going away outfit and go away! Grin

There's nothing wrong with the dress, it looks lovely.

NightFallsFast · 06/11/2011 14:52

Of course the Chinese one is made in a sweat shop, but the price includes materials, labour and postage. I would think the materials and international postage would cost at least £12, even in China.

AmaraDresden · 06/11/2011 14:53

It's lovely, I've fallen in love with one from littlewoods myself, but I already have a dress so I'm torn, as others have said go for the one you love most!

SoupDragon · 06/11/2011 15:04

The dress doesn't cost 12, that's why. Look at the listing more closely... You have to select an option. I would imagine the gloves are £12.

rhondajean · 06/11/2011 15:08

I think its lovely, I like simpler styles. Get it!

And then if you can afford a bit extra, take it to a local dressmaker and get it adjusted so that it fits you like a glove and you will look amazing.

scotsgirl23 · 06/11/2011 15:09

Certainly wouldn't be put off polyester- unless you go very expensive you will find that bridal store satin dresses are often polyester anyway. Mine is - and I got married 5 years ago and spent £800! Oh, and it washes beautifully so you don't have to spend £100+getting it cleaned afterwards.

Wear what you want to.

MsWeatherwax · 06/11/2011 15:12

Are you in Yorkshire? Recently I had lunch out and there were a couple of women having a right bitch about someone who wanted to pick her dress from Littlewoods for her wedding. They seemed quite unreasonable about it, I was fascinated as I earwigged. YANBU, wear what YOU want!

SmethWitchBelle · 06/11/2011 15:19

Those ebay ones are risky though, a friend of mine bought two for her wedding and they were rough approximations of the dress in the picture - no where near exact replicas, if fairly well made.

I like the littlewoods one very much. Go for it!

Hassled · 06/11/2011 15:21

I think it's lovely. Ignore the aunt - she's not the one getting married.

tinselmittens · 06/11/2011 15:23

The Littlewoods dress is fine, especially if you've tried it on and it fits well. They do free returns, so you could always order and try a few sizes.

Some friends have bought wedding dresses from China on ebay and I thought they looked lovely. The dresses are not as low as £12 - when you click on each listing, it will show e.g. a veil/underskirt for the lowest price; dresses are usually £60+. I have some relatives in China who inspect those factories - the conditions are hard but they are actually the same factories which produce dresses for e.g. Littlewoods or Debenhams, it is just that the UK shops have a huge markup.

StuckForWords · 06/11/2011 15:45

It's the same dress that everybody seems to wear to get married in these days, however:

It's your day, wear what you want.

I got married in something I didn't like that was basically picked by somebody else - I've always regretted that.

HeidiKat · 06/11/2011 15:54

YANBU, wear whatever you want. My wedding dress cost me £50 on ebay (not from China, a secondhand berkertex brides one) and was a perfect fit and lovely. My friend spent over a thousand pounds on hers, while it's her money to spend as she wants I don't see the point for a dress for one day, I chose to save the money for my honeymoon and have the holiday of a lifetime before starting my family.

herethereandeverywhere · 06/11/2011 15:56

Do people really do a "bride's wedding dress fabric test"on the Big Day?Confused

Surely if it's what you love and what you want to be in then it's the perfect dress?

I would say though, make sure you have seen it in the flesh and tried it on so you're absolutely sure it feels as lovely as it looks.

Good luck and best wishes Smile

FoxyRoxy · 06/11/2011 16:20

It's very pretty, YANBU for wanting to wear what you want on your wedding day!

My dress cost 1k+ but it was my dream dress and within budget so I got it. I felt amazing on my wedding day! If it had cost £300 I still would have worn it because it was my dream dress.

MigratingCoconuts · 06/11/2011 16:42

take her up on the offer!

Buy this dress, tell her its a £2,000 exact copy of the one you love and pocket the difference....

everyone's happy Wink

MissPenteuth · 06/11/2011 16:59

I had a lovely satin wedding dress. Bought from a wedding shop but was a similar price to yours, OP. It never even occurred to me to consider what it was made from.

If you like it, buy it and wear it and enjoy your wedding day :)

tethersend · 06/11/2011 17:04

I love this thread... It's like the Bridal Four Yorkshire(wo)men Grin

MissPenteuth · 06/11/2011 17:13

Grin tethers Wedding threads on here are always like that.

whatdoiknowanyway · 06/11/2011 17:21

My cousin got her wedding dress from a charity shop. So second hand satin polyester. She looked absolutely beautiful and her wedding was one of the best I have ever been to.
£350 is NOT cheap. Ignore your aunt and do what you want.

Trills · 06/11/2011 17:29

YANBU - get the dress you want - what has your aunt got to do with it anyway?

HappyHippyChick · 06/11/2011 17:41

Try the dress on, see how it feels and looks and if you feel the same way buy it. As everyone has said, if you find a dress you love (and that loves you too IYKWIM), then you would be unreasonable to consider anything else (IMHO). I spent a similar amount on my dress (12 years ago) and felt great, my best mate spent nearly 3k a couple of years later and also felt amazing. Everyone is different. Have a fab day!

Hardgoing · 06/11/2011 17:53

I wore a dress from Monsoon, I loved it because it was really simple and all the expensive ones seemed 'too much' for me, it was classy and elegant and I can honestly say I still love it more than any other dress I ever saw at a wedding (perhaps this is like thinking your child is more beautiful than every other child only about dresses!)

My dress and cover was about 150 pounds and I felt a million dollars. Go with the dress you love, I think it's beautiful.

PomBearAtTheGatesOfDoom · 06/11/2011 20:17

I've had three weddings, the first one was wearing a huge meringue of satin and I looked like a bloody galleon in full sail and it was fucking hideous, and cost several hundred pounds to hire, then on the day they sent the wrong dress and admitted eventually after a hysterical phone call that the bride from the previous week who hired my dress had spilled red wine on it and put her heel through it and ruined it. Second time round I wore a dress from Littlewoods Grin, it was black velvet, fitted, with big brassy buttons down the front and was just an ordinary going out dress and cost me about £40.
Third time lucky and I wore a Holy Clothing dress I bought on eBay Grin
You wear the dress YOU want and everyone else be buggered!
