Clearly I've been missing a trick!

My dd has a dumbo comforter she adores and won't go to sleep without it. As you can imagine it often needs washing so thought I would get a spare. Not in shops anymore.

Looked on ebay and it is selling for :£25 used! It cost less than 5 new.

How I wish I had bought another!

I've just had a look on eBay , it's a bloody good Money maker

HitTheRoadJack · 01/11/2011 15:17

Comforters? Little blanket things with teddies attached to them or are you using the word the American way and referring to dummies?

On eBay the only ones I can see that are money makers are the Disney ones.

BlueAndBrown · 01/11/2011 15:19

Ours were about 2.5 yrs old when we sold them, only been used for about 2 weeks though then put away. I guess someone somewhere had a 2 year old who had left theirs at playgroup or something and was desperate enough to pay lots.

I think the idea is to buy comforters, store them away for at least 12 -18 months, then sell them off. You need to wait long enough for them to have disappeared from shops and sales. After making loads on our pair I was very tempted to start doing it!

FreddieMercurysBolero · 01/11/2011 15:22

Can you start another thread with the name of the of the comforter in the title? I bet a lovely MNer has a spare... I was desperate for a spare of DS's cow, and a lovely MNer sent me a spare one, free of charge.

HitTheRoadJack · 01/11/2011 15:22

I still don't get what it is you're all doing.

Those little blankets?

BlueAndBrown · 01/11/2011 15:27

HitTheRoad Mine were a bit like this one but cream.

DejaWho · 01/11/2011 15:27

See this is one I'm wise to (having lost my beloved childhood teddy one day leading to a through-the-night-knit-fest for mum to make me another one)... I'm buying ten of the buggers!

Glitterkitten · 01/11/2011 15:31

splashy - you can have mine (dd's!). free of charge. PM me if you want it.

BlueAndBrown · 01/11/2011 15:31

Deja You do right!!

Selling them on ebay is the luck of the draw. There has to be at least 2 or 3 parents who are desperate enough to pay over the odds for it at the time that you list yours. A comforter like ours went a week later (I had set up an alert before we sold to see if they were worth listing) and it went for only about £3.

HitTheRoadJack · 01/11/2011 15:31

WHy are they going for so much? How odd. I have like 8 of these my son had no interest in them. Didn't occur to me to sell them, I have them upstairs.

BlueAndBrown · 01/11/2011 15:34

HitTheRoad Because if your baby WON'T sleep without them but they lose it, then £20 is cheap for a decent nights sleep!

Get yours on ebay!

HitTheRoadJack · 01/11/2011 15:36

Yes I think I shall. Hadn't even considered this before! Good thinking!

BlueAndBrown · 01/11/2011 15:39

Mine never took to them either, hence selling them when I had a clear out. I know from friends though that some babies/toddlers are inseperable from their comforters.

Mine both have a teddy they have for bed and they'd be distraught to lose them. They aren't allowed out of the bedroom though so hope we'll never lose them, still have spares though for washing.

thefirstMrsDeVeerie · 01/11/2011 15:42

I was lucky with DC4. He is the only one of my five that bothered with any blankies etc. He would accept any cellular blanket. He didnt care what colour or size.

If I couldnt find one of the moses basket size ones he would end up taking a cot bed one to nursery. Then eventually hinted at health and safety issues so I stocked up on little ones Grin

I miss his blankie stage now he is all grown up and nearly four Sad

Moominsarescary · 01/11/2011 15:46

Ds 3 loves his blue Ellie one , my niece has the pink one and there is no way would she sleep without it. It goes everywhere with her

larry5 · 01/11/2011 15:48

My elder ds had a flannelette cot sheet he took everywhere which at least I could was. When ds2 came along I gave him his old vests to hold which worked very well until he was about 18 months when he realised that he wore vests that felt the same so wandered around holding onto his vest and sucking his thumb. He got very cold sometimes!

DS is 6 and still has his "cloth" ie muslin. I figured that we would probably lose any other comforter option! Only the oldest softest ones will do though

HitTheRoadJack · 01/11/2011 15:51

Haka I asked that. There's a link up a bit.

LeNameChange · 01/11/2011 15:56

I'd happily pay serious cash for another John Lewis dog which someone bought for my DS (4) when he was born. I live in fear of losing that thing, but cannot find one for love nor money.

MrsBloomingTroll · 01/11/2011 16:04

Arse!

OP, I've just returned from a thorough rummage through my DD's toy box, boxes in the loft, anywhere I could think to look, but I cannot find her old Dumbo comforter anywhere! We were given it by a friend an she didn't take to it, was almost brand new. I think it must have gone to a charity shop when we moved house or I may have even passed it on to someone else Sad.

So sorry, thought I was going to solve this for you. But if I've read this and had one, hopefully someone else will too.

splashymcsplash · 01/11/2011 19:56

glitterkitten thank you so much for the offer, I am PMing you. Really didn't expect that anyone would offer it, just started this thread to have a little moan :)

Haka A comforter is a little blanket with a little stuffed toy attached.

MrsBloomingTroll thanks for looking :)
