I feel a bit stupid for not knowing.
The "Put your right hand on the Bible and swear..." bit would mean nothing to me.
So is there an option for people who have no allegiance with any holy text?
And if not, AIBU to think there ought to be.
(and if there is...well, sorry - prob not AIBU)

Minus

say is a case of affray and the evidence you was giving was that xy and z had fight against a and b. X was wear the blue cap, y the red cap and z the green cap. The evidence given is that x wearing the blue cap had hit a with a metal bar but by the time of arrest x y and z had swapped caps and now y was wearing the blue cap. And so our witness gives incorrect evidence based soley on the fact that he believes y to be x. He tells an untruth even though he believes it to be the truth.

I'm glad of that baby though I've had my religious belief questioned in court in an attempt to claim I didn't mean my oath.

Minus273 · 30/10/2011 22:07

Yes but surely that cannot be defined as a lie as it is not intentional as they are stating what the believe to be true although I agree it would be wrong.

cantspel · 30/10/2011 22:11

but the words of the oath are not that the evidence i give is to the best of my knowlegde the truth. You swear that it is the truth.

So it is easier just to affirm.

baby in many courts the Koran is wrapped in a green cloth so that it is not touched by a woman during her period or by a non-Muslim usher.

cantspel · 30/10/2011 22:18

Andrew you will find all courts wrap the koran in some sort of muslin as a very religious muslim wont swear on the koran if it has been touched by a non muslim.

If anyone is interested there is also a 'one size fits all' pagan oath that can be sworn, which is simply "I swear before all that I hold sacred . . . ."

As the 'sacred' is whatever you personally hold sacred, it fits anyone who has a spirituality or faith.

I did jury service last year and I used the affirmation. There was no problem with this, half the jurors did the same.
