do you think it is ok to do washing this time of the night

OP posts:
ZillionChocolate · 02/11/2011 22:09

Depends on your house, your neighbours and the type of wash and length of cycle.

ouryve · 02/11/2011 22:12

Depends how soundproof your walls are. My dryer's chugging away at the moment. I try not to spin after my kids go to bed, but I know that no one else who could possibly hear it (ie next door on the kitchen side of our house) has anyone in the house go to bed in the back room adjoining our house before about 10pm, anyhow, so I will do washing at this time of night in an emergency (ie poo or puke)

LynetteScavo · 02/11/2011 22:13

Where I live, yes.

I once lived somewhere where you were only expected to mow your lawn on Sunday mornings, or bank holidays.

cruelladepoppins · 02/11/2011 22:14

Do you mean if it disturbs another household? We-e-e-e-ll, that depends on how much it disturbs them. I don't object to just hearing someone else's machine dweebling away in the background if I'm in the kitchen, but I prob would be hacked off if it was above my bedroom and loud enough to wake me up. I think 10 o'clock is probably pushing it.

I was liquidising soup at 7.30 a.m. this morning, mind you ... the neighbours are half a mile away but it annoyed the life out of DH.

Whoops I always put my washine machine on, didn't even think about it.

Quite often at 2am as well Blush

My neighbours seem to stone deaf however.

I hoovered the landing at midnight once (light bulb smashed, several shards of glass stuck in carpet, DD goes toilet in night) so it really couldn't wait until morning.

Melindaaa · 02/11/2011 22:19

We live in a detached house so the washing machine, dishwasher and tumble drier are on half the night. We have usually had the Hoover on by 7am clearing up bits of toast and cereal that my babies throw around the room.

Not sure how we would manage if we were attached to other people. I guess between 8am and 7pm weekdays, and 9am weekends is reasonable?

nailak · 02/11/2011 22:21

Sometimes you have no choice but to Hoover in night due to accidents etc

troisgarcons · 02/11/2011 22:22

Bizarre

Red2011 · 02/11/2011 22:24

We're in a block of maisonettes with concrete walls and floors which do a wonderful job of transmitting noise. I run the washing machine fairly late (up to 10pm) as it is in the kitchen, which is furthest away from next door, and above downstairs' kitchen. Hoovering seldom gets done anyway, but unless it is urgent then it's before 7.30pm (as that's DDs bedtime, after which it's adult dinners, wash dishes, and do my homework).

If it is something noisy that is being done then I'd stick to post 8am, and pre 7pm, possibly an hour later start/end time on weekends.

lechatnoir · 02/11/2011 22:24

Assuming you've got near neighbours, I'd say 9:30 latest 10pm - 9am for loud noises like hoovering, music, piano playing etc but wouldn't think a washing machine/dishwasher in the kitchen would disturb a neighbour sleeping as I'd say it would be pretty unlikely for a bedroom to adjoining a kitchen wouldn't it?

lechatnoir · 02/11/2011 22:29

eta my parents have just had a home safety assessment following a rather scary fridge fire and the fire brigade urged them not to use appliances at night or when they were out

FoxyRoxy · 02/11/2011 23:03

Probably not 5am which is when my upstairs neighbours in my old apartment chose to vacum...

The rule here is midnight, though the man across the hall from us has his tv so loud I can hear what's going on!

WibblyBibble · 02/11/2011 23:39

Had a neighbour when I was in a middle flat (they were in top) who used to put the washing machine on at fucking 1am. I was almost homicidal with rage. If you're in ground floor or a house you're probably less disruptive, but spin cycles can be loud and remember lots of people have to get up for work before 7 (my neighbours in this case didn't seem to realise that people got up for work at all).

redwineformethanks · 03/11/2011 00:04

I'd say you should be quiet from 10.30pm - 7.30am. Depends a bit on the layout of the house and how close your neighbours are

I always do my hot washes at night on the cheaper lecky, but I'm lucky as I'm semi-detached.

Iggly · 03/11/2011 08:11

I think electricity is only cheaper at night if you have a certain tariff?

lech the problem with that advice is that it was a fridge which is on all the time?

I use the washing machine after 8am and before 7pm in the week, after 9 at the weekend.

My neighbours are too nice to complain about the noise (I think) so I try not to annoy them.

Best for all concerned to buy nice quiet machines!

beanbasher · 29/12/2013 13:53

Good afternoon all. I agree it depends on your property type. Detached property fire away. I live in semi detached flat. Just downstairs then me and a house attached at one side. For me and my nieghbour attached to the side off us we hear and feel my downstairs nieghbours washine machine nealry everynight between half 12 and 3 am. I no living in flat is unavoidable with noise but surly putting a washing machine on at these hours is the wrong hours? My bed turns into a huge vibrating plate for a hour or 2 every night. Every morning i Wake up i have lost another 2 pound, there will be nothing left off me if my ds nieghbours doesnt stop this :-P
