to be completely bewildered by my DS's school report?

OK, so my DS started at a new school this term. We live overseas but it is a British school and therefore they follow the National Curriculum. So, his report has all the subjects listed, then 3 columns: End of Year Expected Level, End of Year Target and Current. For example, for 'English Writing', he has got the following:

End of Year Expected Level: Low 2C
End of Year Target High 1A
Current: Low 1B.

WTF does it mean?!? I consider myself a bright person generally, but I just can't work it out. I would really appreciate some advice. Thanks.

What did it say on his report about these?

Nothing. It's just a graph.

nearly finished the New Way reading series and he was doing Year 3 maths with me at home last year.

Either(or some combination):

They haven't tested him and the grades are guesses.

The overlap of what he learnt at home and what they tested at school is small. But as he goes up through the years it'll increase and there'll be times when he steams ahead.

The teacher has intentionally been conservative with the grading to make the improvement over the year look better.

He's settling in, not quite comfortable with the school environment yet. If he was tested, maybe didn't do that well in the test as it's a new experience for him, but this will improve over time.

Target it where they expect average children to be at the end or the year/key stage.

Expected level is where YOUR child will be working at if he continues to progress at the pace he is at the moment.
