Whilst travelling about this week-end I have see 3 houses with Christmas decorations up - 1 with the windows trimmed with sparkly gardlands and lights and 2 with their outside lights/figures lit up - what is this about ??

YANBU. I hate the way it takes over the last three months of the year, I can barely be arsed with it by the time it comes around.

benandhollyandgaston · 31/10/2011 12:05

Fools?

Live and let live I say, they're not harming you are they? They can decorate their homes however they wish.

My old neighbour used to have her decorations up from now as she was disabled and couldn't do it herself so had to wait for one of her sons 4 monthly visits for him to do it.

IndieSkies · 31/10/2011 12:06

If they were garlands they may well have been Diwali lights.
Diwali was last weeek, with many family celebrations taking place over the weekend.
Diwali is the festival of light. Lights on houses and in windows v common. Possible that they are not the fools??

AFuckingKnackeredWoman · 31/10/2011 12:06

I drove past a house with all the outside house decorations up and on. There were snowmen, santas and light everywhere.

Now i'm all for Christmas, I've started shopping and wrapping but no decorations till December

Bonkers

worraliberty · 31/10/2011 12:06

They were probably Diwali decorations.

bintofbohemia · 31/10/2011 12:08

I've seen Christmas (not Diwali!) decorations up already...

LaurieFairyCake · 31/10/2011 12:09

It could be like my friends house - her daughter has cancer and this will be her last Christmas.

Or it could be they're going abroad and having a 'Christmas' here?

I've seen one decorated in a really scabby area near me and the snowman was falling down and had lichen all over him - clearly last years still up Grin

YABU. A house round here had their decs up last year in beginning of November. After being slated on the radio and papers, the family were very very upset.

It turned out the husband of the family was a soldier in Afghanistan who was on leave. The family wanted Christmas early as he would be away for the actual festive period, so that he could spend time with all his family and friends. They had a turkey dinner/pressies etc, because he has spent the last few years away at Christmas and his kids never get a chance to see him. I found out lately that this is common in some families with people in the forces/merchant navy/oilrigs etc

My DH is a nurse and is working Xmas Eve, Xmas Day and Boxing day, so we are having Xmas early too.Ours is on the 23rd. :)

It's not always saddos that do it,even if it was, does it matter?

VivaLeBeaver · 31/10/2011 12:33

I bought dd a stick on Xmas tree for her window and she's stuck it on already. She's a fool so maybe you're right. Grin

DizzyDummy · 31/10/2011 12:37

I wouldn't 'diss' someone for having the decorations up so early but do wonder if it takes the excitement out of it for them a bit? I love putting ours up around 2 weeks before Christmas and although I love them, I am ready to take them down on New Years Day. However, having decorations all over the house would cover up the clutter and dust (and maybe a couple of the dogs) so maybe there is a logic in there somewhere....

DejaWho · 31/10/2011 12:37

I've finished my shopping - but that's my coping strategy to avoid the shops for the entirety of November and December.

I await the arrival of one of our neighbour's 6 foot inflatable Homer Simpson with a santa hat - it usually surfaces by mid-November.

IslaValargeone · 31/10/2011 12:42

Well after reading some of the reasons (some incredibly moving) why people may put decorations up early, I would imagine you feel suitably chastised.
I personally couldn't give a stuff what other people do, and if it spreads a little happiness, more power to them I say.

Rhubarbgarden · 31/10/2011 12:42

Not necessarily fools but I would definitely question their taste.

AlmaMartyr · 31/10/2011 12:48

A friend has decorations up because her DH is going to be away for Christmas. Some of our neighbours put their decorations up early and I love seeing them up, they make me smile.

otisreading · 31/10/2011 12:48

Maybe a terminally ill child or adult lived in one of the houses. Last Christmas memories.

LiegeAndLief · 31/10/2011 12:52

There is a house in the next road to us which always does a massive Christmas light display, starting in November. I drove past at the weekend and they were putting all the lights up. The house opposite had a "sold" sign up and there were three people stood in the garden with their arms folded and mouths open Grin.

mollymole · 31/10/2011 13:00

I didn't think Diwali lights consisted of Reindeers pulling sleighs and Father Christmas figures - so no I don't think it is Diwali lights

This is my favourite kind of AIBU thread - one where the OP only responds to comments they can contradict, and not to any of the valid arguments Grin

5Foot5 · 31/10/2011 17:08

I would have said YANBU - until I read some of the explanations on here. I love Christmas but get quite irritated when shops and TV start to insist Christmas is upon us while we are still in October.

This weekend I was aghast when driving past a very large, expensive looking house in the "posh" village near us to see that they had some extremely extravagant decorations up which I took to be Christmas lights. However, having read some of the posts on here I am now wondering whether that was indeed Diwali celebration.
