first time on aibu Grin

I went into tkmaxx today and spotted a lovely winter cost for £60. after trying it on i decided to go for a medium size, however on checking the label noticed the medium size was priced at £70, same jacket, same style, made by same brand, same colour infact, only difference was the size.

Puzzled i took it to the till to clarify the price, thinking it must ave been a mistake, cashier explains that the prices are indeed correct, how come ? Her explanation is that they get their stock from various suppliers, so even though its the same jacket, the price is reflecting supplier charges. Shock

I requested for the manager just to make sure i was hearing correctly, and she reiterated what the cashier said infact she added "you can look all round the store, you will find lots of identical items with different prices on them!"

Unfortunately they only had one medium size and that was the one costing an extra £10, so i left empty handed Angry

Now ive been shopping at tkmaxx for a while now and NEVER knew they did this.

AIBU to think 2 identical items by the same manufacturer should be the same price ? I can understand sometimes more is charged for a larger size, but this is not the case here at all this is simply because it was stocked by a different supplier, a whole £10 extra for the same jacket ? How have they got with this ?

Tkmaxx is a discount store selling end of line stuff from many suppliers.
Most other stores get their stock from a single supplier, hence one price.

I've seen identical items on sale at different prices in different branches. Their store, their choice - take it or leave it.

I'm more annoyed about their short refund policy but again, it's up to them.

YABU

They have two items. Once, they say "you can have this if you give us £60", the other, they say "you can have this if you give us £70".

If you want the one they are asking £70 for, you have to give them £70. If you don't want it, don't buy it.

You are not forced to shop there op - and it works the other way too. You can get some cracking bargains in one aisle and then find them even cheaper in the next!

SoupDragon · 02/11/2011 22:20

You clearly don't understand. The reason no other stores have this "problem" is because of the way they acquire stock.

I had no idea they did it either. However I do understand the reasoning behind it and why it is the case.

I bought a suitcase from tkmaxx and when I got it home found it was faulty, so took it back. They had an identical suitcase for sale but wouldn't let me exchange it because the one in store was priced more. It was ridiculous because had I returned it without the receipt they would have had to exchange it as it was faulty. The manager was really unhelpful. I still like shopping there for bargains though.

That's the way Tkmaxx works, nokissymum. They buy a few end-of-the-line items from lots of different suppliers, and then sell them on.It's a discount shop, that's how they do business.Other discount stores do the same thing. It's how they can offer some things relatively cheap.

Other shops buy huge quantities of an item from a single supplier, and price all of those things the same.

soupdragon thank you, the main crunch of this i now see is that other stores only ever use one supplier, that i didnt know. So its not tkmaxx being greedy they just dont have anyother choice.

I really do love tkmaxx but never spotted their strange pricing, well now i can spend even longer in there, checking all the prices carefully of course.

Thank you.
