To think that Glastonbury High street IS Diagon Alley?

Well, where else can you see people dressed as Witches all through the year and no-one bats an eyelid? You can buy a cauldron and wands whilst getting a pint of milk.
Even weirder this weekend I can guess [hgrin]

Is it worth a visit? I've never been.

Ripeberry · 30/10/2011 13:34

Lots of interesting shops. Even one selling all the ingredients for making spells, all in little bottles. One guy even sells wands but charges up to £600 for them, but some people do buy them [hshock]

Went there yesterday and it was great just people watching, the bookshops are almost all to do with New Age stuff and Wicca, with some self-help books.
Lots of flowing 'Vampire' costumes around as well.

One pub even quotes "This pub may contain nuts, welcome to Glastonbury" [hgrin]

£600 for a wooden stick! [hshock]

worzelswife · 30/10/2011 13:37

Totally agree. I drove there the other day and the first thing I saw was a witch coming down the street with a brook stick and a cloak and a hat. Having a totally normal conversation with her friend.

I don't think it's the best place to visit if you consider yourself a critical thinker. I wanted to throw science text books out the car at all the crystal/healing shop owners.

OldGreyWassailTest · 30/10/2011 13:40

Science text books do not have all the answers! The power of the mind is a wonderful thing, and if you think you are being helped by using crystals then it's working isn't it?

Ripeberry · 30/10/2011 13:41

The wands do have big crystals stuck to the end of them. Nothing like Harry Potter. Yesterday the street was heaving with Witches and even a few Wizards.
After a while you don't notice, but if you are not dressed up you are the strange one.
Never had the courage to stay there after dark!

Sounds fab.
I've never been either.

Ripeberry · 30/10/2011 13:45

I grew up in a family of sceptics, my Dad is a Doctor of Science and spends his time (how he's retired) trying to 'debunk' all this kind of stuff.
I used to get lectures off him about how wrong it was. But I still like to have a look and see, behind his back so to speak.

I'm quite impressed that they don't have a bible basher preaching the them in the High street. We used to have one in our town and she used to say we were all sinners for going shopping!

I want to go there!

aquashiv · 30/10/2011 13:46

Lovely place. Sounds great must take the children.

Ripeberry · 30/10/2011 13:50

I thought everyone knew about Glastonbury! I bet that is where JK Rowling got her ideas from. Only down the road from Street in Somerset.
Another good place to visit is just on the outskirts of Glastonbury, it's a reclamation yard, but it has LOTS of interesting stuff, even an old Russian tank and some ground to air missile launchers.
Giant statues and a whole load of interesting stuff from kitchen sinks to old red phone boxes.
Love visiting this area [hgrin]

piratecaaaaaaaaaghhht · 30/10/2011 16:25

i love going to Glastonbury. something weird and wonderful always happens there, or returning from there.

the greatest thing, was conceiving my dd there! after yrs of ttc.

ilovedjasondonovan · 30/10/2011 16:31

Ah, you're making me homesick. I used to live there, just underneath the Tor. Had to move because of husbands work, but we rented out our house; so can make a quick escape back if we ever had to.

I love the fact that you can walk around the town in your scraggiest clothes (and I mean scraggiest, with buttons missing and everything) and get called, I quote, "The prettiest girl I have ever seen". It was by one of the hippies there, and he wasn't drunk. Love the place. Hope to return one day. Used to walk up the Tor on the way to work.
