YABU. Honestly, people need to get over this kind of thinking.

tooearlymustdache · 01/11/2011 09:27

the PPs who are poo-pooing (arf) the idea obviously haven't been on the same buses i've been on recently. some people are revolting!

i'll join your campaign, OP, and add the issue of hairbrushes to your manifesto.

Nice big pair of Marigolds should do it.

YABU.

Genuine question -- we all know how overuse of antibiotics has led to more resistant bacteria. Won't using hand sanitizer do the same thing? I have seriously always wondered this.

duvetdayplease · 01/11/2011 09:36

If you're going into hospital, the germs you wanna worry about are mostly inside, not on the bus. And taxis are no cleaner. The world is a dirty dirty place my friends. This is why I have given up on cleaning the kitchen...
I saw a kid tough an apple - an apple - that had fallen from a beautifully-tended National Trust apple tree on Saturday. Her mum ran after her and squirted hand gel on her. What an idiot.

Is there something special about Christmas germs? Hmm

That's how tinsel is made, isn't it?

SarahStratton · 01/11/2011 09:46

I prefer sneezing glitter, it doesn't get tangled in my sinuses.

TheVermiciousKnid · 01/11/2011 09:49

I assume glitter is made from the, umm, finer snot, whereas tinsel is made from the 'rivers of snot' type snot?

MenopausalHaze · 01/11/2011 09:50

People really think like this? How awful to be so obsessed! Actually yes, they do think like this - I know a girl who wouldn't put an empty coffee cup in the bin because she'd have had to lift the lid without the aid of a flame thrower, a bottle of dettol and two paramedics on standby. Grin Surely that's no way to live your life?

BertieBotts · 01/11/2011 09:57

Hahaha. Am currently on a bus on my way to uni. When you have about 70 people in a small, confined space with someone coughing and sneezing every few seconds, I think its the airborne germs you need to worry about, not the bits of seats etc everyone is touching.

ChuffMuffin · 01/11/2011 09:58

YABU!

I will however agree with you completely in the case of Virgin Trains' toilets. Dear god. If they had a hole in the carriage floor for you to wee through it would be more hygenic.

Stay123 · 01/11/2011 10:00

Take your own by all means but don't force your own neurosis on everyone else

Towndon · 01/11/2011 10:45

YABU. Why are there ever any alive people on the bus? Because we have immune systems.

WhereYouLeftIt · 01/11/2011 10:48

YABU. If you think it is a problem for your personally, then carry some wetwipes/sanitiser in the pocket of your winter coat.

Ephiny · 01/11/2011 10:50

I always wash my hands when I get to work/home after being on public transport. But it never occurred to me that hand sanitisers should be provided!

I didn't think those anti-bacterial gels were much use against viruses anyway (and it's mostly viruses you want to worry about - colds, flu, stomach bugs at this time of year). The best way is to wash your hands properly with soap and water, and avoid touching your mouth/nose/eyes unnecessarily.

This won't fully protect you from airborne viruses (I don't think it's been shown to protect much against the flu, for example) but it helps to some extent.

Pendeen · 01/11/2011 10:52

What's public transport?

:o

DodieSmith · 01/11/2011 10:59

YABU

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 01/11/2011 11:01

yes, and do you wear a surgical mask to go on the bus too?

somewherewest · 01/11/2011 11:07

I don't wash my hands after using public transport. Haven't died yet. But then my grandad's take on food that had just hit the floor was "Its lost nothing whatever it gained". He's in his 80s and fitter than I am.

"What's public transport?"

I believe it's wht the common people use when their driver has a day off.

omnishambles · 01/11/2011 11:28

I see your Virgin Trains chuffmuffin and I raise you a First great Western - seriously every bloody time we get on one (doesnt matter if its West Country or Cardiff) one of us gets ill and normally we're very resistant. Grimmo.
