To hate the UK for allowing fireworks to be sold in shops?

MummyOfHnS · 30/10/2011 22:06

Sitting in my house right now and all I can hear are fireworks being set off all around me. Scares the living daylights out of me, and of course my kids are sleeping!!

I love going to organised events so it's not the actual fireworks that do it you see, it's the potentially very irresponsible hands they could be in!

Why are they even allowed to be sold??? AIBU!?

Yabu! I love fireworks.

GypsyMoth · 30/10/2011 22:08

The organised events in the uk you hate so much?Hmm

Andrewofgg · 30/10/2011 22:10

YANBU. You say the UK but I believe in NI they are not sold in shops so you should say GB. Fireworks should only be sold under strict controls to organised groups - with insurance cover. One of those changes which will seem obvious after it's done!

NearlyLeglessEuphemia · 30/10/2011 22:10

YANBU, it's insane.

But then again, much more harm is done by fags and booze. [hgrin]

IsSamNormansDad · 30/10/2011 22:12

YANBU. I bloody hate it. Ds (3.8) is terrified of them (no idea why, he hate hand driers too) and we have had to reassure him several times this month already that there arent any nearby yet. Hate the fuckers who set them off in the evening up til about midnight-1 am.
I think it should be organised displays only as much safer too. One of my childhood neighbours had a firework in his garden shoot into his buggy when he was in it watching & he has had to endure many many operations, skin grafts etc & he is quite badly disfigured because of it.

GuillotinedMaryLacey · 30/10/2011 22:16

Hate the UK? Slight overreaction there don't you think? Stick an iPod in your ears and you won't hear them. Job done.

TheFallenMadonna · 30/10/2011 22:17

Organised by whom?

Serenitysutton · 30/10/2011 22:17

Around 1000 people a year are Injured by fireworks, 5% of which are serious to warrent an overnight hospital stay (quick google) not as dangerous as people think, I suspect.

I didn't realise they weren't sold in NI. Shame you can't do crappy at home displays complete with baked potatoes and soup. Happy days.

startail · 30/10/2011 22:17

Because they are one of the very few remaining times the government treat responsible adults as responsible adults and let us have some FUN!
We can't eat fattening food, we can't drink, we have to drive at 50 on a perfectly straight road, we can't be trusted to do our own electrical work. We don't know how to bring up our own children.
We are preached at by left, right and centre and taxed to death.
Is it any wonder we like to light a few fireworks and pretend we are sending the whole miserable lot of them up in a cloud of stars. Then after a nice cup of coco we remember that however crap the present system we are jolly lucky to live in a liberal democracy take a deep breath and carry on.

ColdToast · 30/10/2011 22:21

There are hardly any organised events in my local area this year. I don't buy fireworks but can understand why others do.

GypsyMoth · 30/10/2011 22:27

Are you from the uk, op??

nailak · 30/10/2011 22:27

yabu, thats like saying we should ban alcohol as some people do stupid things when drinking!!

fireworks are only on sale for a short time, and in that time people want to experience and enjoy the novelty of fireworks at home.

last sunday me and my dcs, dss and her dcs and dp, bf, dp and dcs, dm and her dp, and db and his dp had a lovely time at my mums house, nice family get together, with entertainment!! kids loved it,

also many families use them to celebrate their own occassions, diwali/eid/ birthdays/ anniversaries, adds a bang to the proceedings!!

i dont know anyone that been injured by fireworks, but of course like many other things they are potentially dangerous.

IneedAbetterNickname · 30/10/2011 22:29

The organised events here are all a far walk from my house, cost far more than I want to spend, and are quite often a complete let down. I love watching the free non-professional displays from the warmth and comfort of my own house.

TeacupTempest · 30/10/2011 22:30

Yabu

SoupDragon · 30/10/2011 22:31

Move to a country where they can't be sold in the shops if you hate the
UK for selling them.

auntiepicklebottom2 · 30/10/2011 22:36

Yabu there are sensible people out there who can safely manage fireworks at home.

There can be a few idiots but why should that stop the ret of the uk enjoying fireworks.

NotnOtter · 30/10/2011 22:40

YANBU

i loathe them too! Midnght every second weekend - someone has a birthday and everyones kids get woken up

loathe them

pretty ones are nice but if i went hollering round the streets kicking cans at midnight on a saturday night - someone would slap an ASBO on me

flowery · 30/10/2011 22:42

YABU for hating the UK because it's possible to buy fireworks here. How over dramatic.

MummyOfHnS · 30/10/2011 22:43

Ok, for all who have clearly taken this Post as 'I hate the UK full stop' rather than what it is, I DO NOT HATE THE UK! What I hate ABOUT the UK (or GB as someone kindly corrected) is that they allow fireworks to be sold to unprofessionals for use in my next door neighbours back garden a few feet from my house, an others accordingly.

Yes I live in the UK and was born here (what has that got to do with it?)

Seriously, why do people spend the 10's of £'s it costs for the most terrible displays anyway when you can go to one for less which has cost £1000's and is far more safer and attractive? I just dont get it...

OP posts:
GypsyMoth · 30/10/2011 22:45

Professionals?? Such as......?

SoupDragon · 30/10/2011 22:47

Which countries do not allow them to be sold in shops? Move to one of those.

MummyOfHnS · 30/10/2011 22:49

Professionals that hold organised displays in several areas around the country Ilovetiffany..? You know, those with safety rules and regulations, medics and police officers on site, etc etc?

OP posts:
ColdToast · 30/10/2011 22:51

You don't seem to understand that these days it's getting harder and harder to find an organised display. Community groups don't want the potential problems with insurance. This year even the big display that everyone used to travel miles for has been cancelled.

You can't expect things to be banned just because you don't like them.

TheFallenMadonna · 30/10/2011 22:54

Well, my DH organises a display as a fundraiser for scouts. He isn't a professional firework letter offer. Is he safer there than in our garden? (We don't do fireworks in our garden - we pay to go to the scouts of course Grin).

Or is that not organised enough...

MummyOfHnS · 30/10/2011 22:57

Unhelpful soupdragon?

Coldtoast, perhaps in your area thats the case but there are 2 big organised displays going on around my immediate area, and a few others I know of within 20 mins away...and it's my neighbours and people from my town choosing to set them off here there and everywhere (particularly close to my house).

Apart from safety, and common courtesy regarding timings that people are setting them off (ie.now!) what about all the shivering like a wreck pets around the streets? Poor things will be petrified...
