to think that BBC Radio 1 shouldn't encourage the binge drinking culture?

On Sunday morning the DJ was asking people to call in to give a score out of 10 of how rough you were feeling and there's me tutting and disapproving. Of course it's been going on for years with hungover DJ's but it's so boring and so negative.
Wouldn't it be altogether more positive if you could call in and say how great you were feeling, or call in if you're outdoors on a sunday morning and what you're up to.

hurrumph. [old biddy emoticon]

and yes i can switch it over, i did.

Vernon Kaye ??

It irritates me primarily because I am never hung over because I never go out and am therefore a bit jealous of these wee young 'uns who can go out and get smashed and not have to get up at stupid o'clock the next morning to look after noisy dc's Envy

nevergoogle · 02/11/2011 21:20

no, i don't think it was vernon kaye.
it irritates me most because the target audience of radio 1 is mostly under 18.

Vernon does Saturdays.

Not defending them if they're encouraging crap behaviour, but I think they state their target age group as 15-35, so mostly well over 18.

bushymcbush · 02/11/2011 21:35

I think that's totally irresponsible of them.

nevergoogle · 02/11/2011 21:37

35 really?

OP posts:
MrsBloomingTroll · 02/11/2011 21:40

I didn't hear that on Sunday, but I have heard recent Saturday/Sunday morning phone ins regarding what sport listeners are participating in that day, because Vernon was off to play American football, some final or other.

Most of their listeners are older than their target group anyway, aren't they? like me

MrsBloomingTroll · 02/11/2011 21:42

Haven't Radio 1 had problems because their public broadcasting remit is to target "young people" but most people who listen are older. Which is why they keep doing so many things aimed at teenagers.

When in fact many listeners are housewives like me

ShellyBoobs · 02/11/2011 21:43

35 really?

It may have changed recently but I know that's why the controller (Andy Parfitt) left. Apparently he was under a lot of pressure to get the average age of listeners down from 30 (!) where it had been for some time.

They variously list the target audience as 15-35, 15-29, etc, but Radio 2's official target is 35+ and the BBC is supposed to provide national radio for all youth/adult age groups.

MrsBloomingTroll · 02/11/2011 21:46

But I'm not ready for Radio 2 yet!!!! I'm still young, me!

IveGotTightsOlderThanYouLove · 02/11/2011 21:52

YABU.

Listening to the programme's about fun and escapism (let's face it, usually from a hangover for most young people on Sunday morning). They don't want to hear about someone windsurfing.

Radio 1 is very squeeky clean. I'm glad that they at least acknowledge that hangovers happen!

Xmasbaby11 · 02/11/2011 21:53

I know lots of thirtysomethings who listen to radio 1 and enjoy a night out drinking (even ones with kids - admittedly not as often, so I think the target audience is reasonable.

I'm with you, MrsB! Grin

I've got a year left of Radio 1. I do like listening to Scott Mills and small doses of Chris Moyles.

IveGotTightsOlderThanYouLove · 02/11/2011 21:54

The target age group of 15-35 doesn't surprise me.

Xmasbaby11 · 02/11/2011 21:54

I don't think they encourage drinking, anyway. you listen to whatever radio station you relate to.

I complained via their online form one time when Scott mills was standing in on the breakfast show. He told a totally inappropriate joke involving a cucumber and chocolate sauce. Inappropriate in my view as my then 4 yr old DS asked what the joke was. I was told I was outside their target age range and shouldn't be listening anyway! I was 34.

I've since switched to Radio 2 and co-incidentally was asked to participate in the MORI polls and will not under any circumstances give Scott mills any listener figures.

Sorry for the hijack OP.

Panzee · 02/11/2011 21:59

Oh I wouldn't listen to Scott in front of the kids! :o

IveGotTightsOlderThanYouLove · 02/11/2011 22:01

In its defense, it's not designed for four year olds.

ShellyBoobs · 02/11/2011 22:02

Oh I wouldn't listen to Scott in front of the kids!

Yes, probably not ideal for the little ones. Grin

I used to love his 'badly bleeped TV' segment. It got banned, though. Sad

coastgirl · 02/11/2011 22:05

I was once trying to be nice to a class of year 10s and let them put the radio on during a lesson (never again!) and when I suggested Radio 1 they all said "but that's for old people!". They wanted Galaxy (deep sigh).

SquirtedPerfumeUpNoseInBoots · 02/11/2011 22:06

No, and neither would I (then). but in my defence, we were in the car, the radio tuned already because Chris moyles is funny without being crude, and Scott was standing in.

If you can't trust a breakfast presenter in front of the kids, he should be on after midnight when they are asleep.

IveGotTightsOlderThanYouLove · 02/11/2011 22:10

On after midnight?? A rude joke about a cucumber that was allowed on Radio 1? You're being slightly hysterical, I think. It's risque and is designed for 15 - 35 year olds.

redpanda13 · 02/11/2011 22:11

My 61 year old mother listens to Radio 1. Mind you she does like a gin or two. She regularly complains when I drag her out to the stables on a Sunday morning. Was it Edith Bowman?
