Arghhh

I do not want to have any more children (DSD is 16, DS is 12 and DD is almost 2) and can see no real reason why I should continue to have a period every month (I am 38) but all the permanent solutions to stop this nightmare each month seem so drastic and come with their own problems!

  1. The pill - back to back, ok I know I could take the combination pill and take it back to back... but: a) I am overweight (I am trying to lose it) and b) I don't like taking chemicals and with my asthma and allergies I feel I am already dosed up!

  2. hysterectomy - too drastic! again, need for HRT etc...

  3. Coil - knowing my luck I would still bleed like a pig!

I am fed up having to change a super plus tampon every 1-2 hours Min, of having to basically wear a nappy at night (sexy! not) and the cost of this is ridiculous! I am fed up of the sugar cravings [hbiscuit] just before and of being like the wicked witch of the west too....[henvy]

Perhaps its time that science found a way of sharing this burden with men??

AIBU to say I bloody hate being a woman for about 2 weeks of a month!!! [hangry]

Have you had any investigations to find out why your periods are so excessively heavy? Periods arenever pleasant but yours sound particulary nasty. I've had the implant since giving birth to DD and haven't had a period in 15 months, it's bliss.

oldraver · 31/10/2011 10:08

One word... Mooncup. Try it if you dont like the cost and continual changing of SanPro.

As for the other things, I think thye are preferable to artificial hormones or not having periods. I have PCOS and didnt have any for years and didnt like how I felt, so periods to me are far preferable.

I understand for some people their periods are very heavy/painfull and yes other treatment is needed. Do you think they are heavier than is considered 'normal' ? A Mooncup would tell you if you at the 'needs looking into' stage of heaviness

oldraver · 31/10/2011 10:09

Oh and if you had a Mirena coil they should reduce the heaviness/ frequency of your periods but again... its an artificial hormone

Triggles · 31/10/2011 10:12

I've always thought we should have a switch that we can turn on when we're ready to have children, so the periods start, and then turn off when we're done, so we don't have them anymore. Bliss.

CheerMum · 31/10/2011 10:14

have you looked into the depo-provera injection? it is an injection in your bum every 11 weeks and for most women it stops all monthly stuff completely. i have been on it for years now and it is brilliant, no mood swings, no back ache, no period. might be worth considering

KatAndKit · 31/10/2011 10:16

Cerazette pill. Very rare, very light periods for me on that. suitable for people who can't take combination pill.

Mirena coil, most people have no periods on it.

agedknees · 31/10/2011 10:17

Endometrial ablation?? This involves scrapping out the endometrium which means you have no/light periods.

Go and see your GP. This is the 21st century. You don't have to put up with this.

HeatSeekingMelons · 31/10/2011 10:26

Snap OP!
Just getting over the most painful one ever. I'm 46 and still as regular as clockwork, they are just more painful now. I wish they could just stop ( but without the menopause kicking in [hgrin] ).

Atwaroverscrabble · 31/10/2011 11:32

thanks for the advice guys.. will look into a couple of them...

re: Mooncup - have one but a few months ago ended up with a very painful UTI and so not really willing to go back there yet - I can't afford any time off ill (writing up PhD) and I have been told there is a big chance of getting one again... [hsad]

love the idea of the switch triggles !

Another fan of Mirena coil here. I had increasingly heavy periods too and this has worked beautifully.

smokinaces · 31/10/2011 11:52

yup to Mirena. I had periods so heavy I could overfill a mooncup in an hour, and almost pass out. The Mirena has stopped that. Love it.

Naoko · 31/10/2011 12:23

Cerazette pill has been amazing for me. I haven't had a period in 5 years and they will have to prise my prescription from my cold dead hands, I'm never going back to the hell of periods if I can help it.

Notnapping · 31/10/2011 12:26

Now you might not like this suggestion.... But

I suffered with nightmare periods since the age of 11 and have been breastfeeding ds 2 for 7 months (plus got a coil 3 months ago ) nothing it's great

hanahsaunt · 31/10/2011 12:29

Mirena here too - no periods since having it in; can't bear them.

Rogers1 · 31/10/2011 12:30

I am on alternative medicine as I suffer with dysfunctional uterine bleeding (constant period....lasted 12 months after my DS was born 16 months ago). I use agnus cactus. it's made a massive impact to me...no pill or synthetic hormones would control it!

VivaLeBeaver · 31/10/2011 12:30

I had an ablation done six months ago for heavy periods and can totally recommend it. Yes it's done under a ga and is keyhole surgery but recovery period was minimal.

I only get a period alternate months now and it's so light I barely need a tampon.

witchyhills · 31/10/2011 12:43

Yanbu
Hate them
Tried a mooncup, it's awful
Unfortunately still trying to conceive, so kinda necessary.
But as I have been monitoring every little twinge, I have realised that for the best part of 2 weeks I can feel some kind of related pain and hormones are all over the place.

Rikalaily · 31/10/2011 12:53

I'm on my second depo jab and haven't had one single bit of spotting since the first one, let alone a period! I usually have heavy long drawn out periods so was put on Cerazette, the first time I went on cerazette it was bliss, light 2 day periods, had dd3 and then went back on it... hell. I was bleeding almost constantly so after a year I tried the depo. I thought I would be one of the women who has loads of spotting for the first few months but haven't seen AF for dust apart from a bit of period pain around the time I would be due on anyway.

Atwaroverscrabble · 31/10/2011 13:11

its weird isn't it how these pills and coils affect woman so differently though! Surely someone can come up with a universal 'stop-cock' for periods!

Atwaroverscrabble · 31/10/2011 13:12

oh and I breast fed exclusively for 6 months and then carried on until dd was 18 months and my period came back exactly one month after birth....[hangry]
