WIBU to give dd orange squash?

Ok, DH and I have been at loggerheads about this all day and I'd like to canvas general opinion on the matter. It's definitely not the end of the world and, no, it's not the most important thing we've got to worry about! Grin

This morning I was rushing around getting dc's ready for nursery, Dd (2.5) was thirsty, and I gave her a cup of orange squash (nice Hi-juice stuff!). Dh came down and started mumping about it "not being right", having orange squash at 8 in the morning Hmm - just after breakfast. I can't really get why not, particularly since there's no ban on it at any other mealtime. I usually offer water or squash, she normally asks for water, but today she went for the squash. Cue 12 hours of stewing about it from both of us, with no sign of either backing down Grin.

Go on, who was BU?

I don't think it's the end of the world, but water is obviously better teeth wise...

Sossiges · 01/11/2011 19:56

He is, it's orange squash ffs not poison

MangoMonster · 01/11/2011 19:57

YANBU.

usualsuspect · 01/11/2011 19:59

He is

tell him to get a grip

IneedAbetterNickname · 01/11/2011 19:59

Ask if he'd rather you gave her whisky! Grin YANBU!!

auntiepicklebottom2 · 01/11/2011 20:00

yabu given her orange squash....but that only because i don't like the taste :)

squeakytoy · 01/11/2011 20:01

is orange juice not a standard breakfast drink... so diluted squash is no different really...

pozzled · 01/11/2011 20:02

YANBU. If he had a real issue with it and didn't want to give her squash ever then I'd understand to a certain extent, but if he's ok with it at other times then he's just being silly.

Chundle · 01/11/2011 20:02

I give mine squash occasionally but only when we don't have pure orange juice/apple juice.

JockTamsonsBairns · 01/11/2011 20:03

I just don't get the whole over-reaction really. The dc's have a fairly healthy and balanced diet overall, but neither of us are the type of parents to ban the odd sugary thing here and there. I mean, he gives her orange squash at lunchtime. Why is that ok, and it's not ok in the morning? He can't answer this, other than saying "it's just not right" Hmm

My two only drink juice, squash or milk, they wont drink water at all. But i formula fed them anyway so they have already had a gut full of rat poison with no ill effects Grin

squeakytoy · 01/11/2011 20:04

Tell him he is being a prat. It is no different than watered down pure juice really... would he rather she have a cup of tea?

GwendolineMaryLacey · 01/11/2011 20:04

No problem at all, can't see what the fuss is about.

JockTamsonsBairns · 01/11/2011 20:05

Is squash worse for your teeth in the morning or something? I'm not a dentist, nor am I super nutritionally knowledgeable, so I might be missing something.

JockTamsonsBairns · 01/11/2011 20:06

Babydubs - this Dd was formula fed too, so done the guilt thing with that too Grin

squeakytoy · 01/11/2011 20:07

No different for your teeth in a morning than it would be at lunchtime.

usualsuspect · 01/11/2011 20:07

My teenage ds often drinks a pintglass of squash in the morning

hellhasnofury · 01/11/2011 20:07

Has he got the bizarre idea that orange squash somehow curdles in the stomach if you've already had milk? (I work with a very clever adult who is convinced this is a fact).

MangoMonster · 01/11/2011 20:08

Ask him again... Seems silly to me but he might have his reasons...

Smokedsalmonbagel · 01/11/2011 20:08

Sorry to say we have a no squash rule at breakfast! Probably makes me sound a bit daft. Its milk or water at breakfast.

I think my reason was when DS1 first discovered squash he wanted it all the time and this seemed a good reason not to have it at breakfast.

I would never drink squash at breakfast, doesn't seem right!

For some reason I feel bad agreeing with your DH!

usualsuspect · 01/11/2011 20:09

yes, go and ask him why ,we need to know his reasons so we can judge him understand

JockTamsonsBairns · 01/11/2011 20:10

For information purposes, it was Aldi's Hi Juice - 50% pure juice, with added Vitamin C to boot. Ok, sugar in there too, but it was one small well diluted cup ffs.
Can't believe the frosty atmosphere has raged on all day about this!

OP posts:
JellyMould · 01/11/2011 20:12

I would also never drink squash at breakfast and it wouldn't have been allowed when I was growing up! To be honest I try to avoid DS having it at breakfast - don't offer it. However I'm not really sure why.

MumblingAndBloodyRagDoll · 01/11/2011 20:12

We used to offer it around once or twice a day...DD is 7 now and has had 2 fillings which as she hardly eats sweets, has been blamed on the juice. No need for it at all...Dentist has advised only rarely and always with a meal.

JockTamsonsBairns · 01/11/2011 20:13

Thanks for all the replies by the way
